When observers from USN went to see how the RN early in the war, they knew nothing of the planes.
One officer was shocked to see a swordfish flying into the wind, practically hovering with it's very low stall speed.
"Who builds those?"
"Faireys."
"Of course, they do."
Always wondered why the admiralty put a surface officer in charge of the carrier that Scharnhorst bagged. You would think they would want a CO thoroughly familiar with carrier ops, now that war began.
