Another great podcast! One thing you guys failed to mention was VR. I think Tabletop Simulator will take off even more as VR improves. I don't see TTS replacing physical board games yet (Kindle hasn't replaced books) but it is certainly here to stay.

Fair point, but I didn't speak to it as I don't have it.  Given the way my vision works, I'm not sure I ever will get to.  Honestly, for me -- not for the younglings but for me -- it has remained a fascinating toy of limited interest.  I'd like to be able to try it, but probably leave it at that.

Excellent podcast and just too many good points of view of the benefits of TTS. ( sorry vassal and others, i just love flexibility not more chore to setup a game )

The "hassle" to drive X amount of hours to a club ( because all the close ones don't exist anymore ) is a biggie for me. And honestly don't feel comfortable with folk populating my house as much as I don't feel comfortable with invading others homes.

TTS shines in that.

More so, TTS releases the creative gamer. One can more easily setup variants.

Downside... no hands on approach and no human touch to it.

Season 5 of Mentioned in Dispatches has now kicked off

https://www.armchairdragoons.com/podcast/mentioned-in-dispatches-season-5-episode-1-the-cold-war/

I was finally able to listen to the the first podcast of season 1. Excellent discussion. So much so I dug out my print copies of Harpoon and 2nd Fleet. They haven't seen the light of day for some time.

I also learned about Stephen Newberg. His games were mentioned frequently and I had not heard of any of them.

Anyway, there were soooooo many interesting games brought up in the podcast I decided to list them all. The games and one book listed here are almost entirely from the podcast. There are two games I stumbled upon while looking these other games up that I thought I would share. Not all the games discussed during the podcast are listed here. There were at least five games dealing with WWII I don't have on this list. Please keep in mind the games are not listed in order of being mentioned in the podcast.

Mentioned in Dispatches, Season 5 Episode 1 – The Cold War!

Air War: Modern Tactical Air Combat (1977)

Foxbat & Phantom: Tactical Aerial Combat in the 1970's (1973)

Series: Fleet (Victory Games)

The Harpoon Series - boardgame / miniature

The Harpoon Series - computer games

Battle Stations: An Operational Game of Modern Seapower (1984)

Air War '80 (1979)

Mercenary Air Squadron (2007)

The Speed of Heat (1992)

Air Superiority (1987)

Flight Leader (1986)

Birds of Prey - Air Combat in the Jet Age (2008)

Hornet Leader (1991)

Hornet Leader II (2005)

Blue Water Navy: The War at Sea (2019)

Red Storm: The Air War Over Central Germany, 1987 (2019)

Seapower & the State (1982)

Tac Air (1987)

One game that I think was mentioned in passing and I was surprised wasn't discussed more:

NATO Air Commander (2018)

Games not talked about, which I stumbled upon while compiling this list.

Sea Power (1982)

Logistics Command (1978)

Other games mentioned not about the Cold War:

Downtown: Air War Over Hanoi, 1965-1972 (2004)

PQ-17: Arctic Naval Operations 1941-1943 (2009)

Line of Battle (Second Edition) (2006)

Book mentioned in discussion:

How Navies Fight: The U.S. Navy and Its Allies by Frank Uhlig. Published by  US Naval Institute Press

Nope, not taken the wrong way at all. :)

I look at it as a team effort. You do the hard work of producing the podcast. I'm happy to create a list for the show notes. As long as I can find the time, I'll continue to post links to the relevant, games, info and books discussed.  :bigthumb:

S5 E2

https://www.armchairdragoons.com/podcast/mentioned-in-dispatches-season-5-episode-2-distributed-gaming-tabletop-simulator/

This was difficult. Due to the nature of TTS, there are many different version of the games that were discussed during the podcast. Instead of trying to provide links to them, or provide links to search results at Steam, I'm only going to list some of the games. You can track them down using the Steam Workshop's search tool to find most of them. I am linking to Cyrano's workshop and I'm also linking to Mr. Stump's workshop. Don't forget Mr. Stump's Flex Table! (List to the podcast if you want to learn why.)  ;)

I also decided not to record all the games mentioned. Not all of them were pertinent to the topic and were only mentioned in passing. For example, Warhammer and Hanseatic Wheat Orgy.  :)

I'll start off with a link to an older Mentioned in Dispatches from season three episode four. This was the first podcast in which Cyrano and OJsDad were joined by Barthheart to talk about, you guess it, Tabletop Simulator as the main topic. It is a good primer for anyone not familiar with TTS. Mentioned in Dispatches, S3 E4 – Tabletoply Simulatin’

Next up, Cyrano mentions the blog Promethis in Aspic

Here is Cyrano's workshop where you can find a lot of the content he's created and shared for TTS.

Here is Cyrano's YouTube Channel where you can watch many of the SNF using TTS.

Here is a short list of some of the games he's played using TTS:
  • La Grande Battles Borodino
  • Commands and Colors Napoleonics
  • Battle of River Platt - Fletcher Pratt
  • Battle of Lake Eerie - SPI 1982 Fighting Sail
  • A Sprint Over the Blood River
  • What a Tanker
OJsDad discusses his work with Der Welt Kreig and a computer language called Lua, which is used for scripting in TTS. You can learn more about Lua here: Learning Lua - A beginner's guide to scripting

Here's Mr. Stump's Workshop

Other games and designers discussed:
  • Modiphius - Siege of the Citadel
  • Cole Whorly - Root and John Company
  • David Thompson - all of his games. For example Castle Itter
Finally, Cyrano brought up The Battle Ground Series produced by Tyne Tees Colour with Edward Woodward as the host and narrator.

This link leads you to a playlist on YouTube of the Battleground series.

I found one full episode in excellent condition which was the episode about Gettysburg:

Oooh!

That's a much better cut of that video than I've seen.

Nice to see Dr. G that way.

Fine work!
