A new 4x game from Epic that a bunch of y'all are playing....
Chat away!
-
Ooh!
-
Yeah, this one's going to be worth keeping an eye on. :bigthumb:
-
I’m stuck here - I’ve watched a let’s play and am pretty meh but the world seems hyper positive and everyone’s loving the game
-
Is it actually available yet?
-
I've got it and have played it for about 6 hours now.
If you don't like Civ style game you probably won't like this.
If you do, then you'll want to check it out. it's got some very cool ideas and subtle changes to the regular stuff.
For example, Units don't have a fixed set of action points. Your civilization has a pool of Orders, that you can increase through various buildings/techs etc., that can be used with all your units... until the unit gets fatigued. So it's possible to have more things to do than you have Orders for. Example, Scouts can do up to 5 actions before they become fatigued. Moving takes an order to move a certain distance, shorter through rough terrain. Want to move the scout farther, go ahead and spend more Orders. But then maybe you'll run out of orders to have a worker build something or your armies move or fight. You can still move fatigued units it just costs an ever increasing amount of orders and sometimes resources.
This is a really well worked out mechanic.
Another thing is the CKII-like dynasty creation and personal relationships in the game with your family, other families of your empire and the leaders of other Empires.
There are minor civs that occupy city sites and you can trade and make war with them. There are also barbarian camps you can make deals with and hire their units.
Other big change is city sites. No more building cities where you want. you need to scout out city sites and build there. A city site usually has 3 or 4 hexes associated with it and you can settle on any of them, the others then become part of your city. Where and how you city initial border form is based on which of the hexes in a city site you settle on. Seems restrictive at first but quickly becomes an interesting mechanic.
More as I play some more....
-
Is it actually available yet?
Yes, it's available in Early Access but only through the Epic Store.
-
Thanks Vance - that explains why I can't find it on Steam :idiot2:
-
For some reason I just can't bring myself to join the Epic store. :-\
-
Nope, same here - Steam has enough temptations as it is.
-
I was a holdout but I've made a couple of Epic purchases over the last year and downloaded a few free games. Epic is nowhere as polished a site as Steam and I hardly care enough to learn how to navigate their site beyond downloading my few purchases, but.....eh. I don't feel scarred for life by my experiences there.
-
Besides ‘who needs another library’ syndrome I don’t understand the negativity epic get
If a franchise I loved moved there - I don’t give a shit - I’m moving to epic
-
Yeah, that's the main reason. It's the same thing that's happening with TV/movies. Everything is splintering to pieces and I have to subscribe to a zillion different things to the shows I want. More usernames/passwords to remember, more payments to track, etc. We all screamed for à la carte and we're getting hit in the head with it pretty good.
-
I've had my eye on this one for quite some time now (back when it was still called "Ten Crowns"), and am excited for it. The game introduces some pretty neat ideas (and/or combines older ones in interesting ways), and of course I'm a sucker for both 4x and historical strategy titles. The fact that Old World is Soren Johnson's brainchild doesn't hurt either.
That being said, I'm waiting until it's available on Steam. Nothing against Epic, really -- indeed, without them, it wouldn't have been possible for Soren and his team to continue working on the game -- but I don't feel like dealing with yet another storefront. In addition, that way the game should be nice & polished by the time I pick it up. :)
-
Besides ‘who needs another library’ syndrome I don’t understand the negativity epic get
How long have you got? Epic are nothing but bad for the marketplace thanks to their practices. Now, I get that a lot of people simply don't give a shit about the "politics" of the PC gaming market, and that's fine. But I do care, and I hate Epic. It's not "who needs another library" either - I have zero problem with GoG, Origin, Uplay, etc (I even have accounts on all three). I do have a problem with Epic.
-
That’s cool Huw - I’m unaware of their practices but get that some nefarious shenanigans can generate animosity
-
OK, I think we have made our points, but lets not let things get out of hand, please. C:-)
-
Just saying, I don't think anything was even close to getting out of hand.
-
Fair enough ;)
-
Not sure if I missed this here but it seems to be the perfect next level 4x game
Old World
Orders
Orders are a resource used to issue commands across your nation. Instead of moving every unit every turn, as is traditional in 4X games, each unit can be moved as many times as desired, until the player runs out of Orders. There are many other ways to spend this resource: Combat, Construction, Events, Diplomacy, and so on.
Legitimacy
Each ruler must prove that they are worthy of the throne. As you accomplish Ambitions, finish Wonders, and gain renown (as “the Wise” or “the Avenger” or “the Peacemaker”), your Legitimacy increases, granting additional Orders each year and improving your standing with the people.
Succession
Every turn in Old World represents a year, and the rulers are mortals who won’t last forever. They will need to get married and produce an heir to continue their line. When a ruler dies, the heir who takes the throne chooses a new Ambition to make a new name for him/herself.
Events
Old World has a powerful and deep dynamic event system that generates a procedural story for your nation based on your decisions, your accomplishments, and your characters. The game has over 1,000 unique events, many of which are inspired by historical events from the period. These events give characters Memories, Traits, and Relationships, which can then trigger later events, so be careful what you choose.
Ambitions
Your dynasty achieves victory by fulfilling 10 Ambitions, each one more difficult than the last. These Ambitions are dynamically generated from the Events of your game and the desires of your Characters. No two games will ever play out the same way, and the wise ruler will know when to change direction.
Politics
Each nation has four noble families who can be granted stewardship of your cities, with each one providing unique and powerful bonuses. You’ll want to balance how to distribute cities among your families carefully as those with too many will begin to think they deserve the throne while those with too few will grow envious of their rivals. Pleased families will keep their citizenry under control while angry ones will incite revolts.
Territories
Cities form cohesive blocks of territory, with an urban center and rural hinterlands. Each improvement occupies a single tile, including Wonders and urban buildings, such as Shrines, Amphitheaters, and Garrisons. This territory grows based on where the player constructs improvements and trains specialists on the map.
Resources
Resources in Old World, such as Food, Wood, Stone, and Iron, are stockpiled as they are produced, to be spent on units, improvements, Wonders, and so on. Borrowing some algorithms from Offworld Trading Company, a dynamic marketplace allows players to buy and sell the resources at any time, with the prices fluctuating based on supply-and-demand.
Technology
The technology tree borrows mechanics from card-building games to add variety and create interesting decisions. Each technology available to research is added to the player’s deck, and when it is time to choose the next technology to research, the player draws four cards, chooses one, and then discards the others, which will not reappear until the deck is reshuffled. Thus, choosing between two desirable technologies is a difficult decision as the player knows they will not see the card they just passed over for many more turns.

That one's been baking for a while now. Is it done yet?
-
Merging with existing thread
-
I was playing it and thought it was coming along well. That's been about a year now. I'll go back to it when it's ready for release.
-
I suspect I'll eventually end up getting Old World, once it's available on Steam. It looks pretty good.
-
Merging with existing thread
I’ve commented on it twice and didn’t know it was here
-
;D
-
I have it and while it's interesting I found it limited as it only takes place during "ancient" times. The combat model is interesting and a new take for the genre.
-
Maybe there will be DLC that moves it into the future.
-
Like WWII? 8)

Old World is officially being released on Epic July 1st!
https://twitter.com/mohawkgames/status/1399727435243995148
-
No words about Steam or GOG it seems....
-
This one disappeared from my radar. I wonder what kind of state it is in. It's one of those Epic Store only releases so I guess I'll have to wait. :-\
-
I have it on Epic. I haven’t played it in a long time, mostly because it’s on Epic and I’m almost never on there and the games limited scope of only ancient world left me a bit cold.
I should go back and see what’s become of the game.
-
I played it a few times and overall enjoyed the game. Each update broke my old saves though so I put it away until it was finished. There was a lot I enjoyed about Old World so I will take it for a spin again once it's officially done in July.
-
The game just doesn't run very well on my gaming computer. It's a good computer but not very new (2015 i think). So i never completed a game either.
-
No words about Steam or GOG it seems....
Unfortunately true. I suspect it will remain an Epic exclusive for a while yet.

Epic pretty much saved Clever Mojo from going under when their initial publishing partner went bust, so I suspect it's staying on Epic alone.
-
Maybe for a year, at most. It will be on Steam at some point.
-
Yeah, it sounds like they have plans to spread to other platforms eventually.

I wonder if a Steam release is coming soon. (http://www.aarcentral.com/emoti/please.gif)
-
Explorminate's review of the game (https://explorminate.co/old-world-review/) is already up. (A few of the staffers have been playing it for a while now.)
An impressive-looking review, all the more so for the fact that it was done by someone other than Rob, who's been an admitted fanboy of the game from the beginning. I can recall only four other games scoring that well in Explorminate's reviews: Stellaris, Endless Legend, Shadow Empire, and Distant Worlds: Universe -- all fairly elite company. They clearly like Old World a lot.
I wonder if a Steam release is coming soon. (http://www.aarcentral.com/emoti/please.gif)
You and me, both. The answer we continue to get from the devs is a vague "yes", but there's been absolutely no word on when that might actually happen. :(
-
I went through a slog of a game with Civ VI on 'marathon' settings and definitely hit the 'meh' stage with the game. I decided I wanted something new and was initially going to go with Humankind. Some posts here and word of mouth from some friends convinced me to go with Old World instead.
It's intriguing so far. I'm on my 3rd game but first real attempt at playing to completion as the first two were more learning sessions than anything. I'm still in the dark in terms of what improvements to build in and around cities and which family types are best. I'm finding the AI to be very challenging! In my first two games, I played as Babylon and Assyria and had a hell of a time with barbarians. Thus game, I went with Rome and the damned game only put one barbarian tribe anywhere near me.
Oh well, I'm tied for 1st in scoring and I thought I was progressing well with 7 cities and what appeared to be a decent military. Egypt tried to extort a bunch of concessions from me and I told them to get stuffed so they declared war. We're nowhere near each other on the map so I sent out several of my best units to form a defensive line in favourable terrain. I had 3 spearmen, 4 axemen, 2 slingers, and even a war elephant gifted to me from Carthage. A sea of Eygptian spearmen and slingers showed up and chewed right through my line. I lost all my units and only managed to attrit their forces by about a third. Theres nothing between Rome and the Egyptian hordes now but fields of wheat. Looks like it's time for game 4!
-
Dang it, SDR. You're not making the wait for the Steam release any easier here... :P
-
Yeah, I'll pick this up once it hits Steam.
-
Dang it, SDR. You're not making the wait for the Steam release any easier here... :P
Don't worry, DW2 will be out next month.
-
Also...the music in this game is really, really good. I also like the fact that you have to research Drama before you get to listen to it.

We hope...!

Whoa, seriously?? I can't decide whether that's maddening or brilliant...

I think it's pretty cool. You can still go into the audio menu and play a single song if you like, but none of the music will auto play or go to the next track until you get the tech.
-
Okay, that's hilarious. I'm going to *have* to get Old World now, just for that. ;D
-
Watching some let’s plays later - don’t know anything about it

That is cool. I think Paradox does the samething in CK and EU with Christmas music.
-
You have to research Christmas and then you hear Christmas music?
-
Sorry, no, The Yuletide music only plays in November and December, if I remember correctly.
-
I was being silly again. So that is kind of cool. One of the previous versions of Civilization (3 I think) would spawn an Elvis unit on Elvis' birthday. 8)
-
Are you fibbing again?
-
I fib you not! It was in Civ 3, Regicide mode!
-
Holy crap :2funny:
-
Wow! That's pretty cool.
-
Only thing cooler would be to create a Velvet Elvis monument.
-
Hey Gus, have you read or better yet, listened to any of the Expedionary Force novels/audiobooks by Craig Alanson? One of the main characters is an AI called Skippy the Magnificent and he (it?) is obsessed with all things Elvis. His most prized possessions are a velvet Elvis painting and Elvis's original white leisure suit and cape combo.
-
^I am ashamed to say that I have not, and I feel even worse that I didn't write that myself :/

^Damn you, robot.
-
Whoot! Old World is finally coming to both Steam and GOG next spring! Dang, I can't wait. :D
Two interesting things to note:
1.) When it comes out on these two platforms, it appears the game will be released with an "expansion campaign".
2.) It appears Old World has acquired Hooded Horse as a publisher. (These are the same guys who are publishing Alliance of the Sacred Suns and the space RTS Falling Frontier, as well as Terra Invicta, which is their own in-house developed title.) I would say this is almost certainly good news for all parties involved.
-
Same trailer, but for GOG. I'll probably purchase my copy from them.
-
Even though i already have the game on Epic, i'll get it as soon as i comes out on GOG.
-
Cool. Then we could play MP.
-
Cool. Then we could play MP.
Sure....but man, i am so slow when playing MP....takes forever!
-
True. On the other hand, it *is* turn-based, so we can play at our own pace. (People who play Stellaris/CK3 on max speed settings are lunatics...) :P
-
Sign me up. I seem to excel at getting my ass handed to me by the AI. How much worse can squishy meatsacks be?
-
How much worse can squishy meatsacks be?
Literally, we probably *are* worse than the AI. I don't think Anguille or I will ever claim to be brilliant players. ;D
-
Alright. Monkey assassins at dawn good sir!
-
New patch added more music. And it's 10% off at Epic right now.
Also, it turns out I really, really suck at this game. Even on training wheels difficulty, I still manage to lose. I just don't understand it. I mean, I have the whole monkey assassin thing down pat. Surely there can't be more to the game?
-
^ No, absolutely not. ;D
Yeah, I saw that update with the new music. Very cool!
I also just read that Old World has now added a series of tutorial-style campaigns/scenarios for newbies, and that they're supposedly pretty decent. Given that the game seems to have a rather steep learning curve, this was a smart move by Mohawk.
Also, can 2022 get here already?? Between Distant Worlds 2, the Master of Magic remake, Galactic Civilizations IV, and this game's impending release on Steam, I feel like I'm going stir-crazy with the waiting...
-
Same trailer, but for GOG. I'll probably purchase my copy from them.
Honestly, I thought I was watching a trailer for Civilisation
-
The site appears to be down at the moment, but Soren has posted some extensive thoughts on game design, especially as how they affected development of Old World. It's a pretty interesting read.

PC Gamer names Old World the best strategy game of 2021:

I wish that would hurry up and get a Steam release.

I wish that would hurry up and get a Steam release.
You and me both, man. This is easily one of my most-anticipated games for next year, probably only behind DW2 and the MoM remake.
For what it's worth, Leyla from Mohawk Games did drop this comment in their Discord today:
We are not that far along from the Steam release, can’t say more
Fingers crossed!
-
:applause:
-
At last! The game is being released on Steam & GOG May 19!
https://steamcommunity.com/games/597180/announcements/detail/3182364231141495648
In addition, a new "Heroes of the Aegean" expansion will be available for free the first two weeks after Old World is released on those platforms (the expansion will also be free for two weeks on the Epic store). :)

:applause: :applause: :applause:

Is this any good? I mean, particularly good? I don't generally reward devs who take the Epic bribe but as I recall there was massive buzz over Old World.
-
Is this any good? I mean, particularly good? I don't generally reward devs who take the Epic bribe but as I recall there was massive buzz over Old World.
I haven't played in a while but it is good. The diplomacy between nations is different in a good way and you have rulers who die and pass on their empire to their heirs. You can influence this a bit through choices in events. Because of this, if you are on friendly terms with a foreign ruler and they die you could be faced with a new ruler who is a lot less friendly because of previous events in the game. Adds a nice dynamic to diplomacy. This is the largest difference from something like Civ.
It is just old world though, about 300 years (turns) around the rise of Rome era. I found that a bit restrictive as I like all of history but that's just me.
-
Hmm, OK. I'm interested enough to do a bit of research then, at least. Thanks mate.
-
To add to what Barthheart said, the AI is also supposed to be good (not surprising when the game is designed by Soren Johnson). In addition, his team has added a ton of content in the last year, such as 500 (or so?) new events, to name one example.
Is this any good? I mean, particularly good? I don't generally reward devs who take the Epic bribe but as I recall there was massive buzz over Old World.
FWIW, my understanding is that, had it not been for Epic's money, Old World might not even have gotten made. The game's previous publishers went belly-up, leaving Mohawk Games suddenly & desperately needing cash to finish development.
So at least in this instance, I can hardly fault Soren & co. for taking the money in exchange for being an Epic exclusive for a year. It was that, or nothing.
-
With ancient Greece in it, it's a day one purchase for me %uD83D%uDE0A
-
Yeah, I plan to grab this one at launch as well. :)
-
Some bad news for non-English speakers: While the game is being released on Steam next week, translations won't be finished until around the end of June...

-
Ooooh, I forgot this was coming out next week! Gimme...gimme...gimme... (https://www.aarcentral.com/emoti/new/impatient.gif)
-
Yeah, I'm still jazzed for this one, too. However, I'll be heading to Wisconsin next Thursday, so it's going to be closer to two weeks before I can spend any time with it. :waiting:
-
I'm late to this. Is Old World a spin on Crusader Kings.
-
I'm late to this. Is Old World a spin on Crusader Kings.
No it's basically Civ set in ancient Med. Only 300 years of time span. There is some leader play/control but nothing close to CK.
-
A pretty cool interview with Soren. I always enjoy listening to him talk about games and game design.

Ditto. My Visa is like, "What? Again???".
-
Well I just finished downloading the game on Steam. Now to head out for the weekend and not touch it until Monday! :'(
-
I'm waiting to see what y'all say about this before pulling the trigger.

It's fun, get it! ;)

::)
I guess I asked for that....
-
Well, for what it's worth I bought it on Epic when it came out and purchased it again on Steam yesterday because I really, really dislike Epic....but love Old World. So that's my 2 cents.
-
Back ye harlot temptress I just upgraded stellaris and am playing that!!
-
"Harlot temptress".....I need to make that one into a T-shirt 8) ;D ;D
-
Thought I'd chime in with my 2 cents and a bit more then just a couple of words recommending to get the game.
Short answer - I'm glad I held off buying Humankind and waited for Old World to hit Steam.
Long answer:
I'm really enjoying the depth this game has to offer. I highly recommend playing the tutorials before diving into a proper game. This game does indeed require some preparatory classes, aka the tutorials, in order to appreciate the main game. Much like attending university to become educated enough for an advanced career, this game requires some education in order to play this advanced game.
Not recommending this game if you are a casual civ player. I can see that Old World might not be appealing to a hard core civ'er either.
To derive joy out of this game you must divorce yourself from all things civ and have an open mind.
The scope of this game is limited to just the ancient and classical ages. Because of that however the game can offer focused features and gameplay mechanics that would not work in later ages. Old World is really impressing me for what it is but this game might not be for everyone and certainly not for a casual gamer.
-
I bought this when it released last week on The Steam and I have played 4 of the 5 extensive tutorials, and as a gaming strumpet harlot, I have to admit I am about to fall in love.
I like the combination of strategery and family dramah, and I also really like the tight focus of only about three centuries in the ancient world. Once I am done with the final tutorial (tonight), I am going to try my first actual campaign as Persia.
I was never a Civ fanatic, just a casual player, and always longed for a similarly designed game set in one era with minute detail, and it looks like I finally got it.
-
Thats guys thats helpful. I've always enjoyed the early parts of Civ games and wished I could take more time and detail in those ancient eras so this sounds like it might be a good fit.
-
Man, Old World is getting so much praise. Despite some critiques, overall, most folks seem to love it. PotatoMcWhiskey makes a serious plug for the game, despite not having even having been sponsored:
As for myself, playing the game will have to wait until Wednesday. I spent all of today running errands and getting caught back up with everything, and I work tomorrow. It's going to be a long 24 hours... :silly:

‘’Man I can be such a jerk sometimes and I feel bad but check out my slam on some of the folks over at the forbidden zone. Of course I was my cryptic self but I'm sure the dweebs that feel like they're such hot shit got it.
Edit: forgot to mention I posted something about the game "Old World" over there.’’’
You’re a duplicitous dick
-
^Oh dear.
For those playing through the tutorials, have you got to the final one (#5)?
Player is assigned to send their Greek scout to find Roman positions. My scout kept getting caught and I had to restart - rules of that specific tutorial.
Any advice?
-
^Oh dear.
Oh dear indeed - it was going to be cunt but I didn’t want bob to get any grief
-
^But you just typed it out right there.
-
C:-)
OK, lets not let this get out of hand, please chaps.
C:-)
-
^But you just typed it out right there.
Embrace the slam ::)
-
Well it’s not a slam against me, I don’t think. And it was a duplicitous, I agree.
Because of that I did warn W8 in a PM that guys here still visit over there, and vice versa, when I saw the post yesterday.
I’m not trying to defend or deflect - I just don’t think W8 realized that there are still people who visit both sides.
I have probably overstepped my bounds already. W8’s a big boy, he can defend himself if he wants to.
Anyway if anyone can help with my Old World scouting issue - please - advice is welcome!

It doesn’t matter which of us can see both sides of the interwebs - it’s what one is saying when you’re doing it
Posting some mysterious supposed hidden insult here and then going back over there and snickering about how clever you are makes you a dick whether you thought it could be seen or not
And I’m sorry I have no scouting advice Gus
-
I don’t disagree. Whether W8 comes back and defends himself or not, I dunno.
I just wanted it out there that I saw it, I addressed it (albeit privately) and said, diplomatically, ‘probably not the coolest thing you did today.’
-
There is nothing to defend. I'm guilty as charged.
Now that everything is finalized and out in the open, I feel better.
It is good to get things off your chest and talk it out with those you have disagreements with. Now that you all know how I feel I leave it up to you to decide if you like me or not.
Know this though, that I was deeply hurt and scarred to this day over the rift that happened. You all did what you had to do but there was a lot of destruction that was left. If you don't think people were hurt then the healing for both sites will never happen. I hope my incitement now that it has been discovered can lead to working things out and healing. We all used to be such a good family but now we're divorced.
I noticed that people who were my friends on STEAM dumped me and IT HURT!!!!!
Don't police this post. Instead try to engage in healing. Let's get back together so that this hatred can be put aside. Yes I admit, I'm butt hurt and did that childishly. Can you see why though? Can we come home together again and be friends as it was in the old days?
-
I don’t hate anyone! I was also hurt to just be dumped like so much digital refuse, but I’m feeling better now. That said I do not like that the community split either. Ultimately it’s up to BB or Bawb or someone here, but maybe a reconciliation thread is in order so as not to continue hijacking this Old World thread.
-
We of the Hittite tribe can never reconcile with you perfidious Persians. NEVER!!!!!
(unless you're willing to trade some wood for some stone?)
-
You can pry my stone from my cold dead Persian hands once I figure out how to use my scouts correctly in the final tutorial, knave!
-
It's war then. So be it.
Boy! Fetch me my fighting chariot!....no, no, no....that's the touring chariot. Get the one with the whirling blade thingies on the wheels....what do you mean it's in the shop?
This isn't over, Persian!
-
^See it can be like old times.
Stand and fight, Hittite!
From who else can you get rhyming historical threats and insults?
-
Is this RTS or Turn based?
-

I prefer the Hun version - the one with the horse at the back.......
-
Do you mean the horse’s arse?
OJ this is turn based.

Guys,
I've made the only public statements I'm going to make about why I left, and I'm not re-litigating it.
Others have their own option to say something about their own choices or not, as everyone made their own decisions, and they have the choice to express that their own way
If you guys want to hug it out in private, please feel free to do so.
If you guys want to hug it out in public, please feel free to do so.
If you guys want to fight it out in private, please feel free to do so.
If you guys want to fight it out in public, please feel free to do it somewhere else and leave it out of The Armchair Dragoons.
But whatever you do, open a different thread for it and let's get back to talking about Old World here, or I'm going to have to start splitting threads and moving posts around and that's a pain in the ass that I don't want to do any more work than I have to

Somehow this ended up starting to download in Steam tonight. I blame you guys. Only problem is having no time to play it until the weekend, but the slick "free" DLC marketing ploy may have worked to get the impulse buy.
-
I blame you guys.
seems to happen a lot around here! ;D
-
Heads-up for those who already owned the game on Epic:
https://mohawkgames.com/2022/05/24/epic-prior-may-19/
We noticed an issue where the DLC was not being gifted to people who had purchased Old World Prior to May 19. This has been fixed, anyone who has purchased the game prior to May 19th on the Epic Game Store should have the Heroes of the Aegean DLC at this point in time.
Additionally if you had already purchased the DLC in error your account has been automatically reimbursed. Thanks for your patience and understanding.

Muahahahaha
Wait, let me try that again...
MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
(Ah, much better. )

I was pretty much planning to get Old World no matter what, but yeah the "free" DLC definitely made my decision that much easier. ;)
-
Just about done with all the tutorials which are great - then will start my first actual game.
-
Just about done with all the tutorials which are great - then will start my first actual game.
How long do each of the tutorials take?
-
Each one took me about an hour - there are five. The in game help reads that the tutorials don't cover everything, but they're really detailed.
The last one kind of befuddled me because the one important unit, the scout, was key and could not be seen by the Roman enemy. And mine kept getting caught :/
-
The first two tutorials took me roughly 45 minutes each. The third and fourth ones definitely took about an hour. I'm still working on the fifth (and final?) tutorial atm and I've already got 50 minutes into it.
-
Incidentally, this is the final day of the 10%-off launch sale. Buyers can still get the Heroes of the Aegean DLC free for another week, but the game will be regular price after today.

I got through the first 2 tutorials yesterday, and will resume playing the 3rd one when I get home from work tonight. The "Orders" system is one of the big game-changers, obviously, and am now learning about how Characters work. It's clearly not as deep or complex as in Crusader Kings, but still interesting. Would love to see a Leader/Character system like this implemented in Stellaris and Distant Worlds 2.
I have to admit that one aspect of Old World I'm definitely *not* fond of so far is the (now almost ubiquitous) 1UPT. In all honesty, I suspect I'm never going to love it. But I think I might be able to enjoy the game in spite of it.
I also have to give a shout-out to the game's soundtrack. Just...wow. I have no words. In terms of beauty, length, and variety, I'm utterly blown away. I could almost love Old World for the music alone.
-
Now I'm wondering if I should have tried Offworld Trading Company. It being RTS kind of kept me away.
-
For buying Old World on Steam I got a coupon for a free copy of Off World Trading Company - not sure if the deal is still live.
-
Well, I actually own it. I just think I should have tried it. ;D
-
Now I'm wondering if I should have tried Offworld Trading Company. It being RTS kind of kept me away.
Base game is on sale right now on Steam, and even cheaper on Green Man Gaming.
-
Stop throwing your logic at me, bbmike!
-
Ten months after the last time doing so (shortly after the game's full release on Epic), Three Moves Ahead sits down with Leila & Soren again about Old World. It's a pretty nice chat.

Now I'm wondering if I should have tried Offworld Trading Company. It being RTS kind of kept me away.
I probably could've gotten over the RTS aspect, the problem is there are simply too many other games I want to play. Overall, it's a good problem to have, of course. :)
For buying Old World on Steam I got a coupon for a free copy of Off World Trading Company - not sure if the deal is still live.
I got a free copy of OWTC just for signing up for the Mohawk Games newsletter on their website (https://mohawkgames.com/). They seem to give away the game so much, that I honestly wonder if they've made any money on it at all. ???
-
the problem is there are simply too many other games I want to play. Overall, it's a good problem to have, of course. :)
I've been thinking about this a lot lately, and while I've said the same thing for years, nowadays I'm not so sure it is a good problem. Back in the day I'd get excited about four or five games a year, and when they came out I'd play them, finish them, get very good at them and all that. These days there's (at least) one game a week I want. I buy many of them. So not only do I not give any of them the time they deserve, but also I can't deny I'm wasting money really.
-
Yeah, too many to do justice to. I try and focus on one that I think I will really play a lot, such as Warlock, AoW III and so on. The problem then is that a load more new games come out in rapid succession, and makes me change my priorities :-(
-
I don't disagree with what either of you are saying. They're all valid points.
At the same time, if I were forced to choose, I'd rather have the problem of too many (good) games, than too few.
-
Its a bit of a double-edge sword, innit? :-)
-
if I were forced to choose, I'd rather have the problem of too many (good) games, than too few.
You're probably right about that mate.
-
Are we in a Gaming Golden Age? That would be great since everything else is sh*t.
-
Well, if dystopian fiction feels less fictional every day, then at least we gamers are well equipped to endure ::)
-
Too many games. Never.
-
;D
-
I finally beat the final tutorial earlier today. Total, it’s took me twelve hours to finish all five.
I am thinking of trying a civ I would never have played in any other game, maybe the Hittites or the Assyrians, before I go for broke with a longer campaign with the Persians.
Also looking forward to the Heroes of the Aegean campaign.
-
First 3 tutorials down and liking what I'm seeing so far. Definitely going to have get rid of some Civ habits while playing and take my time learning the ins and outs of the game.
-
Many great games (new and old) and not enougth time to play them....but yes, better to have too many good games than not enougth. But there are so many games i would like to spend more time on.... :-\
-
[Moving the discussion here, so as not to derail the IS:G thread.]
Yikes - is it bad or just deep and brain taxing - and n verge of purchase for old world
The latter. I think it's mostly that i currently lack the patience/energy to really give Old World the proper deep-dive it requires -- or perhaps it simply isn't my cup of tea; I'm honestly not sure yet. But either way, I don't think it's a bad game. I'm just not feeling up to it at the moment.
-
I’ll watch a few more let’s plays - my game time is so limited and therefore valuable to me that I’m really trying to limit my choices to the OMG that looks amazing type and I haven’t felt that with OW yet
-
Yeah, it's not the easiest game to get into. I can sense there's a good game there, but it definitely demands you invest your time in it in order to fully realize that discovery for yourself.
-
I am no jenius [tm] but I am enjoying Old World a lot - so many well done details and historical touches and customization of your civ. I’m even enjoying learning the game’s nuances, which I usually don’t have patience for. The manual is also very well done and the online community is excellent.
My prayer is that this more focused game model is carried over to other eras - I have been waiting forever for something like that. A series in this vein would be incredible.
-
Really old world
Not so old
And quite old?
-
Heh ‘Oldish’ World
-
Got you - like Bob?
-
Hahaha yes but younger 😎
-
So after doing some further digging around (articles, forum/Reddit discussions, etc.), I'm starting to realize that I've completely misunderstood & underestimated the importance of characters in Old World.
Rather than being the proverbial gravy accompanying an already flavorful meal, they are actually a fundamental part of the game's design. Any ruler (and/or their court) with halfway-decent stats will provide massive bonuses to research, civics, culture, etc. -- far more so than any individual city (and buildings), or even all your cities combined in some cases. As such, characters are absolutely critical to your empire's success (or failure). Old World does give you the option of playing without characters, but by most accounts, you'd be playing only half the game in that case.
I'm having fun playing IS:G at the moment, but I'm definitely going to swing back around to this one again, now that I have a (hopefully) better understanding of how integral characters are to the game. I still don't know if Old World will suck me in like it has for others, but at least now I have a somewhat better idea of how I should approach it.
-
The review on RPS says for the first few turns don’t try and win don’t try and get it - just play and work out why things do what
-
The review on RPS says for the first few turns don’t try and win don’t try and get it - just play and work out why things do what
Isn’t that the way with any game? ???
-
Oooooo errrr well not for me - when I press start game I’m in it to get to the end with a perfect empire and glorious spaceships or armies - muddling thru would drive me insane
-
I kind of agree with RPS in this case. My brain just can’t take all of the detail, so some winging it is necessary. There is just so much info in Old World...it’s incredible.
-
I used to approach games more like 'geek's hardcore style, but I've admittedly eased up a bit over the last decade or so.
The urge to play to win -- even on my very first go with a new game -- is definitely still there. However, I've also since learned to relax somewhat, and that it's okay to screw off while I enjoy playing around with a new game's features & mechanics. It seems to have made my gaming experience a more enjoyable one overall.
-
I've admitted lately that i just ain't any good at new games and am playing them on the easiest difficulty in order to learn them. I used to start on medium but was usually beaten up badly for a while before i understood what i was doing.
-
^That is usually my preferred method as well.
-
Totally depends on the game for me. If I'm playing some kind of story-heavy action game, like Bioshock for example, I'll play on easy because I want to (more or less) guarantee I'll see the whole story.
In a strategy game I'll play on easy to learn the game, but then assuming I get good enough, I'll ramp up the difficulty in subsequent playthroughs to maintain a challenge.
At the far end of the scale, simulations are what I'm best at, so it's always 100% realism for me. If the real world pilot/driver/etc doesn't have it, I don't have it either. :)
-
I have learned that the Old World AI at the 2nd or 3rd difficulty setting is smarter than me.
-
Old World gets its first update after release on Steam & GOG:

Finally finished the tutorials and liking what I'm seeing so far. The music really adds some great atmosphere!
Now I'm trying to decide what I should do for my first game. Should I go with one of the scenarios or just a full blown game?
-
I tried a random game and had many false starts just learning how to set one up...the menus are less than intuitive. Last night I finally got a good game going as Assyria vs. Babylon.
-
I tried a random game and had many false starts just learning how to set one up...the menus are less than intuitive. Last night I finally got a good game going as Assyria vs. Babylon.
Started a random game as the Hittites and was plugging along learning as I went and managing to somewhat understand what I was doing. But then my leader died and it hit the fan and now I'm not sure how but my original leader's 4th granddaughter is now Queen in waiting after "letting" her father be the regent till she comes of age. Oh and I turned down a marriage proposal from the Gauls and now they are loitering at my border with some unfriendly looking fellows.
There is alot going on in this game but I'm enjoying bumbling my way through.
-
I’m still enjoying it a lot. I am about a third of the way into my game as Assyria (against Babylon) and the Babylonians attempted to assassinate my Queen. I could have declared war on them but didn’t, but a few turns later they declared war on me. So now, it’s on…bring it, Babs.

Gauls loitering with intent....what could go wrong?
-
Everything?
-
Are there any particular settings, map type, etc. you guys recommend? Or avoid? (Other than playing on an easier difficulty -- I'm already planning on that. :P )
-
I only play on the real world huge map. It’s quite good. With everyone. :idiot2:
-
I’m playing on the middle size map of the Middle East right now as Assyria versus Babylon. Last night Babylon declared war on me along with the semi-civilized Thracians, Scythians and Numidians. I was able to make peace with Numidia through marriage and am still learning how to make peace otherwise with my ambassador…the war is not going well :/
Still love the game though and I am 100% convinced this will be a major time sink, like 100s or even 1000s of hours.
Not sure which difficulty setting I chose for this first game…I think it was the third level (The Good?) and that may have to be turned down for the next game.
Also looking forward to a game with more than one major civilization.
-
Restarted a new game as the Assyrians and am enjoy the events that are popping up. Still trying to figure out the whole 3 family thing in terms of keep people happy and doling out cities for them to run. Still alot of fun and enjoying the fact that I am getting a full game out of the ancient era!
-
^That's one of my top three reasons for loving this game...the entire game in one era. It was so long in arriving :/
-
Too true, Gus. I would like to see more 4x games set within specific historical periods like Old World, Imperiums, Oriental Empires, etc. The concept gets ignored far too much.
-
^Yes, YES! Take my money and all that. I can't wait to see what Mohawk will be doing with the Old World engine next. I game just like this set in the Renaissance would be godly.
-
I'd love for someone to put together a series of Civ style games that are stand alone, or can be linked, so you move your game from one era to another. That way you can continue to grow you empire, but each era game would be designed to before that era, and not just cramming everything into one box fits all.
-
^That would be really, really cool. :bigthumb:
-
I just signed up for their newsletter and got a free key to Off-World Trading Company. May have to look at some of us doing some MP.
-
^Yeah I did the same through Mohawk Games.
-
^That's one of my top three reasons for loving this game...the entire game in one era. It was so long in arriving :/
I can't tell you how many Civ games I've started and abandoned after being annoyed with having to advance to the next era.

The possibilities ....

I got a free key when I signed up for their newsletter as well. I haven't checked out the game yet, though I keep meaning to.

So apparently decisions have consequences.
Decided, as one does, it was a good idea to arrange for the Egyptian Pharaoh to go to the afterlife prematurely from you know "natural causes." It works, no one is the wiser, life goes one. Fast forward 10 years and suddenly a real unhappy fellow shows up in the throne room claiming we had something to do with the death of their former Pharaoh. "We don't know what you are talking about" we say. "I have proof" he says and now there is a huge Egyptian army marching my way......
-
Ha, that's awesome, TCT! This is the sort of thing I need to read about to help get me back into this game. :applause:
-
Ha are you prepared?
-
Update #92 is out! A bunch of balance tweaks and UI improvements, along with the usual bug-fixes.
https://mohawkgames.com/2022/06/16/old-world-update-92/
Ha are you prepared?
I never am, really. ;D
-
That is a lot of up-dates!
-
Ha are you prepared?
So yeah, about that. See what had happened was that previous administration had gutted the military budget to focus on infrastructure improvements and never really seemed worried about a strong military because hey we're nice guys. This strategy is currently being reevaluated.
-
^Well done. Re-evaluate quickly.
-
That is a lot of up-dates!
I have to keep reminding myself that Mohawk had been patching this game for a solid year before it released on Steam & GOG -- and it was closer to two years when you include their Early-Access phase.
-
Some of these games look great, but they're so damn expensive - hope they don't put 'em all in a sale at the same time :(
-
Oh, you know they will, Bob. That's how they show both their love *and* hate for us. ::)
-
Yep, bitter experience has proved that on more than one occasion. :(
-
I poked my head back into Old World for a bit last night and...man, it's just not grabbing me. I really don't know what it is -- the presentation, perhaps? -- but there's something about this game that causes me to keep bouncing off of it. :-\
(To compare/contrast, Imperiums: Greek Wars is no less complex, yet I've had an easier -- or at least more enjoyable -- time getting into that one.)
-
^I've seen a bunch of others say the same. Just not for everyone.
-
On sale right now on Steam for $31.99. That's 20% off.
-
And yes, I've purchased.
-
And yes, I've purchased.
-
And yes, I've purchased.
Enjoy, buddy. Hopefully you'll have better luck getting into than I did. :)
-
WAIT!!! You all didn't say anything about there being a play by server cloud option for multi player. Sweet!!
-
I didn’t know that either… startup a game!
-
Looks like up to 10 players. Who's in?
-
10 might be a bit much, the maps aren’t that large. I’d cap it at 6.
Oh, and in. We’ll get to see if their cross-platforming works as I have on Epic.
-

From what I'm seeing, do start a cross platform game you have to start it as a network game first, then you can convert it to a cloud game. Ping me when you have a few, and we'll test it

I still really like this game but...as with others...I am pretty er, unskilled at it. Playing as Persia now and both Carthage and Egypt are pummeling me :/
-
I've seen it repeatedly said that if you don't maintain rough military parity with other empires, the AI *will* take advantage and/or punish you for it. It also seems to happen somewhat often where the AI likes to ally with at least one other empire before going to war with someone -- which makes sense, when you think about it.
(So perhaps the lesson is find a "war buddy" of your own? Hmm.)
-
A career or college level course could be made from learning the nuances of Old World. Right now I would fail at both. I fared better as Assyria against Babylonia in my previous game. Now as Persia I am lagging far behind Carthage, Egypt and Greece. Persia is a power with serious military potential but you wouldn't know that from my playthrough :/ Even with my craptacular showing I still enjoy the game a lot. I hope my enjoyment can lead me to getting better.

I too am still in the, wow there is alot to figure out here, I'm terrible at this, but its alot of fun :)
-
I started a war with Egypt to attempt to reclaim at least one of the cities they took from me…it’s going less than well. In the final third of the game and then may take a break for a little bit. I’ve put about 50 hours into the game in the last six weeks.
-
I finally spent some quality time with this and it's really fun. Adding characters was an awesome idea. :bigthumb:
I'm looking forward to playing it again. Plus, it's the first time I've actually played a PC game in quite a while.
-
Despite sucking at it, I do enjoy it.
Reached turn 136 last night and Egypt totally destroyed me. Going to take that break from it for a bit.

A bigger patch than usual. Some of the highlighted features:
Four new Learn-By-Playing Scenarios
A set of standard games with curated maps. Learn by Playing allows new players to learn the game within a context that is close to the default experience and lets experienced/competitive players benchmark their play.
Dynasty System added for Greece:
For our players with the Heroes of the Aegean DLC they can now play as four additional starting Dynasties: Ptolemy, Leonidas, Pericles, Alexander allowing more distinctive starts for Greece with full family trees.
Improvements to Game Balance
Our community helps build a better Old World and we have made various adjustments to game-play balance based on your feedback. This includes adjustments to family bonuses, archetype abilities, unit and law balance, unit consumption and the ability to trade unimproved tiles between owned cities.
I'm particularly interested/happy to see the "Learn-By-Playing Scenarios" added. I have a feeling that may work better than the tutorials for some folks.
-
^Like me. 50 hours invested but no victory yet :/
-
What I'm hearing is, Old World continues to offer you a challenging experience. 8)
-
^There is no denying that! I haven't played in about a month and now you have me missing it :/

I keep forgetting to post this:
It's a fascinating watch/listen. If nothing else, I have to love the genuine passion he clearly has for the subject material, though I also appreciate the time & thought he's put into it as well. I still think his philosophy on 1UPT is fundamentally flawed, but I can't really blame him for how/why he espouses it.
