Title: What 4x game are you most looking forward to?
Post by: Martok on June 23, 2021, 04:20:09 AM
Despite the frustrating lack of info, Distant Worlds 2 remains at the top of my most-wanted list.  If there's any one game that can rival -- or surpass -- Stellaris' "living galaxy" feeling that I so crave, then DW2 is definitely it.

The Master of Magic remake is a close second for me.  I've always wanted to try this one, but have found the original difficult to get into.  And as I have mentioned before, I badly need -- NEED, dang it! -- a new fantasy 4x (even if this isn't "new", per se).

Galactic Civilizations IV is another one I'm keeping a close eye on.  Still needs lots of fleshing out -- not surprising, given that they've just entered alpha -- but it shows a lot of promise.  It's nice to see Stardock being a bit more innovative with their design this time around.

Not yet announced:  Horizon 2.  This one has been in the slow-cooker for a few years now; and while I devoutly hope we'll see *something* before Christmastime, I suspect that realistically it won't be until 2022 that we get any real news.  I haven't got into the original game as much as Anguille as, but there are definitely aspects of it that I like and/or appreciate, and am very much looking forward to seeing what the sequel brings.

Being a 4x addict, i am pretty sure i'll get all of them....

That being said, Horizon 2 is on the top of my list: turn-based, good diplomacy, tactical combat, multiple research, unique travel technique used in game (but no starlanes) being some of the key features that make it my number one. As Martok said, i don't think it's going to make the cut for 2021.

Distant Worlds 2 is a close follow-up and hope they can improve on the graphics and UI before it's released.

Galactic Civilization 4 is going to be another big game and i like the fact that Brad opened the game so soon so they will integrate all the feedback. (official release is only 2022).

I think we should still mention Lord of Rigel....progress is very slow but i am pretty sure it's going to be released at some point (but not 2021 either).

So for 2021, it's going to be Distant Worlds 2 and Humankind for me. I am still waiting for Old World to come to steam.

Falling frontier looks good. Reminds me of Haegemonia. Not sure if Terra invicta and Falling frontier can be counted as 4x games though.

Humankind. The Civilization series needs more competition and I hope Humankind is the beginning of that.

Yeah, it's been too long coming.

Looking forward to DW2 [unless it's already out? I'm out of the loop these days so forgive the ignorance]

I also have Falling Frontier on my wishlist.

I voted DW2, but looking forward to Humankind.

Argh; forgot to add the MoM remake to the poll.  Fixed.

Being a 4x addict, i am pretty sure i'll get all of them....

I know I'll get most of them.

The two big questions marks for me are Old World and Humankind -- the former, because I'm not getting it unless & until it becomes available on Steam, and the latter because I'm just not convinced it's the Civ-type game I'm looking for (although I do have hopes for it).

I think we should still mention Lord of Rigel....progress is very slow but i am pretty sure it's going to be released at some point (but not 2021 either).

It's been so long since we've heard anything on that one, that I'd kinda forgotten about it.  Last I'd heard, the devs were planning an Early-Access release for later this year, but I'm skeptical.  I suspect you're correct that we won't see anything until 2022.

Yeah, Terra Invicta comes across as more of a grand-strategy game, and Falling Frontier looks like an RTS.  I don't think Terra Invicta is the game for me, but I am interested in Falling Frontiers.

Humankind - despite the title - which I think is terrible and reminds me of George Costanza’s fake charity The Human Fund in Seinfeld.

That said, the civilization customization in Humankind looks great, sort of like customizing a player’s character in an RPG. I really hope Amplitude puts the same production values, slick veneer and love into this they have in the Endless games.  If they do, Humankind will be a true winner and I hope to play hundreds of hours of it...many more than I have Civ VI, which I do not like much.

Amplitude has said Humankind is the game they've building towards making all along -- the Endless games were, to some degree, proof-of-concepts for them.  Given that, I would imagine they're putting forth all their skill & experience into this one.  Fingers crossed it turns out well.  :)

DW2

Hopefully just a few more months...!

but I still need play a complete game of Civ 6.

Do you really, though?

Most/all of them?

Well, yes; that almost goes without saying.  :P  There's not one that you're particularly chomping at the bit for, though?

I am attempting to trying adulting in my gaming habits and complete a game/campaign in the new games I purchase. Of course, I have already fallen behind the power curve on this goal. CIV 6, WHTW2 and now Battletech and Grim Dawn.

Adulting is overrated.

Anyone played Horizon and liked it? If you didn't like it, what should be changed in Horizon 2 (the game will be fairly different anyway)?

I think I've mentioned it before, but there are some aspects of the UI I'm not overly fond of, especially regarding ship movement on the galaxy map.  (On the other hand, I do appreciate the tooltips; I think it's one of the earliest games I've seen to make extensive use of them.)

Moreover, I've always found combat to be clunky and unintuitive.  It felt like there was probably a decent system lurking somewhere underneath, but I've never been able to get a handle on it.

The UI will be totaly new for Horizon 2. On the other hand, did you know you can just make a right click to move a ship or a fleet? No need to go in the sub-menu for ships.

This was improved in patches and all the battles start when ships are fairly close to one another. But again, this is going to be different in Horizon 2.

The two things I didn't care much for were the UI and the technology tree. Good to hear that the UI will be new. Hopefully the tech tree will change as well. I didn't care much for the 'increasing number' of a tech to make it better. It kills immersion.

That said, I do like Horizon and am looking forward to see what Horizon 2 will bring. OH, and the ability to mod the game is also a huge plus.  8)

I keep leaning towards 'Age of Wonders Plantefall' but read so many negative comments about it that it keeps putting me off.

I did, in fact.  That might actually what I had the biggest issue with, as it was often tricky to move ships to nearby star systems (due to how ships are displayed).

In any case, however, I know this is something that will be improved in Horizon 2 (as you mentioned), so I'm not terribly concerned about it.

I still found them clunky and rather difficult to manage even after all the updates.  (Bear in mind the majority of of my time playing Horizon came *after* the devs were done patching the game.)  Again, however, I'm aware combat is another feature being improved/overhauled for the sequel.

I keep leaning towards 'Age of Wonders Plantefall' but read so many negative comments about it that it keeps putting me off.

It's not my personal cup of tea, but I definitely don't think it's a bad game.  My main critiques of Planetfall are that it's too heavily focused on war and the tactical battles (the latter start to feel repetitive after a while); and that the empire-management side is (at times) overly-complex to hide its lack of depth.  That's just my own take, however.

Truth be told (to play devil's advocate), Planetfall does a lot of things well:  Diverse factions/races, pretty cool unit rosters for each, the in-game "mods" allow for wide variation in how you spec your units, interesting lore, a high degree of replayability, nice visuals & art style, the excellent tactical combat system (even if it's over-used), solid production values, and a high degree of polish that has left relatively few bugs.

Bear in mind, too, that Planetfall has solid scores amongst both players and "professional" reviewers, and has clearly sold at least reasonably well (else Triumph wouldn't have continued to make DLC for it, regardless of Paradox's business model), so it must be doing *something* right.  Whether those "something's" are what you're looking for in a 4x/strategy game, however, largely depends on what appeals to you.  ;)

Hello, gamers! Well, I liked the Master Of Magic remake. At the same time, according to alpha and beta test reviews, I find the Galactic Civilizations game will be really bad. Only Horizon 2 is looking really good for me, and I think this game can be one of the best games in 2022. It also needs to be mentioned that the last operations in the CS: GO game are really good, making this game really better, especially what you can link removed just playing this game.
