https://www.stripes.com/branches/army/2021-08-12/two-star-general-commander-new-artillery-unit-germany-2530791.html

They're bringing back the old 56th Field Artillery Command, which used to be the Pershing missile command over in Germany in the 80s.
For a while there, my dad was the G5 (back with the '5' was the civ-mil relations guy and not the plans guy) back in Schwäbisch-Gmünd

They're parking the new HQ at Mainz-Kastel, near the overall HQ in Wiesbaden.  Still not 100% sure what, if any, moves this'll mean for the other non-divisional arty units over in Europe right now.

They'll have to change the unit patch, tho, b/c the old one had a Pershing missile on it, and we de-comm'ed those 25 years ago.

I'll be curious to see what other assets (if any) we place in central/eastern Europe over the next several years.

they're reflagging the US Army units in Alaska to unify them under a single div HQ, as the 11th Airborne Division

https://www.stripes.com/theaters/us/2022-05-05/us-army-alaska-11th-airborne-division-arctic-strategy-5910999.html

For a while, those brigades were the 6th Inf Div, but that changed around '94 or so when they split the brigades to answer to 2 different brigade HQs.

There was always an airborne battalion, but now it looks like they're going to reflag the entire command.  What's unknown is if they're going to train the entire division in airborne ops and get them all jump-qualified

I don't expect them to do that.

First, it means giving up a Stryker BCT.

Second, the Army has been cutting airborne slots through the years.

Finally--conventional airborne forces are obsolete and a waste of resources. :groovy:
