Title: The Hunted: Twilight of the U-Boats, 1943-45
Post by: BanzaiCat on January 28, 2020, 01:56:50 PM
Just received notification that my P500 order of The Hunted: Twilight of the U-Boats, 1943-45 (https://www.gmtgames.com/p-590-the-hunted-twilight-of-the-u-boats-1943-45.aspx) is charged and will be shipping soon. I'd forgotten about this and can't wait to catch sh*t at home for it, LOL.

Did anyone else sign up for this one?

Has anyone played the original The Hunters? I heard it was terrific and a copy of the original has always been priced impossibly high. I know GMT did a reprint of The Hunters (or is in the process of doing this), but I thought The Hunted would be much more interesting and challenging.

Oh, cool, they made / are making a series from that classic duology??

Oh yes. The Hunted is on its third printing and this is a new version I think. Silent Victory is a game I played a bit a few years ago and these are based on that system as well.

I have and have played quite a bit of The Hunters. Fun in the same sense that B-17 Queen of the Skies is fun, the narrative. Few real decision points but great story.
Plays much quicker than B-17 QotS. You can do a whole U-boat carrier in about 2 hours... depending on how lucky/unlucky you are.

I didn't get The Hunted though... one game of this style was enough for me.

It's been a while since I played Silent Victory. Not even sure if I still have it or if it's one of the games I sold before I moved. It might be in storage at the moment.

Sigh. Like I need more games. I'd forgotten about this P500.

The only other one I have right now is for Mr. President, but that won't come out probably until closer to the end of this year.

I have all three games in my shopping cart.

I fill out small amounts every day or two.

This makes me feel better.  I get to feel like I may buy it, and then I get to feel responsible for not buying it. Win win!(?) >:D

That's what I did with P500s last year. I had to cull a half dozen or so of them from my list.

"Wanting" and "able to afford" are two separate things, heh.  :-\

At a little more than US 30 a pop (on P500), I could afford all three of them at once, with some budgeting elsewhere.

I just couldn't play them at any time anywhere feasibly.

I can pick up any of them on Vassal for free at any time, for example, and two of them (Hunters and SVic) have some very nice ports to TTS. Am I playing them? ha! So what does that tell me?

That tells me that any money I spent on them would be purely out of gratitude to the publishers, devs, and designers; I would never really play them. I have nowhere to play them anyway.

I would be much happier just playing the current Uboat PC attempt (still in development alpha), and/or mod-patched SH3, 4, and/or 5. The latter of which by the way I have never tried to play, although I'm pretty sure I bought them...

I just got notice a few days ago that my order for the Hunters is being shipped. Am I to understand correctly that the Hunted has come out and is being shipped as well?

I only have an order in for The Hunted, and have yet to receive a shipping notice.

I just got a shipping update from UPS re: GMT Games. As far as I know, it can only be The Hunted.

Me, too. Only game I'm waiting on is The Hunted. It should arrive tomorrow according to UPS.

My copy arrived and man it's loaded. Can't wait to try it.

Though a lot of the enablers on BGG told me, when I mentioned I hadn't played The Hunters, that I really needed to get that one as it would be a lot easier to play. The Hunted is supposed to be incredibly unforgiving and brutal, which makes sense considering the timeframe.

I went and looked at The Hunters page and was surprised to see it was $45. I thought it would have gone up in price once the P500s for its third printing shipped; I guess I was wrong, or maybe I caught it just in time. Regardless, there's a long-ass U-Boat campaign in the near future for me. :)

After I went through The Hunted, I was pretty sure it would be better to have a U-Boat crew start from the beginning, and gain some skills, rather than a newbie one in 1943. That would be a quick road to the bottom of the Atlantic.

That's priority 1 as far as AARs are concerned. Gotta finish what I start regardless of outcome.

Yes, it would be good to see a conclusion to the NA AAR :-)
