Not exactly a tank, but didn't want to start a new thread just for anti-air weapons

They should bring the Linebacker back. It was pretty dumb to get rid of it (along with a lot of other SHORAD).

Still, a Stryker armed with a five-kilowatt laser successfully destroyed twenty-one out of twenty-three drones in an exercise in May 2017, so laser-armed Strykers and JLTVs are a distinct possibility.

I always liked the ADATS system. Too bad we (Canada) got rid of it - but it's days were numbered.

They should've just parked it all in the ARNG so you had it available if you wanted it.  There's several ADA BDE's out there in the ARNG where they could go

I remember first reading about ADATS back in '86 in an issue of MilTech when I lived in Germany.

This is what happens when you let Marines write for the Army Times

https://www.armytimes.com/news/your-army/2018/10/30/reactivated-unit-gives-82nd-airborne-an-armored-component-that-packs-a-marine-corps-style-punch/

More than three decades after getting out of the armor business, soldiers with the 82nd Airborne Division have reactivated a company that will add Marine Corps armored vehicles to its formation.

Last week, the All American Division reactivated Alpha Company, 4th Battalion, 68th Armored Regiment at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

The unit had been deactivated in 1984 after having served as the United States' only “airborne tank battalion,” according to the Fayetteville Observer.

Uh...  3-73 AR BN was active in the 82nd until 1997, and equipped with Sheridans.

Wasn't it mainly the 'Shellelagh' weapons system that let it down rather that the vehicle itself?

I think it was both actually - too lightly armored and the funky missile.

Missile system never worked as advertised, but to accommodate the missile, you needed to mount a 152mm main gun, which was a bit large for the size of the chassis

Tank had to be lighter to airdrop, which meant lighter armor.  But too many planners (esp. the 82nd light-infantry-hooah-airborne-ranger-uber-alles brain trust) saw "turret + big gun + treads" and somehow came up with "just as good as any other tank" and ended up trying to use it in ways it shouldn't've been...

Yep. Mis-use was a big problem. Treating a light tank as an MBT never works out well.
