Maybe it's the 'Murican in me, but I'd be thinking of either having a security guard watching over all that stuff, or at least a member or two with Cricket bats. That's a lot of valuable stuff.

I'm wholly in agreement with you. >:(
It's heartening to see the support these guys are getting, but as the club secretary pointed out, money doesn't replace the hundreds (if not thousands) of hours put into these models & layouts over the years. I really feel for them.

It is indeed. Although its a rather strange choice for a new build since only 6 of the 2-8-2 class were originally built. They were intended to handle heavy express trains
on the route between Edinburgh and Aberdeen. Eventually, they were rebuilt as 4-6-2 Pacifics

I'd like to take a long train trip some day. I'd ridden to Edinburgh for a day a few years back but not sure that counts.

That's only about 30 miles. The most scenic route, and one they run a lot of steam hauled charter trains on, is the Settle & Carlisle route.

I skimmed through that video, will have to watch it later. That does look like impressive landscape. I thought between Glasgow and Edinburgh was damned pretty to be honest, but would love to have taken the train into north Scotland. Maybe next time.

Yes, they do run a lot of steam hauled specials up to the north of Scotland. I'd love to do that but it is quite expensive.

The wife and I rode the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad in Bryson City, N.C. last June. It was great and the scenery was fantastic. Especially with a nice Bourbon & Sprite to sip along the way. :bigthumb:

A4 Pacific loco 'Mallard' - holder of the world speed record for steam locomotives (126 mph). Designed by Sir Nigel Gresley.

They (Class A4) were built as streamliners and with very fancy carriages to match - including a cinema coach. The big rivalry was between the LNER for the East Coast route - London to Edinbrough, and the LMS for the West Coast, London to Glasgow. There are about 4 of the class preserved in running order.
Sir William Stanier, chief designer for the LMS also built some very powerful streamline Pacifics, the Dutchess Class, which, for a time held the speed record of 117mph

We have an amazing number of preserved steam loco's in the uK, and a surprising number of preservation railways to run them. Also, like Tornado and mallard, and many others, a lot of loco's that are licenced to run on charter trains on the main system - its big business these days.
This is one of the biggest and most popular - The Severn Valley Railway.

No problem - I've been a fan ever since I was a kid. have you looked at Train Simulator?
The main one I use, and have done since the first version was released in the 1990's. is Trainz by Auran. Its very much a 'build and operate a virtual model railway' program.

I confess I look at those all the time, but have never gotten down off the fence regarding them. They look like fun, but I suspect that if I were to start playing them, I would merely end up pining away for the real thing (which I don't have space for in my current place of residence).

Train Sim is really for if you just wan't to drive pre-made scenario's and enjoy the routes, but Trainz is hardcore if you want to design, build and run a railway. The amount of freeware that is available is staggering, and you get access to it all. there is also a Steam version available, although I always get mine as a digital download from Auran - I do not wan't to be reliant on Steam for it.
At a guess, I would say that I have spent more time on Trainz than all my other PC games in total.

Evening Star. Class 9F 2-10-0 heavy goods loco. This was the last stream loco built by British Railways - now preserved in running order.

I have a Lionel 'Sound of Steam' train set that I've had since I was about 3. I remember my grandfather would set it up every Christmas. I seriously doubt it works any longer but I can't quite motivate myself to sell it despite it being probably 40+ years since it's run around its tracks.

It was about 1992 or maybe a bit later. Its one of the many preserved steam loco's that is certified to run charter trains. there are currently around 400 such loco's running in the UK with a lot more in museums. There are quite a few preservation societies that have their own railways, such as the Severn valley Railway, and in some cases run regular revenue earning services. Much work is done by enthusiasts and money raised from donations.
We also have a completely new loco, Tornado, built in recent years with two more loco's from different classes under construction.
We do love our steam railways ;-)

Probably easy to fix since there's not likely to be much in the way of ICs or other fiddly bits involved. Use a multimeter and work your way back from the mains plug. Even if the power supply crapped out you can probably replace it with a smaller and more efficient one.

Back when our local mall hosted an annual model railroad exhibition, I remember some of the larger exhibits included military trains like that. It wasn't until I was older that I understood they weren't that uncommon, but I always found them fascinating.

Hoi as 'moi' JUST now 'found' this! The 'Model Kit' version that my Father completed were of a much larger 'Scale', and the 'Paper Model Kit' that 'moi' obtained decades later is around the same overall 'dimensions' while also having a "Track Base" as its "displayed mount" sort.
