Origins 2024! Day 1 – Thursday On My Mind

Armchair Dragoons PAO, 21 June 2024

Day one wrapped up with a full Thursday of gaming and some thoughts from the Dragoons

Plenty of games on tables, and not all of them ours!

There was a first pass through the exhibit hall.

We even had a 15mm Battle of Quatre Bras, and NO CYRANO!

And this chucklehead at the Origins War College

Our War College program this year definitely had some work to be done, but we programmed over 20 hours of panels & talks to fill a 3rd room of the War College this year, and . . .  got stuck down at the end of the hall instead of contiguous to the other two War College rooms, which no doubt cost us a good chunk of walk-by/look-in traffic that might’ve sat down in the middle of our talks.

At the end of the day, we asked the Dragoons what they thought so far, and they chimed in:

Jim Werbaneth:

I’m having a great time.  I like meeting new designers and players, and as always I like doing the presentations.  I do hope that there will be more.

Tim Densham:

Great time. Huge improvement for the dragoons AO. Truly full spectrum historical gaming today!

Gregory Johnson:

It’s been great so far. Had a father and son play in our first game. The son had not played a wargame before and he had a great time. The second game was full of repeat players from last year.

Bruce Maxwell:

Fred and I made the presentation on the Ukraine war today.  About twenty people showed up.  They stayed for an hour and a half, with nobody leaving the room.  Audience feedback at the end was very positive.  Fred and I had a blast!

James Sterrett:

My son has brutally crushed me in two wargames today.  It’s awesome!  😊

Ian Brown:

My legs are sore and I’m losing my voice, which means it’s a successful convention so far! I’ve had players at the table for every session, and gotten to link up with other designers on a separate game system to which I’ve devoted a lot of energy. Time to crack open a Monster and whoop it on for day 3.

Rob Crandall:

It is busier than I expected and has a very positive vibe.  It feels like a return to normalcy at long last.

Chris Helm:

Great convention this year and it feels like we may finally be shaking off the rust from the covid years. Really great to see a lot of home grown games and minis in full swing. And in the vendor hall dice are back in a big way! Never a bad thing!!

and finally, the enigmatic Walter Kunkle:

The Shaman Ascends

See you Friday!

At the Origins Game Fair, so vast,
Wargaming enthusiasts amassed,
With armies in sight,
They prepared for the fight,
And victory was theirs at last.
