The huge Me 321 'Gigant'



Around 200 were produced, and the design was also used as a basis for the powered Me323.

Paratroopers were absolutely, certifiably insane.  Jumping out of perfectly good planes is always suspect.  Gliders are only marginally more sane.
When the British para troops landed on the eastern edge of Normandy, brigadier Richard Gale promptly "liberated" A white horse and rode it for the next few weeks.  Apparently the German troops thought it was so funny that no serious attempt was made to snipe him.

"These things must be done delicately-- or you hurt the spell."  - The Wicked Witch of the West.
"We've got the torpedo damage temporarily shored up, the fires out and soon will have the ship back on an even keel. But I would suggest, sir, that if you have to take any more torpedoes, you take 'em on the starboard side."   Pops Healy, DCA USS Lexington.

My pop-in-law was a para, although he was not quite old enough to serve in WW2, but he did serve in Palestine at the end of the war.

One of the things that is interesting between the UK and US glider forces was the the Brit pilots belong to the Glider Pilots Regiment and were trained, on landing, to form a cohesive fighting unit. US pilots, apparently, enjoyed(?) no such organisation, and were pretty much left to do their own thing.

Weren't the American glider pilots also all officers?
