How does that "heroic combat" marker work?

The game has 3 combat phases, javelins, normal combat and then heroic combat which simulates warbands fighting their peers, the warfare in the era was marked by named heroes and retinues of sworn men and women so the design relies heavily on that.

The counter serves the purpose of marking what specific "mosh pit" is a Heroic Combat ( is not influenced by normal combat ).
