Did someone say, Bacon Sandwiches? Seriously, I know I heard someone say it. I have a Bacon Detector right next to my computer and it was flashing like hell.  :o  UCG City looks like a beautiful place to visit. I'll make sure my Fire Insurance is paid-up before I come.  :notworthy:

The grand vista - 3500 occupants and growing

The agriculture zone - wheat produce has been doubled by adding more farms - to supply the malt factories in anticipation of starting the beer industry

ive put some industry behind victorian looking mill walls - it also condenses the space between producers allowing greater use of trade unions and their specialists

The dark satanic mills have also been established this is my fledgling steel industry

Tough work been a piggy on the island - you turn left youre sausage, you turn right you get turned into soap

The seat of learning - my first school ticking all the boxes to move onto artisan level inhabitants - but not yet

One of my other islands - this one benefits from rich minerals allowing a fertile area to grow hops - the missing component of the beer industry

It's the first Orbital Ring I've built myself.  My homeworld was the obvious choice, especially since it's only a few jumps away from a hostile power.

To be honest, at the moment I'm underwhelmed by them:  Orbital Rings just don't appear to be worth the cost in alloys and influence, versus the benefit you receive**.  They either should be cheaper to build/upgrade, or provide stronger bonuses to your planet.

In contrast, building Hyper-Relays (the other "lesser" mega-structure introduced in the Overlord DLC) have been a far better investment in my experience.  They're maybe not as sexy, but damn if they aren't effective.  Constructing a chain of those along my main hyper-lane routes has turned them into virtual freeways in space -- it's fairly impressive how much they cut down on travel time.

**(I reserve the right to change my mind later on if and as events warrant it.)

The nobs have moved in

Theyre up in the hills looking down on the plebs - it was nearly looking down on the pig farms so i moved them further out

and then i find..........

street view

The cornfields

The potato farms

The docks

The pub

im so charmed by street view i could spend hours walking the streets that are built marvelling at the detail - its a proper world with people haggling in the market, drinking in the pub and sweeping out their homes before going to bed

Wow!  I agree that's very cool.  :D

It reminds me -- in a very small way -- of Fallen Enchantress: Legendary Heroes, where you can zoom in on your towns and watch your people going about their business.  Or in the original Rome: Total War, where you could "walk" down the streets of your settlements on the campaign map.  (I still hate that CA removed that feature in later titles.)

This is on a whole other level, though:  As you said, it's an entire world, with people actually interacting with each other and living their lives.  Love it!

HMS Endeavour sets off to find the New World

We find 3 islands - this one will be for sugar, and eventually rum

This one that ive started to develop will be for cocoa and eventually chocolate

And this one is for coffee and gooooooollllllllddddddddd

and then you realise theres a whole other map system over here, a completely new area to develop and then mention of an arctic expedition which i imagine leads to another polar map - game is huge!!

The docks by night

The swanky new theatre in the artisan section of town

Starting to populate the new islands - this is Chocolate Town, subsequently renamed Bourneville - it will be where most of the chocolate comes from when its unlocked

El Bufero is where the sugar cane is grown for the rum distilleries, now named Barcadi Island

I decided to spend a bit of time personalising the dock area, walling off the town and adding some flavour items

Bacardi starting to grow

So much so we can upgrade the inhabitants and unlock coffee and the gold mines

And theyre having a street party in Bourneville!

And now some fancy shots of the islands

Posh part of town overlooking the home island from behind the theatre

The Great Khan has arisen, and has been making alarming headway.  He caught me off-guard by making a play for the strategically-critical Terminal Egress system and its master L-Gate, far sooner than I was anticipating.

Fortunately, I was not completely unprepared:  I had earlier constructed a standard Gateway immediately adjacent to the L-Gate, which allowed both of my primary fleets to quickly counterattack and engage the enemy.  The Khanate would be more careful in the future.
