Title: Reference Books
Post by: Bison on July 03, 2019, 06:54:23 PM
What are the best books with color images besides osprey. I don’t mind Osprey books just wondering what else is out there. Looking to decide on some color schemes for my ancients.

Helion has some stuff with nice color plates, but they don't have anything covering Ancients yet.

You might find some interesting stuff here: https://peterspaperboys.com/

Does Chartwell have anything?

Peter Connally had some good illustrations in Greece and Rome at War.  He was overall a good writer and conveyed things pretty clearly.  He did his own illustrations and they were pretty nice.

Depending on how esoteric you want to get, try looking up anything by Antonio J. Munoz. He authored quite a few books on lesser-known Axis formations. Not sure if there's color images - can't recall, but I think there are. Regardless, they're excellent titles.

I have the three George.F.Nafziger OOB books on the German armed forces of WW2. Packed full of info but not one single illustration, but if its solid data you want, these are definitely the tops. I think you may still be able to pick copies up on amazon or e-bay.

All those lesser-knows Axis formations of the Ancient world?  :hehe:

Hahahaha smart-ass. :)

I mean, such as Luftwaffe Field Divisions. His treatise on that (Goering's Grenadiers) was a great resource in helping me write the article I did on Field Divisions for World at War Magazine a few years back. I learned a lot about those poor guys that way.

i also have Forgotten Legions, which covers lesser-known SS combat units. Well...lesser-known by laymen I imagine, but not nerds like us me.

Again, not arguing the books you're describing might be very interesting, but Bison was specifically looking for illustrated guides for ancients, as he was looking for inspiration for painting schemes.

It's probably why he filed his "Reference Books" thread in the pre-gunpowder area  :hehe:

George Nafziger is still going.  He normally is at the HMGS cons with a table of all the pubs he still has copies of.  He is very approachable and likes to talk about history.  I expect he will be at Historicon in Lancaster this month.

TIL - WW2 is now far enough in the past to be lumped in with Rome.

Bad news for you, Bob.

Yeah...sort of looking to paint late republic romans and a Carthage army. I also have an Iberian and Macedonian army of the same era.

If you do you'll be hoplessly outclassed. The time difference between Republican Rome and the Napoleonic wars is enough that the rest of us will be using hovertanks, infantry battlesuits, nukes, and 'mechs.

It’s all good man. I’d like to paint some bolt action minis eventually so your references may yet come in handy.

I think the Praetorian Guard only used Pz III's.

I'd LOVE to put together and learn how to paint some model tanks and such. I've had a plastic model kit of the Akagi in my Amazon cart for more than a year. But I would have no place to put them - much like my board games in my new house.

Look at 15mm like Flames of War. Small and if you magnetize the bases you can store in cake pans if you are building armies other wise a tank or five really doesn’t take up much space at all. Think FFG X-wing size models.

Thanks, Bison. Glad a helpful post appears on occasion.
