Been playing this alot since Tuna and W8 hooked me up with it in August. I really like it and I would be glad to jump in a game with any of you. Interested?
-
Sure... seems I need a LOT more practice, so why not.
-
Good man!
-
No other takers?
-
I just got it at Christmas time and played with it some. I'd be willing to get it a try as an MP game.
-
I've got about 300 hours in and several mp games under my belt. I certainly can't claim any mastery, but, I can answer a goodly amount of questions if you've got them. I'll ping Tuna and see if he wants in, too.
-
Some questions to all, to tailor the game to taste, what do you like about the game? Is there something that stands out that makes you want to play just one more turn? What don't you like? Do you have a starting preference? An area or tribe? Do you want to play majors or minors? Cooperate or cutthroat? Number of days between turns? I know everyone is busy, so, every three days? Four? More?
Some random observations:
* CDR is a bitch! It's the ratio between your Culture produced against your Decadence produced. Many buildings produce Culture, not all of which are the purple Science and Culture buildings. Look at each building carefully before choosing. Same goes for how much Decadence you purposely take on from buildings.
* It behooves you to concentrate early on Food and Military buildings. Food to grow your population and Military to expand. Make no mistake, this game is very much about expansion while balancing Decadence and taking Objectives and growing your economy along with your territory.
* Making Provinces should also be a priority. It reduces Decadence gain slightly and allows all the Regions in that Province to pool their resources together.
* You can move Citizens and Slaves in your Region window to boost Food, Infrastructure, Gold, or Culture.
* Check your Nation screen frequently. It shows your current Gov't, CDR, Ruler, Objectives, and a wealth of other info.
* Force composition along with Leader and Experienced troops, as well as the terrain you are attacking, go a long way towards winning. Check the Frontage of a terrain you are attacking first to know approximately which units will be in the front lines.
* Watch the battles when you have them. You'll get a better understanding of what wins that way.
* I find that once you make a Province, focusing on one or two Regions buildings is better than picking a building in each Region and waiting an inordinate amount of time for it to be built. Spreading the building around to all the Regions in turn will grow your empire quicker. Imo.
Anyways, it's late. I hope this helps. If you have any questions, I'd be glad to answer them if I can. We'll wait another day or two to see if anyone else joins. We'll start maybe Friday night or Saturday morning. I believe I have both of you as Steam friends. I'll make a group chat and ping you when the game is made.

I still have not played enough to have any preferences, so whatever the crowd wants.
I do think playing minor powers that are not near the majors give a bit better starting experience but that’s just me.
By majors I think I mean the 5 empires of Alexander. Rome actually starts pretty minor but is beset by many outsiders.
-
MD, thanks for the game play suggestions.
Like Barth, I don't have enough experience yet to have an opinion. I've only played as Britonae.
-
I've seen you, MD, online playing that a lot. Guess Warlock is off the radar, no? lol...
I don't know anything about Field of Glory but might check it out.

One less hour than FoG:E ;)
Seeing as noone has a preference for the general setup, let me ask you what your play style is. Aggressive? Slow play? OCD? If we assume a reasonable amount of comfort with a game, what are your usual patterns? And how do you change that to fit mp? Or do you?
I will expand at the rate the game and my resources allow. Constantly. If checked, I will stop and regroup until I can move forward again. If overwhelmed, I will quit. I can play teammate or solo. But if I am a teammate, I'd like to have a plan and defined goals. Above all, teammate or solo, I am glad to share what I know.
Two things we should determine first:
* Same side, teams, or every person for themselves?
* Should we start in the same general vicinity? Or just pick what sounds right to you?
I have played Belgae the most. I like Arverni the best, but I am playing Iberii with Tuna and they are pretty good, too. I like their troops. I have also played Aedui and Cheruscii. Aedui has weak armies and nowhere to expand. Cheruscii has good troops, especially the Rex Custodiae and + Forest fighters. But the local tribes are tough and numerous. Having a +Ruler helps almost any situation, so, feel free to explore if that's your thing. One game soon I am going to try Athens or Sparta. I was fascinated by Ancient Greece as a kid and it would feel like an accomplishment if I could win the game as either.
-
I’ve only played Rome, Britonae, and Brigantes and none to completion. I would say my style is overly aggressive as I usually run into empire size CDR problems.
I would say same side until only we are left, then free for all.
Start not too close as it can cause objective provinces to be owned by yer friends.
I guess my choices would be Britonae, Carthage, Iberii, Rome 😉.

Pretty sure you're asking everyone that question but I'll put in my half a cent - I like to turtle, to build up infrastructure and income so as to support a large, powerful army. Much the same in Civ V or other iterations. I tend to live and let live until someone/some AI pisses me off, then I go for the throat. :)
-
Yup. It was for anybody who wanted to answer. Turtling can work. Especially if you are surrounded and/or outnumbered. I say, do it to them before they do it to you. ;)

I've been pretty fortunate in my Iberii campaign. A long term ++ Ruler. Good battle results. I am stuck in the NE corner. I own the rest of the peninsula, but I left Celtiberi a couple of Regions and Emporia and Massalia have declared on me, too. My armies aren't powerful, but they are experienced. Anyways, what I am trying to say is, Iberii is a good choice.
Carthage intrigues me. Life in the southern Med. Controlling commerce and spreading across North Africa and the islands. Opposition to Rome. All good points in Carthage's favor.
Britonae holds no attraction for me. And I couldn't even tell you why. Just doesn't.
In games like these, I never play the big powers that everyone seems to love playing. So Rome, nor any of the Diadochi, appeals to me.
Same side until it's just us is good by me. In no particular order, I would like Arverni, Iberii, Carthage, and I think I would like to try Dalmatia.
-
I tend to like to start isolated, or weaker neighbors. I've only tried Britonae so far, but one of the German hordes would also be fun. Unite the British Isles, or become the master of Northern Europe and the Baltic.
-
Cheruscii has good troops. And the neighborhood is full of Germanic tribes with Marcomanni, Boihoiemi, Rhaeti, Belgae from SE to West. There is a region with a Wonder in it directly(?) next to your capitol. The Province you form with your Capitol Region is good sized and relatively prosperous. If you go that route, be advised not to wait too long on collecting up as many Rebel Regions as you can while they are weak. Once they get strong, they can be very difficult.
As an aside, I am not married to any one game. What I mean is, with the dearth of in game experience, we can restart any game at any time. The more experience you get, theoretically, will make the next game better. I haven't finished one in a win. Not even close. But, I have restarted quite a few. ;)

I'm in.. OJD, Goth is a good choice for you then, You start weak, but you are Germanic and you have isolation, so you can 'grow' a lil before being pestered by neighbors.
-
Word to warning, if you choose a Tier III, you do stand the chance of having Civil Wars whenever a leader dies, so it is important to get to tier II as quick as possible!.. Horde's = Tier III, Chiefdom's equal Tier II.

Every time I play a game with a human Gothones, it always ends with, "My country is in Civil War. I can't do this anymore." ;) My opinion, Gothones is too isolated. You should at least have a close neighbor or two. Gives you more chance of gaining Progress Tokens from taking Objectives. Plus, the constant battles will bring your army's experience up faster.
-
My first 'single' player game as Gothones, I totally ignored objectives, I just built CDR the hard way. I came in second in the finish. Was in first with 15 turns left, but Parthia overtook me, they were generating a ton of cash and that earned them a higher Legacy rating than I. But it was a good game for me, and a good learning game.
I am in my first Gothone Civil war in my current game with MD, I think I'll be okay, but we'll see. Again, if you can reach 'tier II' quick enough, there is no Civil War.
I think those countries to the West of me are a lot harder, because all your neighbors are attacking quickly. Cherusci, Marconi, Rhaeti. In our Alpine War game, it's not an issue, because your neighbors are human allies.
Averni is a good beginner region, because your starting Army is very strong!.. Belgae is a Chiefdom, I have had successful Single and MP rounds with them.
British Isles can be successful beginning. But if you're on Great Britain, that can be tricky start because of close proximity to potential Enemies., So Ally with them and chose the right time to go to War. Hibernia is weak at start, but does have water around it to give a lil isolation.
Important note in the very beginning, don't attack rebel plains if you don't have a lot of units for 'frontage'. Also create a couple warrior units before you start your first attack, as sometimes when it says possibly 3 units, it's actually 5! That's where Averni is great for the beginning, cause your initial Army is strong enough to attack immediately.
-
Barth, the game is up. I PMd you the password.
-
Done! :bigthumb:
-
When in Rome!
-
Barth, MD, OJD and I are on Steam, if you want to bang out a few turns before Football starts!
-
Be right there :D
-
New game is up Barth.. password pooch
-
Got it. Hide the password or some random may join.
-
I don't think it matters, we're all in now
-
Looking forward to hearing about this!
Pretty sure that once I get a new, reliable system, FOG will be a first day purchase.
Good luck to all and don't screw the pooch.
-
Are they still working on the big diplomacy update?
-
Are they still working on the big diplomacy update?
Yes, but you can play it now in Beta state. They just released a second beta version a couple of days ago.
-
@besliarius it works okay on my laptop, how bad is your existing system resource wise? I like finding games I can play on my laptop and FOG:E and FOG II work for me. Of course desktop is a lil faster.
-
The issue is my laptop is really getting old and having problems with the battery. I know that a new one is due, but family issues are keeping me from looking into a replacement.
Thanks.

The first game was a wash. Fourteen turns in, I had to ask for a restart. My play style is aggressive and my results were decidedly against me. ;) The game, by its very nature, really requires a Province to have any chance in the early game. After you get one, you can turtle and defend. Until then, it's tough to administer a group of single Regions. Your neighbors can be a bit...aggressive.
The roster for Round 2 is Barthheart as Rome
Tuna as Britonae
OJsDad as Cheruscii
MetalDog as Arverni
For the 300 B.C. geographically challenged, Cheruscii is in the middle of modern Germany. Arverni is the eastern middle of France.

Ahem... yer up MD!

Ahem... yer up MD!
He's building Pumpkin patches!!! :D

You'll be glad come Halloween! Or, when a giant shows up at your castle.
-
How's PBEM been so far for you guys with this game? If you are still interested in playing when the time comes I'd love to join in.
-
Getting my butt handed to me. Trying to play as German tribe and keep having civil wars when leader dies.
Next time I'm playing as Aetheopia.
-
BTW, I'm willing to start an another, in addition to the one we already have going, if we want to get Griffin involved.
-
Sure. :bigthumb:
-
What's another PBEM among friends.
-
I created a game called BarthMDTunaGriffOJ.
pw pooch
-
If anyone else wants to join in, speak up and I can reset it for more players.
-
pooch, really? Have we played Civ mp?
-
Which Civ.
-
IV Beyond the Sword?
As an aside, I took Carthage in the new Game.
-
Haven't played in years. Reinstalling now. Old school, from disk.
-
I've taken the Iberii. ???
-

They shut down the Gamespy mp site years ago. The only way to play mp is Steam. I asked if we had played together because you used pooch as your password. My Civ IV mp buddy had a dog named pooch and we always use that as our mp password. I thought maybe we had played together and you liked and remembered it. I can't imagine it's a coincidence.
@Barth: Is that not who you wanted?
-
It is who I wanted, just never played them yet so don’t know what I’m in for....

Nope, we never played. I used pooch because I thought that's what we used before.
-
I suspect that to be Tuna or Barth's influence then. I know they have played Civ with me.
@Barth: I had a great game going as Iberii. They have a fantastic Provincial unit. Then I ran into a a bad stretch of abysmal rulers and Carthage so I bailed on that game. But you are very well positioned to take part in anything in North Africa, Europe or GB.
-
Sounds good. I like to try and unify Spain in various different eras and games. Makes for a good focused goal.
-
Sweet! I havent played much of this game yet so trying Macedonia.
-
A note on Macedonia, I believe that they are required to attack every turn if able. It's a condition of playing Macedonia. I could be wrong so you might want to start a solo game to see.
-

You and me have a small problem. As Carthage, I own two ow your home Province's Regions and a third is one of my Objectives. If the Regions were marginal, I would happily give them up to you. But, one of them contains a Gold Mine and I don't want to give it up. On top of it, I'd like to take my Objective Region, too. That leaves you with the rest of Spain minus those three Regions. How do you feel about that?
-
How about you keep your original 2 and I get the rest? Pretty sure that extra one is an objective for us both.
-
You can now big up objectives with trades.. Not sure if the AI assign's new ones in that case.
-
How about you keep your original 2 and I get the rest? Pretty sure that extra one is an objective for us both.
I was hoping you would see it that way. I think I have to officially renounce that Objective for it to stop being one of mine. I believe it is something I can trade to you.

Griff, MD, Turns are waiting on you guys.
Deadlines are 3/14 at 7pm
-
Just Griff now. Waiting on MD in the 'other' game. :bigthumb:
-
MD, you have turns up that are going to expire today starting at 2.
-
I am sorry fellas. I have some RL stuff going on and I don't have much desire to continue my part in the PBEMs right now. I know that makes it more difficult on the rest of you and I apologize.

Think nothing of it man. Real Life is always first and foremost.
Take care of yourself and your family.
:)

As Barth said, RL comes first.

Thanks fellas.
