Title: Vietnam or Korea tactical
Post by: judgedredd on May 30, 2020, 06:55:17 PM
So I may have posted before about this...but it's still a subject matter that seems to evade me.

Apologies if I'm repeating myself...

I have LnL Tactical Heroes of the Nam. Good game
and I enjoy it.

But still,  I feel I'm missing something in the Vietnam/Korean era.

I have Silver Bayonet  25th anniversary edition...but doesn't look like the scale I'm looking for. I haven't played it, I've clipped all the counters and I took photos today to sell it because...mainly, the scale doesn't suit me. But I've not put it up for sale yet...the quality of the game looks great.

Basically, I want to fight Ia Drang in platoon or squad level. That's really the scale and the specific action I'm looking for...

Failing that, a nice Korean company/platoon level game would be nice

I may have tired some of you out...but if you have any suggestions, of appreciate it

Yes, there is (Forgotten War), but it's at the squad level.  And Mr. Dredd has said before that he didn't really like ASL.

Avalanche Press has a Korean tactical level game in the Panzer Grenadier line. http://www.avalanchepress.com/gameCounterAttack.php (http://www.avalanchepress.com/gameCounterAttack.php)

there are the games from HFD (high flying dice) ... maybe still too high?  (I believe the counters are companies and battalions)

Well...ASL certainly wasn't for me - but as for squad level, I think at the time I was looking for a single man chit game. I'm well aware (after looking for a long time) that most games are not single man.

I've accepted that I need to look above that scale and into squad/platoon and even, depending on the scale of the conflict, company in some cases. But I don't want to go to strategic level - like Hearts and Minds.

As I say - I've got Silver Bayonet and was about to sell it because the Ia Drang fight in it is not at all the scale I'm looking for (iirc the US has 3 chits - so it's at company level).

I did consider FoF - but I've read a fair few people mentioning a good system ruined by vague rules. Also, I'm not a massive fan of the that "kind" of game. I even sold my Warfighter game. I like chits/counters and maps - not cards making up terrain (though I see huge playability in those kinds of games).

No and no - but thank you for the suggestions.

I think I may be being too specific. Most games seem to be strategic - but of course that isn't my only "want"...I want chits, nice maps, good looking, informative chits, easy manual and game system.

I think I'll give Silver Bayonet a go before I pass it on...so I'm making an informed decision. It is a cracking looking game and has a great mounted map. I at least owe it to get it to the table.

Also - maybe I should bite the bullet and consider something of the strategic nature covering the whole war like Fire in the Lake or Hearts and Minds...broaden my horizons a bit.

Thank you.

Victory Games did a Korean War game that was really good - not sure, but I think the one done by Compass is a remake.

Compass has "Yalu!". I have a copy that has the new version and the original rules. Nice game, but definitely not squad level. I'm not sure how interesting squad/platoon level would be for either conflict. For an Ia Drang focus, Silver Bayonet is the way to go.

NO, you're right - I did not read JD's post properly - The Victory Game's game and the new one by Compass are Operational level.

Yeah - but it's company level and there just doesn't seem a lot to do and no room for tactical maneuver. I kind of wanted the scale where I could employ some tactics.

So actually rather than looking for a Vietnam game per se - I'm looking for an Ia Drang game.

Thanks but I can't see that for sale outside the US. I know there's print and play - but I didn't really want P+P

The block mechanic works nicely in FoD. I do hate stickering the blocks though.

Being honest, I've never actually ever played any block games, so I'm just engaging in a bit of the old wind-up :-)
