I'm an avid podcast listener and I'm always doing something while I'm listening. Doing chores, working in the shop, driving, or exercising are when I listen.  I don't think I've ever sat down on the couch to listen to a podcast.

Even if I tried that, I'd get 45 seconds into it and the dog would be in my face for something

I stopped commuting before covid, which is why I'm so far behind. Of course, it's fun listening to science podcasts from early to mid 2020 when I know how it turns out.

Problem is though, if I'm doing something - I don't absorb. I literally am the woman's definition of a man - I cannot multi-task.

Even if I'm just clipping counters, I cannot focus on the podcast when I'm clipping - so it doesn't have to be anything that taxes my mind. I've tried listening with headphones on whilst cutting the grass or pottering around the house. No joy.

So I literally have to sit and really (and I mean really) focus on what's being said otherwise I miss something and end up rewinding.

I'd really like to take an hour or more and sit and listen and absorb - but I just can't sit still and concentrate on what's being said for that long.

I've even noticed more and more nowadays that I end up more often than not rewinding the TV so I can hear what was just said because even though I'm watching and listening, at some point, I wandered off and didn't focus.

I guess it's an age thing - but at 54, I'm not sure it should be this bad.

I have trouble listening to podcasts too.  I find most of them to be too slow and chatty.  I might be able to listen to them while I'm driving, but nowadays I don't drive much.  I can listen to them while mowing the lawn and doing yard work, or while clipping counters.

I actually strongly dislike podcasts where people just talk about some topic of the day, because I find that most people don't have much to say, resulting in a low signal to noise.  But I also hate talk TV shows and talk radio.  I used to have to take a shuttle at work, and sports radio would always be on, droning on about something.  The only podcasts I like are history or science podcasts, or maybe world affairs, but those tend to be focused on a subject and are tight and efficient.

I’ve spent half my life’s earning on wargames, women, and drink. The rest I wasted.

Mentioned in Dispatches Season 8 Episode 1
US Civil War/gaming

Surprise! I bet you weren't expecting show notes, eh? :)

I hope to finish season six and to also provide notes for season seven at some point during 2022. For now I'm concentrating on season eight. This is not a comprehensive list. I tried to keep my focus on providing links to US Civil War games; however, there are other games discussed that I thought should be included. I missed a couple games along the way and I'm sure I missed other interesting items as well. If you want something added, let me know, or better yet, add it in the forum. If I made a mistake, point it out and I'll correct it as soon as I can. Enjoy!

If you all had talked about the "100-odd games with 'Gettysburg' in the title" by name, they'd be in the show notes! Well, most of them at any rate.  ;D

Mentioned in Dispatches -  Season 8 Ep 2
Civilization-series games

https://www.armchairdragoons.com/podcast/mentioned-in-dispatches-season-8-ep-2-civilization-series-games/

Was able to listen to this today at work and quite enjoyed the conversation. Agree with y'all that multiplayer civ is a ton of fun. I'm in two multiplayer games now but since I don't work from home I'm that slow one who only can play in the evening or weekends. (Which oddly enough it seems like there are less turns during the weekends, which I attribute to all you work from home types being sick of sitting at your computers and taking a weekend away from them  :)   )

I do have a couple of follow up questions that I hope MD, Brant and OJ might jump in here and answers as I don't think they came up on the podcast.

First I noticed a couple of you say you didn't really enjoy the domination victory and was wondering if you had a favorite style to play or victory to shoot for?

Next any thoughts on using the option from the "random tech tree" in the game?

Finally what are your preferred game settings? (i.e. Game speed, map type etc)

Also, now I want more Civ multiplayer in my life as I don't think I've gotten to game w/ Brant or MD yet.

Great way to play. Changes up how you progress and makes you think on your advances.

Huge continental/terra/earth maps, max random players, marathon speed.

The only game I'm not 100% sure about is the Civilization: Call to Power game. I had not heard of it. OJDad refers to it as Call to Power. Brant lists it in the description; however, when I searched, I only find Civilization: Call to Power. Hope it is correct, if not, let me know.  :)

Thanks! Maybe we'll see who else wants to start a game soon. Now to get some answers from Brant, MD and OJ  :)
