Title: Strategic Command
Post by: ojsdad on December 05, 2019, 11:10:16 AM
Matrix Games has released Strategic Command: World War I today.  Has any one jumped on it yet.

Also, I see that Matrix is offering a bundle on their 3 Strategic Command games, SC: WWII in Europe, SC: WWi, and SC WWII World at War.  The bundle is $56.79 right now, and I'll be getting my anniversary couple in a few days.  So are they a good game.

I'm guessing that this series would work much better for WWI than it ever did for WWII.
But that's just me... I've got the new WWI: Europe version and it still didn't grab me even with hexes.  :oh:

WarPlan is a better game IMHO.

This series has never appealed to me for some reason I can't put my finger on.

Same here. I thought it was the squares vs hexes thing but the new hex version just doesn't hold my attention either....and the naval model just doesn't work as far as I'm concerned.

The Blue Max 2D Counter and Map Mod (https://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=4719822) really improves the look of the game:

No, I haven't put the proper amount of time into the game yet. I'm also curious to see if any type of stalemate occurs on the Western Front.

Nice review.  :bigthumb:

I played the original hexy Strategic Command quite a bit back when Karens still ruled the Interwebzies but the later tile games seemed a bit clunky with their macro-style units and terrain occasionally forced into more micro-style battles such as Market-Garden.

Who am I trying to fool.  It had me at WWI.  When I get my Matrix couplon, I'll be buying.

Thanks for the write-up, bbmike!  I'd already had my eye out for this one, and your article doesn't lessen my wanting to get it.  :)

Mike, any input on the naval portion of the game.

I'm curious about this as well.

GOG currently has the game on sale for 25% off, so I went ahead and picked it up.  May try and play it this weekend, if I can find a few nanoseconds free in which to do so.

So, I see that you can only have a single unit in a hex, is that true?  Seems kind of restrictive.

Also, the one negative review I saw on Steam stated that naval warfare was one of the big reasons for it.

Still, I"ll probably give it a go.

Ugh. If that's accurate, the naval combat sounds terrible.

Here is what the person said about naval combat.  Overall the reviews are positive.  There is more to this persons review, both positive and negative.

EDIT: I changed my review to "not recommend". It may seem to be countering the summary and my multiple praises, but the sea battle system broke it for me. It is so unrealistic, gamey and obsolete that it turns sea battles into individual skirmishes between ships, rather than grand battles as in the real world. As you can imagine, the attacker gets to choose what to do and he can use his heavy ships to destroy your light ships before you get to react - you have to wait for your turn, there is no automatic firing. This is something that Panzer General from the 90s did much better and this is inexcusable. I tried to love this game, but it's not nearly as good as I expected.

Isn't the base of this game Time of Fury? If so, I remember I loved Time of Fury with all it's customisations and the gameplay was very good too - deep. However I also recall not playing it for long because naval warfare and amphib stuff was just shit.

I could be wrong about SC being from ToF stock

Is there actually a strategic game out there that has got naval operations right?

Sc has nothing to do with ToF.

I'm liking War Plan from Matrix right now for strat level hex counter computer game. It plays well and the naval aspect actually works well.
