Title: How Do You Organize Your Game Collection?
Post by: bbmike on September 27, 2021, 08:39:06 AM
I'm getting ready to completely reorganize the study/game room/studio and was wondering how my fellow Dragoons sort their games on the shelf. Do you sort by publisher, title, subject, alphabetically, size, color, or some other way? I'm leaning towards either by box size or publisher right now.

I organise by publisher/box size/shelf size in that order.

Boxed stuff that will stand up on the shelves are loosely organized chronologically by conflict, with a few allowances here or there for box-tetris purposes

Flat-packs are stacked on the bottom shelf in such as way as to not fall of the shelf.

Magazines / folios are sorted by series and/or publisher in plastic magazine stand-up boxes

Fantasy / RPG / Sci-fi / Eurogame stuff is elsewhere

At present, my entire collection, such as it is, fits comfortably on two book shelves.

What is this "organize" word? "Sort?" The English language (or an approximation) is still spoken here, right?

Heck, I don't even know where most of my games are. I desperately need to clean out the storage thing. And my office. And probably a lot of other things too.  :-[

I did clean out a couple of filing cabinet drawers for the print-n-play and PDF miniature rules I've been getting. It's just that none of the rules have made it into the drawers yet.  :'(

I'm going to die by being crushed by a pile of gaming materials, aren't I?  :worried: That is why I'm never going near ASL, by the way.  :nope:

 :sigh:

I hope you take some pictures once everything is all organized.

Right now to keep all my games safe from the kids hands they are shut up in a closet and I wouldn't say organized in the traditional sense of the word.  ;D  But I know where everything is, I promise.

Oh, several 'Games Dungeons' shall suffice, and kept well ABOVE 'Floorganizing' levels to avoid further 'Floods Destructions', because: "enough destroyed, already!"

I organize my games by when they were bought. Early games on the shelves standing up, later games shoved flat in the spaces between the tops of the earlier games and the bottoms of the shelves above them, and the newest acquisitions first sit on the floor leaning against the leg of my desk for a bit and then they are moved to the stack on floor just front of the shelves already stuffed full of games.

Isn't that how everyone does it?!   ???

These days mostly in cardboard boxes. Sad reality.

Yes, yes you do.  As with most of Cusack's best films, it is very quotable.  But that's for another thread.

I have far too many with too little room to do any kind of coherent organization. Usually, heavier/larger game boxes go on the bottom while the lighter stuff is on top. My older games (30+ years old) go on the very top to avoid any kind of weight or pressure damage to them. The other boxes for the newer games are much sturdier.

I have half a closet relatively full, plus a top shelf with about 10 more, and then an old hutch that's pretty much full, too.

Mine are chronological.

For those that overlap or cover an entire war, I generally start with the general games that cover the entire war, then by theater, and then chronologically for each theater.

In whatever haphazard way that I can.  ;D

Okay, it's mostly by box size/shape. I have things that need to stay flat stacked, then I have things that can go on their side lined up on other shelves. That's about it. Anything more than that just seems like it would be a nightmare to maintain as new games come in.

I'm going to be rearranging my office over Thanksgiving break and clearing out a couple of boxes I don't need but also redoing several bookshelves.

Over the last 6-8 weeks or so, I've added
Imperial Struggle
Monty's Gamble
King Philips War
T2K
Brief Border Wars
NATO
Iron Curtain
1995: Milosevic's Last Gamble

and I'm running out of space in my current configuration

Could you come over and do my office while you're at it?

And bring a forklift. Or possibly a bulldozer.

They're just all under my desk at the moment. A bit of a pita when I want to play a game and it's at the bottom of the pile

Organization... hmmm...

Nope, never heard of it. There's empty spaces and that's where the next box goes.

I'd suggest storing them sideways, along their long edge, if you can. Then, you only need to slide the one out that you want to play, as opposed to them laying flat on top of each other and having to deal with that.
