I loved that - for the knowledge but also just to see Russian aircraft. I think they're beautiful.

I doubt you'd fit in JD - you're far too big!

I know what you mean though, but I bet the ball gunners position was much worse.

Once again, Mark Felton does not disappoint.

(Note the bit about air-to-air refueling- not new but IIRC, never done with such large aircraft.)

Not sure if this has been posted before, but I did not see it. I've always been fascinated by the story of the Lady Be Good, a B-24 bomber that was lost over the North African desert due to some tragic miscalculations. They ended up bailing out over the North African desert; one died when his parachute did not open but that would not be discovered for years. The others met up and thought they were only 100 miles from their base on the coast, but they were actually 440 miles. Slowly but surely, they could go no further, and all perished in the desert.

This video does a fantastic job of telling the story:

One comment and one question:

Yes, the Pacific Ocean is big.

Why is this a job for the Marines? Isn't it more in the Air Force (...) or Navy line of business?

Good question.  The Marines justified their aviation requirements because they needed to provide close air support to the grunts on the ground, not doing deep strike missions.

Otherwise that article didn't say much, except that they will need a lot of aerial refueling.  The article cites an exercise last month where they flew from Miramar to Washington State.  That doesn't sound very remarkable.

After a couple of key battles in WW2 when the Navy decided to go carrier-hunting instead of providing CAS to the Marines ashore, the USMC vowed that they would always control their own CAS.

Because nobody gets scared when they hear the Air Force or Navy is coming.
