Looking forward to listening to this over the weekend. In the meantime, I think you added an extra number "1", to the "recorded on" date. So instead of March 11th, it should be March 1st, right?

Mentioned in Dispatches Season 8 Episode 5
Looking Back at Wargames on Ukraine

Greetings and welcome to this week's listener's guide for MiD. My favorite quote during the discussion was from Mr. Train: “All models are wrong, but some are useful”. After a wee bit of searching, that quote is attributed to George E. P. Box. As usual, if I goofed and linked to the incorrect game, please let me know and I'll correct it as soon as possible.

At about the hour mark of the podcast you all are discussing different ways of including uncertainty and chaos into these games. One factor was incompetent leadership. As Brant described it: that one moron issued to every company by CIF. Brant, you suggested trying to model poor leadership doesn't work well because the participants will not take what the game is trying to model seriously and they will argue their plan was fine, it was the "poor leadership" card that messed them up. This made me wonder, aren't the players of the game potentially that "poor leader" who is issued by CIF ? I can see this not working so well in a solo game; however, in multiplayer games, I've seen this happen. Goodness knows I've been that moron issued by CIF on a couple occasions!  ;D

Depends on the echelon.  Sometimes you have idiots throughout the lower echelon units, but not up above.  Or vice versa.  Problem is, you might not find them until the fur starts to fly.

Oh boy, what a goof! Truly embarrassed about that.  :-[

I also just realized I didn't include Mr. Train's version of Ukrainian Crisis published by Hollandspiele either. I'll fix that now.

Mare Nostrum (2003) - two copies!

That's actually the base game plus a boxed expansion, rather than 2 copies.

I appreciate the mixing of Euros in with the wargames on the shelf. It's a technique I employ to lure in unsuspecting opponents. "Oh, sure Wilderness War is basically just like Imperial Settlers."

That's what I get for not quoting you directly! :) I went back to double check and you said, "two boxes worth of Mare Nostrum", which I incorrectly interpreted as two copies of the same game.  ;D
