Title: Cruel Seas
Post by: Silent Disapproval Robot on September 15, 2019, 12:51:50 AM
I hosted a game of Cruel Seas at a local 2-day gaming con today.  Very good turnout!  I ended up giving up my seat and just basically refereed after controlling a Brit air strike on turn one.

Nice looking table. It's a cool looking game for sure.

That is cool. I'm impressed by those wake markers behind the ships. I'm guess they are used to show speed and maybe other info?

Yes, they show speed.  They also have markings to indicate turn radii but they don't work very well.  Small boats crossing a wake have to make piloting checks to see if the boat gets thrown off course and takes damage from swamping.  The game comes with nation-specific dice that you are supposed to put into a draw bag, one per unit controlled.  You draw out a die and the corresponding side selects one of their units to activate.  We've found that it's very easy to cheat and select one side or the other as you can feel the difference between the dice as the 6 on each die has been replaced with a national symbol.  (USMC globe and anchor on US dice, Commandos anchor and eagle on Brits, rising sun and rays on Japanese, iron cross on Germans, hammer and sickle on Soviets, fasces on Italians.)  As such, I ordered some nation specific metal buttons from a guy on Etsy and use those instead.  We place the button on the wake marker of the just-activated ship to indicate which boats have already gone each turn.

I'm really interested in this!

The starter pack is £50, which is not bad at all, especially since I have a Birthday not far off.

Not sure if there's any games on those small boats, but Compass Games is doing one on the PT boats in the south Pacific:

Yes, I did look at that. (Devil Boats), I don't think its a topic that is well covered by map-and-counter games; at least, I can't recall seeing any.

It does seem to be a popular area for mini's though, and I think with 'Cruel Sea's' in particular, the ship models themselves have a lot of appeal.

Cruel Seas is fun but, as mentioned previously, the rules have errors, omissions, and cases that are counter-factual and illogical.

You might want to have a look at the Narrow Seas rule system.  It’s $12.99 for PDFs.  It aims to correct a lot of the shortcomings in Cruel Seas.  I am working in a hybrid of the two because I find all the rolling for component damage in Narrow Seas a bit tedious.

Also, War Thunder Naval is a lot of fun and free to play.  The first 3 tiers are all small craft (Vospers, Fairmiles, Elcos Higgins, E-boats, etc.  Zipping around between rocks and shoals and blasting other boats with MGs and cannons is tonnes of fun.  Once destroyers start showing up, it kinda sucks though.

I have been watching some of that on youtube. I was surprised by the level of detail on the boats, especially my favourite, the class 'D' MGB

Thanks.  Been slowly working at painting up everything in my collection.  I've finished my Brits (19 minis), Germans (18 mini), and Americans (11 minis) as well as a couple of neutral cargo ships and terrain.  I've got 11 of the 22 Japanese ships painted and then I'll start on the Italians (11 minis).

Not sure what the shipping costs from Florida would be, but the prices at NWS Store are hard to beat.  Unfortunately, he's not exactly speedy when it comes to shipping.  Took me 3 months to get my order from him.  ~£37 right now.

Yeah, £37 is cheap. Amazon also have it a little bit cheaper at £46. Warlords are typical of ex GW  people outfits, like Flames of War, the range and quality cannot be faulted, but the prices ain't cheap.

My poor wallet will testify to to warlords prices although not as bad as Rubicon models - a recent truck mounted flakvierling purchase was 29 from warlord but would have been 45 from Rubicon although their models are the best around
