Title: Nebulous Space Command
Post by: Undercovergeek on December 20, 2021, 07:38:35 AM
It may be a disservice to say this could be a gap filler to Homeworld 3 -

Take command of your hand-tailored fleet of space warships and use realistic radar, electronic warfare, advanced movement controls in 3D space, and precision targeting to outmaneuver and outwit your opponents in a simulation-heavy tactical space game like no other.

Great art style, and awesome new ideas

This is right up my street. Unless I'm mistaken early access only begins in Feb 2022 and will last for two years?  :-\

It’s out - it’s getting great reviews and it’s 15 pounds

Goddamn this hobby - I’ve just bought warno, and two other games and will get this, all whilst staring at DW2 knowing I won’t have the time or attention span to play any of them 😂

Exactly mate, and that's why I won't be buying this yet. As tempting as it is, a two year early access period coupled with all the lovely other games I have makes resistance pretty easy.

Do report on your own experience though!

I was very excited by the prospect of this one.  Got it last night and was disappointed to find that there is no ability to rebind the key commands.   Refunded.

It wouldn’t be high on my personal list of priorities but if that’s your thing I can see how it would be annoying

Closer to a necessity rather than a priority unfortunately.  Some digits on the left hand decided upon early retirement and refuse to work anymore.  I use the working ones to use the mouse and the right hand to push keys.  I can reach over with the right hand to do the WASD stuff but can't spend more than an hour or so twisted up like that before discomfort from the position outweighs any enjoyment derived from gameplay.

I purchased this on Friday afternoon and after a couple of hours in the tutorials, I find this game extremely challenging.

Silent Disapproval Robot is 100% correct, not being able to change key bindings is disappointing and I remind myself this game is in Early Access. I read on the Steam forums this is something on the to-do list for the game. Time will tell.

The UX decisions are also a bit perplexing. Plotting maneuver and missile salvos seems way more complicated than necessary. The reason provided by the dev is: hey, 3D space is complicated, trust the decisions I've made. I'm hoping once I begin to get comfortable with the interface as well as getting comfortable with the 3D aspect of the game, everything will start to gel. I also haven't played a skirmish game yet. I'm still familiarizing myself with the controls and the system in the tutorials.  ;D

Anyone else tried this yet?

Yeah, on some other forum I've seen a few people admit defeat too. They can't wrap their heads around the complex systems and three dimensions.

Thus, my resolve is weakening too. I really don't want to buy another early access though, especially one that's only just started.

I won't tell if you don't tell.  ;)

Seriously, if I could do this over, I would wait to see how this shakes out. If anything, wait a year and get it on sale.

If I have to take a hit on early access to achieve that, SO MOTE IT BE!

Okay, I completed the tutorial. I think at this point I would be drummed out of the academy and shipped off the Space Infantry. One of the selling points for me was the multiplayer and there's no way I'm ready for that. I need a lot more practice with the navigation tool and the missile plotting device. A couple year's worth of practice will probably suffice. I get very easily disoriented in the 3D view and I often send missiles in completely the wrong direction!

My friends convinced me not to refund and we've been playing it a bit.  The 3D plotting tool needs a kit of work.  It's very difficult to accurately plot way points on it.  Camera controls need to be a lot better.  I think it'd help if they used the centre of the map as a zero reference point put x,y,z coordinates beside each way point as you're plotting.

I wouldn't worry too much about plotting indirect missile tracks in a multi-player fight.  You'll be dead long before you get them off.  Railguns and direct fire missile swarms combined with jammer seem to rule the  attlespace when we play.

I think if we want to invite Dr. Perla to join us again, we'd better say it was Mr. Pellegrino's game.

Key rebinds in latest patch
Title: Re: Nebulous Space Command
Post by: ojsdad on February 19, 2022, 05:48:20 PM
Downloading a 703 MB patch right now.

Here are the patch notes;

Quote
Many of your have been requesting the ability to rebind keys, and it was unfortunately one of the things that did not make the cut before EA release last Friday. You can now rebind keyboard controls, or just view them, via the settings menu under the new Controls tab.

Keyboard shortcuts have two primary contexts: widget open and widget closed. The same key can be used for multiple actions, as long as their context is different. Some keys, like the movement keys for the camera, cannot overlap with anything else.

Full patch notes below:

Changes/Features:
- Added key rebinding, accessible via the settings menu.
- Track projections on the sphere widget will now turn yellow when the tracks are inside the seeker cone representation.
- Rotated locked plane normal for sphere widget. Pressing the H key will toggle a vertical locking plane for the current azimuth.
- Default WCON status at start of the game is now FREE. If you don't want your ships to automatically return fire, set it back to TIGHT.
- Double-clicking on a lobby will now attempt to join it.
- Added a faint background to in-game chat messages.
- Weapons firing on a target that is out of range will now indicate "Out of Range" in their status tooltip instead of "Bearing To Target".
- Narration in Tutorial 6 will now pause until each waypoint is placed while arranging the first waypoint strike.

Bug Fixes:
- Fixed glitchy rendering of some widget lines.
- Fixed KIL and PRI buttons not being greyed out when not opened on a track.
- Fixed some sound effects not having the audio mixers correctly applied to them.
- Disabled threaded nameplate texture compression, they are now done on the main thread. The game will stutter a bit while generating nameplates, but should resolve some crashes.
- Camera will no longer end up inside ships when focusing from very small objects such as missiles.
- Fixed Steam rich presence showing "%map_name%" when in the tutorial missions.

He had 3v3 single player - it wasn’t rushed he just really seemed to take his time and enjoy the experience

It's interesting and I had fun with it for a while but it gets repetitive very quickly.  It needs a lot of work to flesh it out.

Just finished the tutorials - Steam says I have 88 minutes for reference.

I'm pretty impressed with what I've seen so far. Looks like it's going to be good for some proper beard-stroking, thrilling engagements. Of course, I fully expect my first proper game to be an unmitigated disaster but I'm excited to try!

Exactly my thoughts - envision hiding behind asteroid and popping up with a scout to see enemy - miisikes launched from behind asteroid - major defeat without enemy even seeing me

Reality - missile ships fly into asteroid and scout ship is facing wrong way and can’t see enemy fleet

Unfortunately, I think the dev is listening to the KPS, twitch crowd on the discord server.  The introduction of the "disengagement" ring on the map means much of the map space is useless and it turns the battlespace into a PUBG style affair.  Stray outside the ring and the offending ship retreats from the battle.  I'd like them to make the use of the ring optional when setting up a server.
Title: Re: Nebulous Space Command
Post by: Huw the Poo on July 03, 2022, 01:20:13 PM
I dunno, I can see the battlespace being effectively infinite a good way to troll a multiplayer game too. I don't disagree with your idea though.
Title: Re: Nebulous Space Command
Post by: Silent Disapproval Robot on July 03, 2022, 01:29:08 PM
I think the dev added in the disengagement ring to overcome the primacy of railgun cruisers and battleships.  They were just sending out suicide frigates to pinpoint enemy ships and then deleting them with railgun rounds from the edge of the map.  I get the need to overcome that but I would rather he addressed it with something such as better jamming, slower railgun round travel time, the ability for ships to jink more with lateral thrusters, or defensive weapons like sandcasters/shotgun missiles that could intercept railrun rounds at high relativistic speeds and defeat/deflect the rounds rather than artificially limiting the battlespace.  Oh well.  I hear fighters will be added soonish.  Perhaps a few squadrons of space SPDs will give the battleships something to worry about.

Does the AI cheat?

I know I'm new and all that, but still.....on the first map with "starter fleets" the AI is detecting me way before I detect him every single time no matter what I do. I've tried so many combinations of deployment and initial orders, and only ever one ship with active emissions.

I'm sure I just need more experience but I'd like to know what I'm doing wrong.

Like a weird pc game whore I woke up this morning and thought I’d give battlefleet gothic 2 a bash because I really wanted to play big ass capital ships against each other - it didn’t go well - the game has departed my hard drive and yet here is nebulous still waiting to be played - so I’ll try some trial games tonight
