230BC to 10ADI've decided to let Washington and New York finish their current production since they are so close to completion. It is agonizing to do so as I really want to build up the military.
There are currently two archers in Washington and one in New York. I will send the two in Washington to try to take back Boston from the barbarians. I can't cross water without the Sailing technology so I will have to ask the Zulu for an 'Open Borders' treaty. I don't expect them to accept, but if they do I'm sure it will cost me a lot. Luckily, the Zulu (though they don't look happy about it) agree!
With the treaty signed, I let the two archers continue their journey to take back Boston.
Since Washington is starving no matter how I place the citizen workers, I move a citizen to increase my hammer output by one.
In 200 BC I discover Monotheism. This lets me choose the Organized Religion civic and so I do. I am also reminded of just how much I miss Leonard Nimoy doing the voiceover for the technologies.
For my next technology I choose Sailing. I need to be able to move units across water since I am at the mercy of the Zulu with the Open Borders treaty.
In 155 BC the Oracle is built in New York. This grants me one free technology. The only choice for me here is Sailing. I have to be able to move units across water ASAP.
I choose to research Metal Casting next.
Meanwhile, those two archers pass by the city of Bulawayo. Hmm, that's a LOT of Zulu units! This is worrisome. I know the Zulu don't play nice in CivIV (or any version of Civ for that matter) and wish I had a stronger army.
As the archers near Boston, I can see only one axeman. It may be possible to retake the city.
And I meet the Ethiopians. Is everyone angry in this game?
Closer to home, things are looking bad. That stack of Zulu units has left Bulawayo and is now moving south towards New York.
80 BC, and there it is. Shaka declares war on me. I knew this was bound to happen, but I was hoping for a little more time first. It's a respectable stack of Zulu units.
Time for a new plan. The two archers have reached the outskirts of Boston, but I decide to order them to Bulawayo instead. Maybe if the Zulu feel threatened there they will pull their army back to defend their city. Or maybe they left Bulawayo undefended. Either way, it's a plan.
Upon reaching Bulawayo, I discover two impi units in the city. I risk attacking and it proves to be a bad idea. Both archer units are lost. I did manage to kill an impi unit first. With the loss, I've decided to switch to the Slavery civic. I hate to do it, but it will let me rush the military units I now so desperately need.
The Zulu army reaches New York and attacks. By some miracle, New York survives!
There are three archer units in New York and I send them all north to Bulawayo. Maybe I'm being too aggressive, but I need to stop the Zulu. The archers arrive in 10AD and find three units in Bulawayo: an axeman, an impi, and an archer.
So there we are. What do I do now? I doubt the three archers can take Bulawayo. Do I try for peace and keep building up my army? I only have one other archer (in Washington) right now. In five turns I will have two more. Meanwhile, the barbarians are still partying in Boston. It's just a matter of time before another civilizations gets there before I do. Now that I have Sailing I could try for Boston again. I'm wondering if I should have just continued with the original attack. I could try again with some of the archers I currently have near Bulawayo. Also, I don't know if Metal Casting is what I should be researching next. Hmm.
A parting look at my troubled civilization:
