Fascinating!  I've come across a couple vague mentions of them before, but didn't really know what they were or how they worked.

 :2funny:

I had a set of loaded d6s back in the day that I brought to RPG games. I never used them, just had them for comedic effect. They were WAY too obvious.

I want a d20 that replaces the 3 and the 6 with an extra 17/18

Everyone would notice an extra 20 or a missing 1. But who looks for a 3 or an extra 17?

I have bought loads of dice tha6t have round edges because I believed they rolled better.

I'm going to have to revamp my dice stock.

No need to change your dice (at least if you are using Chessex, though I suspect other brands are similar):

d20 Dice Randomness Test: Chessex vs GameScience (https://www.awesomedice.com/blogs/news/d20-dice-randomness-test-chessex-vs-gamescience)
So Which Dice Are Better?
It’s worth stressing that based on our tests you would need a lot of dice rolls before you saw a meaningful difference in any of these gaming dice — roll a thousand times and maybe you’ll see 5 or 10 less of a given number than you’d expect (or more). So for gaming purposes both dice will work just fine. Seriously.

Now whatever it is that Vassal is doing? That needs to be investigated!  ;D

Okay! Here's a picture of a d20 that was included with some other miscellaneous stuff in a used copy of the Star Trek RPG that I bought from ebay. Any idea what game this d20 goes with (if any)?
What's with the arcs over the numbers?

Here's some of my dice

The fishbowl I keep referring to on the game table
(http://armchairdragoons.com/acdgraphics/dice/B-Dice-Fisbowl1.jpg)

the contents of the fishbowl - a mix of oversized Black Oak dice, cool-looking d6s & d20s, a couple of polyhedral sets, the roman numeral d12s, and more
(http://armchairdragoons.com/acdgraphics/dice/B-Dice-Fishbowl.jpg)

the advent calendar from Black Oak, with the dice in their sets
(http://armchairdragoons.com/acdgraphics/dice/B-Dice-BlackOakCalendar.jpg)

the new set of dice I got this summer from Amazon.  Nice dice cup, and comes in reusable box styled to look like mimic/treasure chest
(http://armchairdragoons.com/acdgraphics/dice/B-Dice-NewSets.jpg)

the dice that were in the work bag for years, with a few figs (Brandis & Raf)

The steel die I talked about as the streak-buster
(http://armchairdragoons.com/acdgraphics/dice/B-Dice-SteelDie.jpg)

the other pouch I kept in my game bag with some of my rulebooks/character sheets; more figs, fewer dice (I suspect I had more dice that were moved to other places)

the itty-bitty dice, except for the mini polyhedral set that I can't find right now
(http://armchairdragoons.com/acdgraphics/dice/B-Dice-Minis.jpg)

some crystal-looking d6s that I was using for the Civ Dice game I'd been playtesting off-and-on for a few years now (pawns are for the workers in that game)

The big box of random dice on my RPG shelf, dumped into the dice tray
(http://armchairdragoons.com/acdgraphics/dice/B-Dice-BigBox.jpg)

some of the singles from that box, including some story dice, a d30, some character-custom d6s from Black Oak, and several sizes of d6s
(http://armchairdragoons.com/acdgraphics/dice/B-Dice-BigBoxSingles.jpg)

my faction-specific Heroscape dice w/ their color-coded bags.  I have 2 more factions still in their boxes w/ their standard bearers
(http://armchairdragoons.com/acdgraphics/dice/B-Dice-HeroScape.jpg)

The Ninja Dice game I talked about on the podcast
(http://armchairdragoons.com/acdgraphics/dice/B-Dice-NinjaDice.jpg)

The Throwing Stones game, where each die is a different set of skills that you'd mix & match our of your character's 'set' of dice to resolve things
(http://armchairdragoons.com/acdgraphics/dice/B-Dice-ThrowingStones.jpg)

what's not here?
There's at least a dozen or more polyhedral sets in the different starter boxes I have for different D&D games.
The custom dice in games like Runebound and 1754: Conquest and Mage Knight
All the stray d6s that are piled up everywhere, whether from A&A Minis sets, or lost copies of Risk & Yatzee
I had a whole bunch (like, 40 or 50) of black d6s with skulls on the 6, that I got from a friend who was unloading a lot his dice, literally by the bag, to friends when he was moving back to the US from Europe in the 80s
I have a half dozen of the gold-colored carved-skull d6s from the Pirateology folks
There's a bunch of d6s and d10s in different boxes with playtest components in them (like the Warfighter box and the Orange Crush box)

I'm sure I'm forgetting something....

And the mentioned famous Lou Zocchi video:

Cheery dude.

But...

There are tests (http://www-users.math.umn.edu/~garrett/students/reu/pRNGs.pdf) for random number generators which are easy to apply to dice (modulo the whole rolling 10,000 times thing).  (Most of that PDF file seems to be a direct paraphrase of Don Knuth's sections from Seminumerical Algorithms. It's not up to date, but it's as good a source as I'm likely to get.)

Since I got my new, spiffy dice tower, I got curious and am going through Knuth's tests for some dice I found lying around. I'll post some results when I get off my buttocks (or rather, get onto them) and and produce some. And I've ordered some Gamescience dice to test, too.

Here's some old AD&D dice:

(https://cf.geekdo-images.com/cjxEOEXJ69WhQ8RPakM7bQ__imagepage/img/Y7GB5mM1dumnJa_aYAd28m_8cgk=/fit-in/900x600/filters:no_upscale():strip_icc()/pic4904753.jpg)

No idea where these came from:

(https://cf.geekdo-images.com/pLORNXzP_jKt2kUr8XZXgQ__imagepage/img/bb8rpmgBNgUmxCceRXF6MXgd54E=/fit-in/900x600/filters:no_upscale():strip_icc()/pic4904745.jpg)

All of 'em that were in my dice bag when I found it in storage. There ought to be more; for one thing I thought I had a d100 golf ball.

Car Talk!  :D

I lost most of my polyhedral dice over the years, but I started gathering them again, outside of the games I've gotten. I added a bunch of Bolt Action/Battlefront Minis type dice with American, British, German, Soviet, and Japanese iconography on them for WW2 games requiring d6s. Thinking of getting the French set too, but don't have many games (if any, none I can think of) with Frenchies in them. Might get the Afrika Korps d6 set. Really would like an Italian set but haven't really looked too far for those yet.

I did pick up a set of polyhedral dice at Christmas - metal ones. They're verra nice but I don't do RPGs any more so...it's just nice to have a full set of those in case I don't have any handy.

A shame I lost my original D&D polyhedral dice set - red ones, which came with a yellow crayon, so I could fill in the number engravings on the dice myself. I got that set in middle school and used it so much, the d20's edges were smoothed to the point it pretty much just rolled like a ball on a table.  ;D

I use 5 mm dice as alternative to numerical counters in some games--such as attrition counters in the GBOH series--and as altitude markers in the Red Storm (and related) games.

Ok, so I listened to the episode. (Gasp! They jumped the queue?!)

No love for 3d6? Added together? (Yeah, I started with TFT and played a lot of Champions/Hero system.)

With 1 dice, you get a uniform probability. With 2, you get sort of a degenerate, triangular distribution. With 3, you get a fully formed normal distribution. 10 or less is 50%, 14 or less is about 90%, 3 and 18 are really unlikely, and modifiers are interesting: +1 goes from 26% to nearly 40% or 50% to 62%, or 90% to 95%---it goes from really useful to not that great depending on where you start.

Bullet shaped die were a good idea - they were just badly implemented. Metal ones were required

(I'm talking about DVG - just in case there's others out there)

I really like the idea of having the different nationality dice to pull out for each side of a wargame.

Me too. I've bought several of these Tanks sets - Soviet (hammer and sickle in the 6 place), U.S. (American white star), England (roundel), Japanese (Rising Sun icon), and German (Wehrmacht crosses). These help flesh things out though I still want some d6s for the Italians. I might get their French set too, as well as the US Marine set.

The Soviet and German d6s are awesome with Pavlov's House. I'd been wanting these for The Dark Sands and some of my other games in this area, though those are sparse. The English set will go well with my new (to me) copy of Raid on St. Nazaire. Soooo many applications for these.

I'd love to also score some North and South Civil War d6s, but can't find anything here in the States (gee, go figure).

They are all Battle School dice.  He designs the dice with certain themes, or just different nationalities.  They are very nice, although like most dice they tend to roll boxcars when what I really needed was snake eyes.   >:D

I've collected a few Tanks and Bolt Action d6 dice to use in games...I just added some British Airborne, Israeli, and Canadian. I have some Italian d6s too but I just realized I'm not sure where they're at...probably in my Lion of Judah box. A few polyhedral sets too even though I don't do any RPGs. Regardless of that, I've collected a few of those new hardback redos of old DnD adventure modules and just a couple of days ago went ahead and ordered the Player's Handbook for 5e. No plans on playing but I am interested in seeing the system again after all these years. I haven't really played since 2e.

Bluetooth enable 6-sided dice.

An interesting concept with potential use for online play of wargames. $120 sticker price (for 5 dice) put's them in a similar price range to the BattleDice. Unlike the BattleDice, balance IS likely to be an issue.

I never posted by dice from Black Oak this year, but it's not a bunch.

An oversize d20 w/ a diamond for the 20, a matched pink/purple cat set of d6/d20 for Bayonette, a V for Vendetta inspired knife die, and a glow-in-the-dark cthulhu-looking die.  There's also a 7-piece standard RPG set (4/6/8/10/00/12/20), a d2 masquerading as a drink coaster, and 2 dice bags, one of which was the Kickstarter prototype for the campaign that closed on Sunday at Origins.

So not near as much as normal, but that was true of most of my Origins loot this year as I was trying to keep things a bit more frugal.

The dice tray is one of the ones we got from Blue Panther as a part of the booth decor
