Well it should be a playable game and 75% off by 2026. :D

I understand the excitement for the game. I am just not a fan of Paradox development style. Pretty sure I still have scar tissue from pre-ordering Hearts of Iron...

pre-ordering
Hearts of Iron
I found your problem.

Paradox: Designers of soul-crushingly complex games.
I own several versions of Hearts of Iron and have never finished a game. I know I have Vicky 1 and probably V2. I finally came to my senses and stopped buying Paradox games during Steam sales.

If there’s an adequate tutorial on the economy and how to do things then I may be in
In the MP game I had with tuna and barthheart (I think) I never got anywhere close to unifying Italy or been able to declare war on wayward Italian regions
-
I have Victoria II, but have not played it. I do love Paradox games though. I find they are of varying degrees of complexity. Some I grok. Some I do not grok. But the ones I do understand, I have 1000s of hours in.
-
I've had HoI for a long time but never ever been really able to get to grips with it.

Wasn't that you, me, and Tuna? That one was Pride of Nations. Anyway, it doesn't really matter if PDOX makes a tutorial because 3 months later, the bastards will release a patch or a DLC that completely rewrites how the economy works and the tutorial will be worthless yet still present in ingame links, leading to even more confusion. They do this will all their in-house games. Drives me nuts.

Sorry buddy, it was a long time ago!!

This 100%. I learned my lesson with CK2 and decided to never get on the DLC treadmill again.

Yep SDR is right, it was him, not Barth, and it was Pride of Nations, I was really enjoying that game at the time.
-
I'm really hoping we get a remake of Pride of Nations on the new game engine.

I was as well. Right up until the point where I went to war with the Crimean Khanate and discovered that they got infinite reinforcements every turn so there was no way to beat them.
-
I made handbags and shoes

I would not be sad if this were to happen as well. PoN was often a frustrating game, but I really liked the concept, and somehow I found it far more interesting than I ever did Vicky 2.
I made handbags and shoes
Okay, this comment made me bust a gut laughing -- both on its own merits, but even more so because (of all things) it sparked my memory of your guys' play-through of that game. Well done, 'geek.
-
Pride of Nations was an outstanding game, but it was built on a game engine that couldn't handle all of what was going on.
-
^ Agreed. It had a lot of features & mechanics I enjoyed, although some of them were rather opaque and/or not explained very well. Also: those dang turn times...
Still, I would love it if AGEOD made a PoN 2. *That* would probably be a Day 1 purchase for me, actually.
-
It would be for me.
-
In all honesty, timing is going to be key to whether this is a day one purchase for me or not. Distant World is at the top of my list for new purchases. Humankind is #2. I have a few cheaper ones on my list also. If V3 comes out in 4th quarter, then by May will be able to get it on sale. So there is that. But, I really love the time frame and the economic aspects of it.
-
First Dev Video has been released. Topics and time in the video when it is covered.
00:27 - Pops
02:12 - Capacities
04:32 - Buildings
07:52 - Goods
09:48 - Production Methods
-
I actually looked at Vicky2 gain this weekend. I have not reinstalled but am highly considering it. At this point, the only factor holding me back is my Stellaris campaign.
-
I too have always found Victoria and Pride of Nations extremely complex but this thread has conjured a potential new winning strategy for me...making handbags and shoes for the Crimean Khanate. A win-win!
-
Will they match I hope?
-
You thinking of buying some?
....for a friend, of course.
-
Will they match I hope?
Not only will they match, they won't make you look fat.
-
I think you’ll find I’m quite important in the Milanese handbag and shoe export business
-
Major customer?
-
Maybe we can strike a deal, ucg. Opportunities!!
-
I can’t unify Italy for shit but if you want leather fashion items - I’m you’re man
-
^Quotable classic.
-
I can’t unify Italy for shit but if you want leather fashion items - I’m you’re man
Especially those that cater to...more specialised requirements.

Sounds like a spanking-good deal. ::)

Well the good news (for you), then, is that Vicky 3 isn't coming out until next year. So your wallet can cry a bit less...for now. >:D
But yes, the release of Distant Worlds 2 and Knights of Honor II: Sovereign (which are both at the top of my wishlist) are still nigh...

I think we may be lucky to see DW2 in Dec.

I was wondering how they were going to approach the topic. Honestly, with a game like Victoria, I can't think of any other way to handle it.

As the saying goes: We’re not mad, just disappointed.
Last week the Victoria 3 dev team was alerted that streams of an in-development build of the game shared with a small group of testers was being broadcast within a small online community. As these things go, this footage quickly ended up in public. As hype grew around the leaked video so did demands for more, and before long links to download a cracked version of the leaked build started getting shared around.
We understand you’re excited about the game - we are too, and we’re anxious to share it with you properly! But there’s a reason why we haven’t yet launched Victoria 3 in open beta, Early Access, or similar. Yes, the game is technically in a playable state, but its current lack of balance and level of polish obscures many aspects of the mechanics and how they interrelate. Some interfaces are tedious or just not fun to engage with yet. It lacks a lot of crucial AI work, contains game-breaking bugs, and has only the most rudimentary tutorial and player guidance. Especially in an interconnected game like Victoria, just a single deficiency like that can have a negative domino effect on the whole experience of playing the game.
We can explain at length in dev diaries how our mechanics work and what our intentions with them are, but once you get a feel for how the game mechanics work in action, all those words lose their meaning. So when something isn’t fully realized in the game yet, you’re going to come away with an inaccurate impression of what we intend it to be. That’s not good for either of us, and it greatly damages our ability to have an open dialogue with you. If what you want is less interaction between developers and community and a more closely guarded development for future Paradox projects, then leaks like this are the single best way to try and make that happen.
We have (of course) read many of the posts community members have made since playing the leak, both positive and negative ones. Fact is, no matter how in-depth or insightful, none of them identify anything that’s new or surprising to us. Many of the concerns raised were already scheduled to be addressed in the development plan up to release. Even the most positive posts about how fun and engaging the game is even in an unbalanced, unpolished state are tainted with the knowledge that this first impression is still a let-down compared to what it ought to have been. For this reason, none of the feedback we’ve gotten as a result of the leak is really actionable or of any real use to us. It has mainly served as a hit to the team’s morale and a distraction from finishing the game, and in fact made it harder for us to act on your feedback, tainted as it is now by all the factors mentioned above.
Once the game has reached a state where we could really benefit from and respond to your feedback, we’ll be eager to be able to properly show it to you. Paradox has always maintained a quite open development process, and in the Victoria dev team we intend to double down on that responsiveness to community input because we think that’s what’s best for the game. But for that communication and trust to work, you have to also trust that if we’re not showing you something yet it’s because it really isn’t ready to be shown.
Before the leak, we were already looking forward to streaming the game in the near future, and to focus more on showing off in the game in motion, and we’re of course still planning to do this! We understand your curiosity and how excited you are for the game and what has happened isn’t going to change our focus on delivering a great game at release. However, while doing so, we can’t help feeling disappointed and demoralized by how all of this went down.
The Vicky 3 dev team

I dunno, it feels like they could've said "screw y'all; we're taking 2 weeks off to go to tahiti and when we come back we're going to finish the game with absolutely no more previews, early access, behind-the-scenes looks, or dev diaries and you're gonna have to deal with it for acting like a bunch of spoiled, self-entitled twats"
and I would've been totally OK with it and probably cheering them on for it.

Hell. They might as well preserve this for their post-release statement. Given the post-release beta testing and bug patching Paradox normally does anyway.
It does stink that their beta testing was leaked and a build released. It's going to put additional pressure on the development team.
-
I think they're very disappointed about the leaked copy. But what's worse, is all of these idiots think they're helping by posting their issues in the forum.

So PDXCON 2022 has been announced, and it's taking place the weekend of Sept. 2-3...
During the video, Wiz announces (around the 2:20 mark) that 500 attendees will be among the first people to play Vicky 3 (those who have gotten their hands on the leaked version aside). Given when the con is happening, it makes me wonder if the game isn't going to come out until next year now.
-
I’d say so too if the first peek is September

I was thinking a release during the holidays. But your most likely correct after the first of the year. Hard to support a new release during the holidays with staff on vacation.
-
^ Yeah, that was my thinking as well. I'm guessing a February or April 2023 release is far more likely at this point.

I'm not. V3 was announced 13 months ago, and Paradox seems to not make these announcements until a fair amount of work has already been done.
-
ParadoxCon is Sept 2-3. So I would guess a release date between mid Sept and end of Oct. That would give them time to deal with any major issues before the holiday break at the end of Dec. I could be wrong and they don't release until Nov, but I wouldn't think they'd want to go far past mid Nov. An Oct release would give Paradox some time after some people get there hands on V3 at the Con to perhaps make a few tweeks that get from feedback.

whilst i love the game, its concept and everything it has to offer - am i wrong in thinking Great Britain is going to win - isnt this the pinnacle of her power - why would i play as Italy or Spain or am i looking at the game wrong

When V3 starts, yes, England has a lead on the others. However, Germany has a chance to unite, China has potential if it can navigate both internal and external politics, The US is just starting to grow westward, and of course, don't forget Russia. Plenty of room for others to grow and beat England.

Whatever I might think about the game, I've gotta give credit to their art and graphics team(s). Vicky 3 is looking great (literally).

It does look pretty

Playing China from 1836-1936 would be amazingly epic and probably catastrophic for all but the best players.

I played often in V2. Loved taken them from a some what backwards agrarian country to top industrial and military powered.

This is a spectacularly good idea and the customisation of a tutorial to a player's wishes whilst remaining integrated within a "normal" campaign is the gold standard to my mind.
Whether they manage to pull it off remains to be seen but this proposed move has on its own prompted me to put Vicky 3 on my Steam wishlist.

Release date to be announced in 7 days.
Yes Brant, that's on Tuesday. I'm sure they'll announce shortly after you publish Tuesday Newsday.
-
I know Paradox are far from the only ones who do so (plus I realize they specifically do it to placate the fanboys), but man do I hate it when a person or company announces that they'll be making an announcement. It's like the whole "trailer for the trailer" nonsense we've seen crop up in the past few years. :kling:
At least this does strongly suggest that Vicky 3 is indeed releasing by year's end, though.
I'm sure they'll announce shortly after you publish Tuesday Newsday.
Just like the update for DW2. Right on schedule! :P

I'll disagree, simply because, not everyone that is interested in getting this or any other game, may follow as closely as others. So putting out that the release date is coming in a week, may help those pick up on it. Even if people are following pretty closely, they miss the announcement at first for various reasons.

Depended upon what nation you were playing. If you were the UK, you were swamped from day 1. If you were Japan, you kinda just twiddled your thumbs until events triggered that let you start playing in earnest.
Vicky 1 was a bit overwhelming due to the micromanagement involved with trading (and the developer's theories on how Victorian era economics worked was at serious odds with history). Vicky 2 went the other direction and it often felt like it was playing itself most of the time. Make a slider adjustment, watch the associated graphs to make sure the line was going in the direction you wanted, sit and watch time tick by.
-
I was mildly interested, on the fringes you might say, but
‘imported loads more wheat and invested in intensive farming methods in the more stable north of the country. I spent years suppressing the bloody Industrialists, who spent decades on the verge of revolution, and were a systematic thorn in my side. I also started bolstering my navy, in preparation for another war, and booted the church out of government, instantly giving it about 20% more legitimacy. As soon as my peace treaty with Denmark timed out, I took over the Northern chunk of Denmark. Everything's coming up Sweden!’
Sold me - good write up at RPS from someone who whilst playing the tutorial was asked to increase GDP to 1.5 million but realised not only in game but also in real life didn’t know how to increase a nations GDP so googled it for info and saw in game the tools to do it -
Very interesting in this
-

No. And I say that as a certified turn-based loving dude.

It’s out! Who bought it?
Me!! Got it downloaded and launched for all of 5 minutes. Will dive in some more after work.
-
Played Sweden with the tutorial for about 15 years. Managed to bankrupt my country. This game is extremely deep. EU IV is my bitch, but this is something on a whole different level. Will take a while to absorb everything. Basic concepts are easy to grasp, like building more buildings etc. Knowing what, and how many to build is an entirely different matter. My head now hurts... in a good way.
-
Played some more with a restart of Sweden, and better budgeting.
Some of the same concerns as the last Vicky, in that their is not a whole lot to do. Now of course it depends on which country you are playing. As Sweden I can build only 1 or 2 buildings per year, and not a whole lot else without going into debt. My next session I am probably just going to look at all the different screens in the UI, and come up with a strategy as to the best way of digesting all the information that is given to you. Have not even come close to figuring out the military aspects yet. Really just working on the whole economic, and internal political aspects of the game so far. Eventually I will work my way up to invading Denmark and creating a unified Scandinavia...... well that is the hope.
-
As I play the game, I am starting to see a lot of problems behind the curtain, that are not initially apparent. This guy does a great job of explaining some of the problems.
-
Ouch! That’s a pretty damning review.
-
This might be a ‘let it cook a bit’ for me - it’s not high on the list but I was looking forward to a grand strategy economic simulator
-
This might be a ‘let it cook a bit’ for me - it’s not high on the list but I was looking forward to a grand strategy economic simulator
That's the way I'm leaning now too.
-
Not all that unusual for a Paradox game. Or many others.
-
There was a time I’d jump straight in and ride the dlc wave as it went - I think if you miss out too much you get left behind and the game changes underneath you until you’ve no idea what’s happening
But for once there’s plenty more to play and I’m happy with my catalogue for now
-
... I think if you miss out too much you get left behind and the game changes underneath you until you’ve no idea what’s happening
...
This is exactly what happened to me and EU IV. I'm so far behind I'll never catch up.
-
You and me both and I lost track of ck2 so much it’ll be easier to get 3 and start again
-
Starting watch the review video posted above. A couple of quick thoughts on it;
He states that there is no reason to have older military unit designs over new ones, line vs mechanized, etc. But he's wrong. The requirement to build maintain a mechanized unit are much higher than a squad infantry. You may not be able to afford to build all of the mech units you want and have to maintain some squad units. This is at least as I see it at the moment.
His next complaint is that a country like Oyo, if it develops line infantry, then it's the same stats as a US line infantry. But that's as it should be. Yes, each nation may have it's own variation on these units, but for the most part, they performed similar to each other. The differences came down to leadership, training, and supplies.
The third complaint that I've seen so far is that Oyo has the same tech tree as US. In V2, a country like Oyo had to become a westernized nation first. This was a double edged sword, in that it forces some countries to dig out of a deep hole from the start vs allowing even the poorest countries a start on the same field. Keep in mind, Oyo is not going to be as tech advanced, lacks the population, and economy probably do a lot. And, when they do develop various techs, i would they would be influenced by other countries and that it would be similar.
Just a few thoughts so far.
-
I suspect a lot of negativity is that it isn’t Victoria 2 but better, in much the same way that distant worlds 2 suffers from ‘but it isn’t distant universe’ with more
Perhaps they would have been better calling it colonialism emulator and avoid all the tears of the disappointed Victoria 2 fans - I haven’t played any Victoria and will eventually be coming in with no expectations which I think is probably the best way
None of the things it now does but didn’t and now should but shouldn’t is lost on my and I’m glad that I’m simply coming to a new game - when that day comes
-
You're most likely right UCG. If what was stated is true with capitalists and trade, then that is pretty significant. On the other hand, it may be like DW2, in which a lot of the same functionality is there, just implemented differently and not easy to find.
-
So I finally invaded Norway in my playthrough as Sweden.
Combat is garbage first, and foremost. So it wound up me invading with 30 battalions, and 18 conscript battalions. Against Norway's 10/4, and Denmark joining Norway which added some more. Had no idea how many fronts there were, but found out there were two once the war started. So I hired another general once I figured this out, to fight on the other front with some of the conscripts I was raising. Thought the war would be close due to Denmark's involvement. But the Kingdom of Two Sicily's joined me in the fight. Mind you I have no idea how their troops got to the Norwegian front, but their significant army was bigger then Norway, Sweden, and Denmark's combined. Also I never asked them for assistance. They just showed up. Only relations with them was a single trade route. So anyways, after I invaded.... on two fronts apparently, I got to watch little bars go from left to right, or right to left indicating battle progress. Thanks to Sicily, the bars moved in my favor. So I conquered Norway, and was left thinking this military system is even worse than I had heard.
The rest of the game is pretty much me just building buildings manually, as prices on certain goods get too high. Or if I cant produce a certain good in my buildings, I manually start an import trade route. Rinse, and repeat, over and over.
At this point I am regretting buying this, but we will see what the future holds. Till it gets better I am just going to stick with EU IV. While the combat system in EU IV is crap, it's light years ahead of this garbage.
The thing that had in the past made Vicky special, was the POP's autonomy. You actually felt like they were making decisions in growing the economy. No such thing here. You are doing everything, and frankly doing it, isn't all that exciting.

Lol. I love how self-congratulatory he sounds, despite the numerous issues many people have with the game right now. Classic Anward.

Considering how much I was looking forward to this I haven’t done a lot of research
I’m sure I’d love it - just haven’t got the time
