Nice pic.

Some cameras (including in iPhones) allow you to shoot a 'burst' of pix that are milliseconds apart so you can choose just the right one from the results.

They should've just parked it all in the ARNG so you had it available if you wanted it.  There's several ADA BDE's out there in the ARNG where they could go

This is what happens when you let Marines write for the Army Times

https://www.armytimes.com/news/your-army/2018/10/30/reactivated-unit-gives-82nd-airborne-an-armored-component-that-packs-a-marine-corps-style-punch/ (https://www.armytimes.com/news/your-army/2018/10/30/reactivated-unit-gives-82nd-airborne-an-armored-component-that-packs-a-marine-corps-style-punch/)

Quote
More than three decades after getting out of the armor business, soldiers with the 82nd Airborne Division have reactivated a company that will add Marine Corps armored vehicles to its formation.

Last week, the All American Division reactivated Alpha Company, 4th Battalion, 68th Armored Regiment at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

The unit had been deactivated in 1984 after having served as the United States' only “airborne tank battalion,” according to the Fayetteville Observer.

Uh...  3-73 AR BN was active in the 82nd until 1997, and equipped with Sheridans.

Missile system never worked as advertised, but to accommodate the missile, you needed to mount a 152mm main gun, which was a bit large for the size of the chassis

Tank had to be lighter to airdrop, which meant lighter armor.  But too many planners (esp. the 82nd light-infantry-hooah-airborne-ranger-uber-alles brain trust) saw "turret + big gun + treads" and somehow came up with "just as good as any other tank" and ended up trying to use it in ways it shouldn't've been...

Yep. Mis-use was a big problem. Treating a light tank as an MBT never works out well.

Maybe they were trying to test airdropping tanks, starting with landing on something softer than land. Possibly an early stress-test leading to the infamous A-40 glider tank?

just eyeballing it, maybe low-to-mid 40s

tough to get something that big over 50mph; I'm speaking from experience here

and if it's combat-loaded, forget it. You'll top out around 50 if you're lucky, even with a tac idle on to rev up your RPMs.

I got a stripped-down M1A1 up to the low-60s once, but that was near-perfect conditions to do so, including knowing that the road in front of me was clear. You don't stop one of those very quickly when you're going that fast, so you have to know that the road is clear if you're going that fast.

Not a lot of abandoned sub-compacts on the range roads at Ft Hunter Liggett. I was more worried about a BFV being out there in the way.

Seeing this picture just brought to mind a memory.  Wasn't there a big fiasco after the Liberation of paris about british trucks?
There was supposed to be a three tonner(?) with a three piston engine, that couldn't handle the load.  Had to rely on american duce and a halfs and Studebakers for logisitics.  Think it was a major cause of the gasolene shortages because the planned trucks couldn't hack it.

I'm no tank designer but why would you want such a wide shot trap running all the way around the turret? It's something I've wondered about other tank designs as well. Why not slope the upper faces down a little more to narrow the gap?
Title: Re: Tanks!
Post by: mirth on November 17, 2019, 09:08:22 AM
Those are ERA add-ons around the turret. I don't know the particulars, but it's designed to deflect incoming warheads away from the vehicle or break them up. There's a combination of things that go into it.
Title: Re: Tanks!
Post by: Staggerwing on November 17, 2019, 10:14:47 AM
That makes sense. Still, you'd think that if a solid round impacted below the outermost edge that the ERA blast would just deflect the round down to impact lower with a downward angle. Maybe it's designed more for HEAT?
Title: Re: Tanks!
Post by: mirth on November 17, 2019, 10:31:55 AM
There's a good thread on ERA here
https://sturgeonshouse.ipbhost.com/topic/574-explosive-reactive-armor/

The most modern stuff (and that is a one of the most modern Russian kits in the pic) is intended to be effective against all types of rounds including APFDS. It's designed to warp and redirect the penetrator enough that it can't make it through the vehicle armor. Like I said, I don't know exactly how it works, but I'm guessing the Russkis know what they are doing.

Neat idea but looks a bit 'tippy' when fully deployed. Needs outriggers like a bucket-arm truck.

This is really neat.  Rather impractical, but fun.
Was this developed post Dunkerque?  The british considered a lot of wacky answers to the situation.

There was a display at the Imperial War Museum of the Bates Bottle Thrower.
It looked like a cannon, at first glance, but was a device that threw molotov cocktails out to about a hundred yards.  Worked like a slingshot with massive rubber bands to propel the coke bottles.

I think (without checking) that it was a pre-war idea and they didn't actually see active service. It was based on the Carden-Lloyd chassis, and you can quite clearly see the Universal carrier (Bren carrier) parentage.

The company that make them, Mark I Tanks, here in the UK, do quite a range of vehicles in different scales. They are mostly metal construction and feature thinks like digitised sound and smoke synced to the motor speed, also an option for firing BB and anamatronic figures.

The 1/4 scale Tiger II weighs in at around 250 kgs and will all the extra's and customised finish will set you back around £8k

Was the M4A3 used in any of the Firefly variants? f so, you could probably mod the kit with a few changes to the turret and gun, along with some other odds and ends. A large 3D printer or maybe a vacuforming set up could help with the larger mod pieces.

I read this in the article:
Quote
The Ajax also can’t back up over obstacles that are 20 centimeters (7.87 inches) high, and the vehicle has suspension problems that prevent the new 40-millimeter gun from firing on the move. Because of these problems and more, the British Army has limited soldiers to spending just 105 minutes inside the vehicle at a time and restricted the vehicle to driving at just 20 miles per hour.

and wondered how in the world this vehicle was ever accepted as something the British army would want, until I read further and saw adding extra armor to the vehicle might be the reason for all these problems. Not being able to fire on the move seems like a big problem in modern warfare.

had a facebook discussion about tank rates of fire and I snagged my part of it in case any of y'all were interested

Quote
So this is going to take a second, but bear with me.  There's 2 facets that affect the 'rate of fire' for an M1: the way you calculate the firing times on the range, and where the ammo is stored in the tank

Reload times, and range shenanigans
There is a standard published in the tank crew gunnery skills test that you have to be able to reload the main gun in under 6 seconds, or we don't even let you on the range. (caveat: it was 6 seconds when last I was on an M1, which was over 10 years ago; it could've changed, but it's still going to be pretty low).  So at a minimum, from the time the gun recoils, and ejects the aft-cap of the previous round, you have 6 seconds trigger the knee switch on the ammo door, pull out your next round, get it into the gun, hit the safety rod, and announce "UP!" that the round is ready to fire (and make sure you're out of the way of the upcoming recoil, too).  There are guys that'll do it in 3 seconds, consistently.
Now, that's a test in a stationary tank in a controlled environment.  What about the range?
There are gunnery engagements when you're on a scored tank range where you'll get 2 or 3 different targets to shoot, and your score depends on how quickly you knock them all down.  Remember those 3-6 second reload times?  They'll consistently hit targets 3-4 seconds apart.  In fact, you'll have some crews hitting targets 1-2 seconds apart.  Some of that is training, and some of it is gamesmanship.
When you fire the main gun, you kick up a lot of dust.  That dust will obscure the gunner's optical sights (tho not usually the thermals).  When your sights are obscured, you call out "OBSCURATION" to let the tank commander know you can't see.  This is very important in a battle b/c they're not necessarily using the same sights inside the tank (they can but often don't).  The TC will help reorient the gun, and when the gunner finds the next target, called "IDENTIFIED" and the battle drill continues.  The gamesmanship is this: when the gunner calls "OBSCURATION" the time between targets stops on the scorecard in the tower at the range.  Once you identify the net target, the time starts again.  A clever gunner will call "OBSCURATION" no matter what, while looking for the next target, so once it's identified and the time starts, the main gun is already reloaded and everyone's ready to shoot, and that's often 1-2 seconds between targets.
So they are rarely so legitimately fast that they are actually hitting targets in under 2 seconds.  But they're *required* to be fast enough to be reloaded in under 6 seconds, and after that it's up to the TC/gunner to find the target to shoot.

Ammo storage
Officially, the M1A1-series holds 40 rounds of 120mm ammo.  But that doesn't mean you have 40 rounds to shoot.  There are 3 separate racks of ammo in the tank: 2 in the turret and one in the hull.
The "ready" rack is right behind the loader, has a door with the knee switch, and is where he pulls ammo from during the engagement.  Depending on your M1 model, there's either 17 or 18 rounds in here, but there's 2 of them in the top corner that are a son of an unholy bitch to get to.
The "semi-ready" rack is behind the tank commander.  These are in the turret, but not where the loader can access during a fight b/c there's a guy in the way.  During a lull in the fight, you transfer ammo from the semi-ready rack to the ready rack for the loader to replenish.  A good crew can move 8-10 rounds in under 5 minutes.
The rest of the ammo is stored down in the hull, where you have to spin the turret to a certain angle, and point the gun a certain way so the breech isn't in your way, and pull those rounds out of the hull storage.  It sucks as much as it sounds.  Even an awesome crew takes at least 10 minutes to get those out and into the loader's ready rack.

So all of that is to say that just b/c you hear that an Abrams "rate of fire" is ____ don't put too much stock into it.  It depends on how you're calculating time between shots (are you breaking range ties for obscuration?  counting target acquisition time?)  It depends on how many rounds you're trying to fire before having to replenish the ready rack.  And it (as always) depends on how good your crew is.

Looks like a bit of a shot trap between the hull front and the turret

Interesting

At 5:40 he's talking about whether the commander's head should be in or out - and he says western school of thought is that it should be out because what you don't see kills you. They've clearly not played Combat Mission!!  :silly:

IIRC, the IDF was big on having the tank commander keeping his head up- a fine balance between engagement-winning situational awareness and increased TC turnover.

*Sigh*   It can indeed be difficult to find a soul mate who can be proficient with one's main gun...

Yes, Rifled or Smooth-Bore can be such divisive issue. Particularly if one's not aware of what you're getting until hot action begins.

Admiral Dan Gallery, who captured U505, was known for his quirky sense of humor.
He once posted a notice on a ship that was going to cross the equator.

The Coriolis effect is the known spin of objects away from the equator.  It is theorized that a small stream of fluid will demonstrate this.  It is highly recommended that the crew test tbis.  North of the equator, there will be a clockwise twist.  South there will be a counter clockwise twist.  At the equator there will be no twist.  Please report any findings.
The ships Water King was furious about the water usage.

Among the responses were: twist of the stream is influenced by twisting the instrument.
Twist of t he stream is controlled by the instruments rifling.
Smooth bore, no twist.

What about the, uhmm, instrument's inherent laminar flow?

I could see a problem with Premature Discharge of the weapon. Not mine of course! No. Never. Not even once.
