My dad was a red shirt (weapons) on carriers.  I got to spend some time on carriers both as a kid and as an adult, and calling it a "ballet" is completely appropriate.

One of the most impressive things I've witnessed in my life is flight ops at night.  And it's being conducted primarily by 20-something year old kids on a floating airport in the middle of the ocean.

My dad told me that on every cruise, at least one sailor would die.  Some of it was just from natural causes when you have a couple thousand people on the ship, but he told me gruesome stories of guys walking into turning props, or falling overboard, or some other machinery accident.

I’ve spent half my life’s earning on wargames, women, and drink. The rest I wasted.

During WWII, the planes were guided in to land by the LSO, Landing Safety Officer.  He was near the stern, right next to the arresting wires.
There was a net rigged a deckI below the flight deck for him to jump into when a plane was co.ing in to crash at the edge.
Not much talked about, but a number of LSOs missed the net.

"We've got the torpedo damage temporarily shored up, the fires out and soon will have the ship back on an even keel. But I would suggest, sir, that if you have to take any more torpedoes, you take 'em on the starboard side."   Pops Healy, DCA USS Lexington.

And more

My photo skills are quite average at best...but I was up against it today - my 300mm lens wouldn't auto-focus half the time, so I spent most of the day in manual focus with varying degrees of success. It's safe to say I won't be winning any Photographer of the Year awards - but I have enough half decent ones for my collection.

I'm not saying any of this for likes - it's just how it is
