Dev Diary #306 - Habitat Experiments:

https://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/developer-diary/stellaris-dev-diary-306-habitat-experiments.1594678/

There are numerous issues with Habitats as they're currently implemented, so the devs have been trying out a few different things with them to find something that works better.  Having just one "Central Complex" strikes me as a good idea; fingers crossed it pans out.

3.9 "Caelum" update releases tomorrow:

https://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/developer-diary/stellaris-dev-diary-312-3-9-caelum-patch-notes-and-ask-us-anything.1598278/

Highlights include a major rework to Habitats and jobs that produce trade value (clerks, merchants, etc.).  The Plantoids, Humanoids, and Lithoid species packs are also getting significant buffs/additions.

On a related note, today is the last day to get those older species pack DLC's at their original lower price before they're bumped up to the same price as the newer ones ($9.99).

The first patch following the release of the Cosmic Storms DLC has dropped:

https://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/threads/dev-team-3-13-1-patch-released-checksum-e6fd.1704383/

Easily the biggest change/improvement with this patch is the removal of Nexus storms from the early game.  It was simply too crippling.

...And they've already begun teasing The Grand Archive DLC.

Unlike Cosmic Storms, I'm pretty excited for this one.  :)

Could not be less interested in Storms or the mech thing but really looking forward to the Grand Archive.

What did you think of the Mech thingy?

What did you think of the Mech thingy?

If you're referring to The Machine Age expansion, I fucking love it.  LOVE.  IT.

In my honest opinion, it rivals Utopia as Stellaris' best-ever DLC, and may have even surpassed it, which is not something I say lightly.  It's one of the few DLC's I would have been happy paying full-price for (though I still wasn't going to pass up the opportunity for a discount by purchasing the Season 8 Expansion Pass :P ).  There's a reason it's 1 of only 2 DLC's with a "Very Positive" rating on Steam (the Aquatics species pack being the other one).  The sheer amount of content -- and *good* content, at that -- The Machine Age adds to the game is literally incomparable.

Now granted, if you have no interest in playing robotic and/or cybernetic species in Stellaris, then the majority of what The Machine Age has to offer isn't likely to appeal to you.  There are the mid-game "kilo-structures" (Arc Furnace and Dyson Swarm) and the new end-game crisis, however, so there's still at least something for everyone -- though, of course, if you decide to grab the DLC for just those features, you're better of waiting until it goes on sale next year.

But for anyone who might be waffling about getting The Machine Age, or wanting an opinion before picking it up, then I cannot recommend it strongly enough.  This is the best DLC Stellaris has seen in years.  Period.

Haha, you're welcome?  I really wasn't trying to change your mind or talk you into getting it.  I just find The Machine Age genuinely makes the game that much more fun (and therefore gives me great value for my money), is all.  By all means, at least wait until it's on sale if you're not sure.  :)

One thing that's been frustrating me with Paradox, is that they release DLC like this almost too often.  I play with a number of mods, and some of these require modders a few weeks to make updates to be compatible.  Even not purchasing the DLC, the update can cause issues.  For someone like me that just wants a nice casual game, I get a little frustrated with having to restart because I haven't completed a game.

Here at ACD, we all pee the same color.

Yeah, it's not so much the frequent release of DLC that's the problem per se, it's the frequency of major updates that break mods.

Like you, I play with a good number of them installed, and it's frustrating (to say the least) that I have to choose between either abandoning my current campaign and starting a new one; or continuing my current campaign on the older version of the game, but then risking that it could break down at any time due to one or more of my mods no longer working as they get updated to the latest version of the game.  it's a pretty problem.

On top of that, most mod creators (at least the ones I'm aware of) really don't enjoy having to update their mods every time a new major update releases.  It's a massive PITA, and is draining of both their time & energy, especially when they (inevitably) have whiny/demanding players constantly harassing them to "update plz".  >:(  Small wonder so many of them burn out, and stop updating/working on their mods altogether.

Don't get me wrong:  Of course it's great that Paradox games continue to receive regular updates for years after launch; that goes without saying.  However, it genuinely does massively suck that said updates break everything whenever they drop.  I dearly wish there was a better way.

Stellaris Dev Diary #356 - Building a Grand Archive and Displaying Your Collection:

https://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/developer-diary/stellaris-dev-diary-356-building-a-grand-archive-and-displaying-your-collection.1706729/

Nice.  Lots of good stuff here.

To start off with, in case it wasn't already clear, the ***Grand Archive*** DLC is focused around science & exploration, and will synergize well with similarly-themed DLC such as Distant Stars, Ancient Relics, and Astral Planes.  Indeed, the developers went and "refreshed" the content in those three particular DLC's (along with various content in the base game) specifically so that it will work better with Grand Archive.  :sunglasses:

As for the Grand Archive itself, it appears it's another "kilo-structure", similar to the Arc Furnace and Dyson Swarm that were introduced in the recent ***Machine Age*** expansion.  Both the technology & resource requirements for the Grand Archive are pretty modest, so you'll be able to build it pretty early on.  Every empire can only build one, and you probably want to place it at your homeworld, or at least somewhere in your core sector where it will be well-protected.

From reading the dev diary, the Grand Archive is essentially the British Museum or Smithsonian *IN SPAAAACE!!*  You can display up to a total of 27 "Specimens" -- 9 each from 3 categories (Aesthetic Wonders, Galactic History, Xeno Geology), and of varying availability (Common, Rare, Epic, Exceptional).  Displaying each Specimen has a cost, but also bestows a benefit of some kind.  You'll likely end up acquiring more Specimens than you have exhibition space for,; so you may choose to rotate them, or sell off your excess Specimens if you like.

Interestingly, the Grand Archive is one of the few types of mega-structures that can be destroyed:  If you destroy another empire's Grand Archive, you'll automatically be rewarded with some Specimens that you ~~raided~~ preserved from destruction.  Specimens can also be traded with other empires via the diplomacy screen.

Once you’ve researched Galactic Archivism (which also lets you build the Grand Archive), you gain access to the Archivsm Traditions. These new traditions largely focus on improving either your Scientists' overall abilities, and/or the Exhibition "output" from the Specimens on display in your Grand Archive.  However, almost certainly the most notable of these new traditions is "Frontier Archeology", which allows your Scientists to -- at last!! -- excavate Archeological Sites in unowned star systems.  I'm almost unreasonably excited about this.

There's also a new Civic called "Galactic Curators", along with similar Civics for hive minds, machine empires, and even genocidal empires:  Galactic Curators really leans into the new Specimens mechanic, as well as rewarding your empire with a chunk of Unity every time you complete an Archeology dig.  You also receive bonuses when interacting with the Curator enclave.

Speaking of the Curator enclave, there are now additional options & interactions available when contacting them in the diplomacy screen.  For a price, they may offer rare (or better) Specimens from their personal collection to display in your Grand Archive.  You can also ask them for various things (again, at a price), such as specialized museum plans, or help setting up cultural enrichment programs.

And then on the base game, the Custodians team has done a rather major cleanup & overhaul of the game settings screen.  I gotta say, it looks good.  These are the kinds of quality-of-life improvements I really appreciate.  8)

Stellaris Dev Diary #357 -The Care and Feeding of Tiyanki:

https://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/developer-diary/stellaris-dev-diary-357-the-care-and-feeding-of-tiyanki.1708290/

Short version:  You'll be able to capture space fauna and not only place them in a "zoo", but also breed them for battle if you wish.  There's even a new set of Traditions (Domestication) and a new Civic (Beastmasters) that will allow you to lean into this ability -- essentially, you can have your entire navy be comprised of semi-tamed dangerous animals organic "ships".
