Special locations include: Citadels, Outposts and Abandoned Resources (which may or may not be traps...).
Hostile NPC's include: Thieves, Kidnappers, Gangers, and Sand Amazons.
I'll admit, I can appreciate the gonzo approach the devs are taking with this game.

I tried it, and, to be honest, was still not impressed. I would really hope that its cleaned up a lot prior to full release.

Yeah, impressions from the Prologue don't seem to be terribly favorable so far. I wonder/worry that a November release is rushing things.

Thus far, most comments (aside from the inevitable release-day bugs) seem to be fairly favorable. Probably the two biggest complaints I've seen so far is that: 1) the game doesn't really innovate, and 2) players are forced to complete the campaign before unlocking most of the skirmish maps. Personally, I probably have a bigger problem with the latter than the former.

An update dropped today, adding a new Skirmish map. In addition, the dev laid out a 12-month roadmap:

As you'll see from the screenshot below, a free DLC -- a "Survival Campaign" -- is planned to be released next month. The first for-sale DLC is a story campaign, planned to be released in February. There are also additional skirmish maps planned to be added in the next few months as well.
What I really wish, though, was that Punk Wars had a random map generator; it feels like the one major feature this solid (if . Skirmish maps are nice, but they're no substitute for random maps, especially in a 4x.
