I wouldn't want to be the first guy to ride that thing.  :notme:

Even worse to be the last one...

Does anyone know - did the Germans nickname their aircraft - especially bombers - like American and British crews did?

The Bf-109s got nicknames- the D was Dora, the E was Emil, the F was Franz and the G was Gustav. Also, the 262 was the Schwalb, the Ju52 the Tante Ju, the Me410 the Horniss, the Ju87 the Stuka, the Me108 the Taifun, the Fw-190 the Wurger, etc, etc.

also, the Do-17 was the Flying Pencil.

No, sorry, I meant like Memphis Belle, or Lady Luck...that sort of nickname. Not the class name but individual bomber names, named by their crew/pilot.

Interesting question. I have never noticed such, but I'll have a look through some of my books.

I just had me a quick google and Erich Hartmann's 109G was nicknamed 'Lumpi' but I didn't run across any bomber nicknames. It could be that they just didn't paint the name on the plane in an easy-to-see area. I'd be surprised if it didn't happen at all though.

If you're looking to add a little flavor to an AAR of Amerika Bomber I'd say go ahead and name the plane anyway.

Nope, I've not found anything, although I have seen pictures of German tanks thus named.

The only bomber with a nickname that comes to mind was a Gotta bomber in WWI.
During the bombing of London, one of the Gothas had long snakes painted on the fusillage.  It was called The Serpent Machine.
Think in German this has a certain rhyme.

"These things must be done delicately-- or you hurt the spell."  - The Wicked Witch of the West.
