RPGs! No, the other kind!

Still behind my time with these. I'll get caught up! For me, this was not an easy listener's guide to create. There are so many different versions and editions for the same role playing game, I wasn't always sure what to include. I also wasn't always sure I had the right game. If I made a mistake, let me know.  :)

For this guide, I will link to the family of games from a title when possible and at other times I'll link directly to a specific edition. I know I missed a few games this time round. Please add what you want to the thread, or tell me and I'll add it to my post. This time I'm going to list the games and items as they were discussed. With that, here we go!

Dungeons & Dragons

Dungeons & Dragons Basic Set (First Edition) (1977)

Gamma World (1st Edition)

Star Trek: The Role Playing Game (FASA)

Star Trek - the family of Star Trek games

Barlowe's guide to extraterrestrials 2nd ed. by Wayne Barlowe, Ian Summers, Beth Meacham.

Star Fleet Battles (1979)

The Keep on the Borderlands (1980)

Brandt brought up an article written by Gary Gygax about how much of an influence Mr. Tolkien was, or was not, on D&D. I wasn't able to find a link to the article on the open web; however, if you are really keen on reading it, and if you looked hard enough, I know you can find it. Here is what you need to know to discover it:
  • The influence of J. R. R. Tolkien on the D&D and AD&D games by Gary Gygax.- Issue #95 of Dragon Magazine March of 1985
Appendix N from the Dungeon Masters Guide is available on the open web and just to make sure it doesn't "wink away" like many webpages are prone to due, this copy is archived at the Internet Archive:

Space 4X-iness

Much like the RPG episode, (#11), I'm including individual games and game series information. Near the end there is a discussion about what people are looking forward to in the future and I'm not listing a couple of those games because there just isn't any information about them currently. I'm looking at you Horizon 2 and Victoria 3!  :waiting:

I am not very knowledgeable about 4X games and I learned a lot from this episode. I've played Master of Orion and Starflight and that's about it. This of course means I may have linked to the wrong game, especially near the end of the discussion. Let me know if I goofed and I'll correct it straight away.

Note: if it isn't remotely 4x related, I'm not including it either. Sorry Duke Nukem and Orange Crush, better luck next time. Also, I really like the the upgraded embedded audio player on the website, very nice!  :bigthumb:

What Is A "Wargame"?

Here we are with the penultimate episode of MiD for season five. This was a great discussion. A lot of information was presented and I decided to divide it up into different categories. The items are generally listed in the order as they appear during the podcast. I hope I am linking to all the proper games. I wasn't sure which Tank Duel RockyMountainNavy was referring, until I discovered he wrote a follow up blog post about this podcast and learned it was the newer game, not the 1983 game. :)

I also wasn't sure about all the games on Brant's 2nd shelf. I'm sure Brant will let me know if I made any mistakes. As always, if you find a mistake let me know. On with the listener's guide!
