Too many things to go wrong - maintenance to keep 'em flying must be a nightmare, especially under operational conditions. Bring back the Harrier, I say.

I still can't understand why they didn't go for a conventional carrier with modified Euro fighters. I gather that the Typhoon would have been perfectly capable of being modified for carrier use.

I don't really get that either. I guess it was a cost issue for the carriers. A CATOBAR system is a lot more expensive than adding a ski-jump ramp to the bow flight deck.

Unfortunately, given on how the cost of the F35 has escalated, it has probably proved to be false economy.

I suspect the RN was focused on getting the carriers funded first and worry about the air wing later.

You Brits may have a worse budgeting and procurement process than we do. Probably better than the Canadians though  :D

Maybe so, but successive governments couldn't make up their minds about what config carrier to build. You have to wonder how closely the RN was consulted about what they wanted. One suspect some gov palms were greased.

The 'Stringbag' - we've been lucky enough to see it in flight a couple of times.

The STOVL version the Marines operate is a very complicated machine.

Marines playing with breakables... what could go wrong, right?  ;)

I doubt he could pull himself away from his 'art film' shoots long enough to respond! :)
