Title: #$@#'in P500s
Post by: BanzaiCat on April 06, 2019, 04:51:26 PM
Sigh. I now have SEVEN games on P500 order. As long as they don't all hit at the same time, I should be good. Considering they're all probably a year or more away from deployment, who knows. My luck they'll all drop at the same time.

- Stalingrad '42 (https://www.gmtgames.com/p-715-stalingrad-42.aspx)
- Mr. President (https://www.gmtgames.com/p-555-mr-president.aspx)
- Beneath the Med (https://www.gmtgames.com/p-697-beneath-the-med.aspx)
- The Hunters (3rd Printing) (https://www.armchairdragoons.com/forum/index.php?action=post;board=34.0)
- The Hunted: Twilight of the U-Boats, 1943-45 (https://www.gmtgames.com/p-590-the-hunted-twilight-of-the-u-boats-1943-45.aspx)
- Atlantic Chase (https://www.gmtgames.com/p-706-atlantic-chase.aspx)
- Absolute War (https://www.gmtgames.com/p-573-absolute-war.aspx)

Those last two I just added today. Though in my defense I had about ten tabs open pointed at other P500 games, so I pared it down significantly.

It's REALLY easy to do this when you don't have to actually pay up front. And knowing they'll send a warning message before they charge to give me a heads-up in case I want to change my mind - nice.

JOIN ME, BROTHERS!

You give ME grief, but I'm not by far the worst P500...err...signer-upper.

I'm glad you're entertained, mirthie.

Oh yeah, by the way, add this one to the list

- Wing Leader: Victories 1940-42 (https://www.gmtgames.com/p-673-wing-leader-victories-1940-1942-2nd-ed.aspx)

Just trying to out-harlot you, mirth. You've set the bar high yourself, not sure if I can ever catch up to you.

I've done one P-500 ever.

You're the game whore champ, pal.  :bigthumb:

Yeah... :-[

Well, we'll see. I admit I wouldn't sign up for all of these if I knew my CC would be charged immediately. The buffer they offer of reaching out before charging is a nice lifeline, just in case.

I might need to sell games to pay for new ones, though.  :D It's like, supply-side economical or something.

I've never really been satisfied with P-500s. They charge early and you always seem to end up waiting longer than expected. And the savings never seems to be enough to justify the frustration.

That's food for thought. I can always go in and cancel an order.

The only two I really would like are, Mr. President and Stalingrad '42. The others I can live without. I'm especially taken in by Mr. President, since it's solo and I think would make a most excellent narrative story for an AAR.

I think the low cost compared to the list price is what drives me to 'oh what the heck, add it to the list.' But you may be right, it might not be worth it if they want to charge me three months before they ship it. :(

It's rare that I can't find a game through a third-party vendor that doesn't offer a discount that comes in close to the P-500 price. And if I can get it on Amazon, I can avoid the shipping cost.

Lord knows I love GMT games, but I rarely order direct from GMT these days.

Goddammit, ojsdad  >:(

lol

[edit] actually that one has a rather low solitaire suitability, so it's safe from my machinations.

what's funny is that BC is on the podcast we just dropped yesterday, talking about pre-orders / p500s....

Coincidence?

if it's not, then the alternative is that we're getting a level of credit for planning/influence that we quite frankly don't deserve

What is this 'planning' of which you speak?

I've never really been satisfied with P-500s. They charge early and you always seem to end up waiting longer than expected. And the savings never seems to be enough to justify the frustration.

Interestingly, GMT just dropped Scramble for Africa from it's P500 list.

yep, and the predictable whining online is turning it into a social media shitshow, too

I saw a little of that, but not being familiar with the game, I just scratch my head.  I was only posting because of Mirth's comment on how GMT' handles P500

there's plenty of utterly predictable whining about the shuttering of the game, but the bottom line us that the game was built around the competitive exploitation of natives, and their mistreatment, revolts, genocide, etc were reduced to mere random events in the game instead of being legitimate considerations for the way the colonial powers behaved

It completely removed any agency from the native populations and treated them as pure resources to be exploited and their grievances as inconveniences to be overcome.  It was easy to see why GMT would dial it back

That hasn't stopped the inevitable "ZOMG THEY HATES HISTORY WHATS WRONG WITH GMT I HATEZ THEMZ!" false equivalency over-reactions on social media, of course  ::)

Wow, just read through (what's left of) some threads at BGG on this game. I had no idea about the controversy. I remember reading the P500 blurb on it a while back and deciding it wasn't for me. I hope there's no GMT backlash at Origins.

The kind of guys that are pissed about this are the same ones that swore off Origins after the Larry Correia fiasco last year.

No matter your stance on Larry Correia either way, there's no question at all that Origins bungled the handling and subsequent rescinding of the invitation for him to be a guest of honor.

Actually, Brant, the reason why I went back and added Wing Leader and the other last two from that list is from listening to 'our' Podcast episode. ;D

As for Scramble for Africa, like one poster in that thread said, I just assumed it was a newer version of Source of the Nile (which I own, in storage somewhere). The crayons in it sucked, though, so it was hard to draw on the board.

I saw your post, Brant.  :2funny:
