Title: ...and while we're at it..........
Post by: bob48 on September 14, 2018, 05:48:53 PM
Another  large, expensive game which I'll likely never get me sticky paws on, but intend to drool about anyway!

https://www.victorypointgames.com/thunder-in-the-east/

Yes, I know its been discussed..........elsewhere............

Yes, Bart, it is in the right thread.

Ok, I'm just gonna randomly place stuff around too.

I've given up on strategic level East Front board games. I've come to the conclusion that they only really work on the PC.

Ok, now I'm wondering how this is in the right place.

Age of gunpowder, innit?

And I quote; 'From the first matchlocks to motorized warfare'

So then we're all still in the actual 'Age of Gunpowder' right now?

According to Brant's classification; yes.

Obviously, there is room for discussion here, as its quite possible that the next category could well be more appropriate:

From the internal combustion engine until to the present day and near future

We need to seek clarification from our glorious leader!

Yeah, I think "motorized warfare" and "internal combustion engine" might be the problem.

Yeah, I think "motorized warfare" and "internal combustion engine" might be the problem.

Indeed, I concur. Some adjustment of the boundary would seem to be desirable in order to prevent future altercations.

And a spele chucker wood be handie

Or you could take my approach and post anywhere and let the mods figure it out ;)

I'm going to suggest that rather than the somewhat vague forum description that seems to be at the root of the confusion, "Age of Gunpowder" means from the invasion of Italy by Charles VIII of France in 1494 to the end of the 19th Century.  WWI and definitely WWII should be in "The Modern World."

I was going to say that maybe the beginning of the 20th Century should be the break point (or the end of the 19th cent. - which ever you prefer).

And the Chinese even earlier? I think it should be split by era, personally. :nerd:

Wikipedia seems to follow this. It states that the Age of Gunpowder is considered to end around 1902.

I could just create one mass "wargaming" forum and let y'all figure it out yourselves.

I was trying to avoid the endless CSW-style rabbit-holes of endless granularity

There's a little gray area between Gunpowder and Modern, at least to me.

I really think a break point between 19th and 20th centuries would do the trick.

Eastern Front Solitaire by Omega Games is a great title. It doesn't get a lot of love but it's pretty simple, large-scale, and easy to play in one sitting.

You could also argue that mechanized warfare started in the 1860s when countries started moving large numbers of troops by train.

Still, we need some kind of delineation so a year-based one is probably best.

Best, for me, is DC3 Decisive Command: Barbarossa. Excellent all round experience. And playing the Germans is very different from playing the Russians. Not too many unit so you get bored of moving stuff, but enough so you get a proper feel for the scale.
Easy to just jump in and start pushing units around and blowing shit up. But deep enough if you want to spend the time to learn the detailed combat system.
Really can not say enough good things about the game.

Thanks for the tip, and yes, I have heard good things about it. However, and not wishing to nit-pick, but isn't this an operational level game (Divisions) where as what we were originally talking about was strategic (corps - army) level?

I knew you were. I was more responding to Barth. There's a metric tonne of Eastern Front large-scale games that are very overwhelming, but I always found EFS to be a very approachable and fun game.

Well, I would consider it corps/army level decision making with div/corps level maneuver elements.

And weren't the Muslims using cannon in Spain in the 1300's?

Cannon were used by multiple armies prior to 1494. John of Gaunt used twelve guns to batter the walls of Harfleur during his siege of the town during the Hundred Years War. However, they were almost entirely siege guns, fired stone ammunition, and weren't integrated into maneuver forces at all. The Age of Gunpowder/beginning of Modern Warfare is universally agreed on by historians as the Italian Wars.

The Italian Wars, particularly the "Renaissance Blitzkrieg" of Charles VIII through Italy saw the first use of field artillery and widespread deployment of firearm-using infantry. The combination of mobility and artillery firepower inherent in French armies, combined with the infantry innovations of the Swiss, and the use of arquebusiers by the Spanish (and the financing of armies by the new banking families) ended the Age of Chivalry and caused the development of radically new methods of fortifications to replace the curtain walls of medieval castles, which couldn't stand up to cannon and more mobile, larger armies.

Equally, the introduction of the widespread use of machine guns and trench warfare ended the domination of the rifleman.

"Age of Gunpowder" means a specific thing.

Can ya catch that from strippers?

Bad glitter is airborne, particularly in hot desert climates. Sometimes just driving in the vicinity of a strip club can do it.
