Nuts & Bolts of Online Conventions

Howdy and welcome to the six-month late listener's guide to episode 5. This one is not that extensive, mainly because, although there were games mentioned, I am not going to list the ones brought up in the course of the conversation. The focus was on online conventions and that will be my focus. I'm not going to provide links to Discord, or TTS or Zoom because I'm confident you all know them and if you don't, you know how to find them.

Some of the online tools mentioned for online conventions

Roll20

Fantasy Ground

Tabletop (dot) Events

Warhorn

The article Brant mentioned

Why Virtual Tabletop Conventions Fail, and How Organizers Can Fix It

And that’s it for this listener’s guide. Which is good, because I need to rest up for the 90 minute podcast which is episode 6. :)

you can play it online for free at the Internet Archive! Okay, I couldn't find a manual. I did find a list of answers to the questions they have at the beginning of the game to make sure you paid for it way back in 1991. Yes, 30 years ago!!

Answers to the questions
p4 = press
p6 = peace
p11 = administer
p13 = capital
p21 = strategic
p30 = move
p39 = economy
p46 = means
p49 = cabinet
p50 = Richmond

Finally, according to the Simulations Publications, Inc. (SPI) catalog from 1974, their address was:
44 East 23rd Street (9th flr.)
New York, N.Y. 10010

I have two address for Victory Games. From a business reply envelope:
43 West 33rd Street
New York, NY 10001

and from my registration card for 2nd Fleet:

The Annual Bison Migration

For this episode, there are many games I'm not going to list. For example: D&D, Panzer Blitz, Panzer Leader, Settlers of Catan, Gloomhaven, Don't Tread on Me, White Tribe, Sekigahara, Memoir 44, any of the Command & Colors games, ASL Starter Kits, Magic the Gathering or the BECMI series. These are items that have been linked to in past MiD episodes.

Some of the games listed below have also been discussed in the past and I'm including them because they played a larger role in the discussion, or they were games I wanted to learn more about. Here's the list:

Wing Span

Mystara Gazetteers

Calidar by Bruce Heard

Cityfight

Phase Line Smash

The original Air & Armor and the new updated Air & Armor

The original NATO: The Next War in Europe and the new updated NATO: The Cold War Goes Hot

McPherson's Ridge: The First Hours of Gettysburg

Battlewagon

Gettysburg

The U.S. Civil War

Pub Battles (Command Post Games)

Liberty or Death: The American Insurrection

Hold the Line

Index Card Role Playing Game -  There seem to be a couple different Index Card RPG systems and I'm not sure which one was first. I think it was the rule set published by Runehammer Games; however, I'm not positive.

Firefly Role-Playing Game

Dungeonesque

Battle Hymn Vol. 1: Gettysburg and Pea Ridge

Dominion

God's Fire

Stellar Conquest

Connections Online!

A lot of interesting discussion and not many specifically named games, books or articles this time. Like episode 8, I found links for the items I found the most interesting and not the items that have been discussed in past MiDs. This list appears approximately in the same order as they are discussed in this week's episode.

Starfleet Tactical - YouTube Play list

The main webpage for the Connections Wargaming Conference: Advancing and Preserving the Art, Science, and Application of Wargaming

Brant's Analysis of Aftershock: A Humanitarian Crisis Game

Guerrilla Checkers - scroll down. It is number four on the list.

Col. Matthew B. Caffrey's book On Wargaming

Brant's article about Fog of War(gaming)

Western Approaches Tactical Unit (WATU) - There are more links about WATU in Episode 8 of this season, so if you haven't looked at those yet, they are well worth the effort.

tough to bag on these guys for not doing even a cursory search of the title to see if there's already a wargaming show by our name, since there's also a WW1 history podcast with the same name that predates our by several years

But learn from our mistakes - do a basic google search for the proposed title

Here's episode 10. Great interview with Andrew Bucholtz. Let's start off with the book Mr. Bucholtz talks about reading as a wee lad:

Wargame Design Curriculum at CGSC

I find the discussions with Dr. Sterrett and his students about the Wargame Design program at the Command and General Staff College fascinating. They also make for short listener's guides, as usually not many games are mentioned. If you have the time and interest, I recommend looking at the thesis by Maj. Ebbets: Death Can Wait from 2018.

Holdfast: Korea 1950-51

Battle for Moscow - This is the Victory Point Games version, which Dr. Sterret describes. Brant asks if it was the free print and play version or the online version.

Holdfast: Russia 1941-42

Holdfast: Tunisia 1942-43

Star Wars: Trading Card Game

Twilight Struggle

Death can wait by Maj. C. J. Ebbets - this is the thesis/game about deploying a field hospital that Brant discusses when highlighting other projects by past students.
