Poised and ready.

Attack the Farmhouse
Orders are out 1 team from Able, 1 team from Baker and 2 teams from Charlie - 12 troops in all - are to oust the Germans from their Farmhouse over the course of 12 turns.

It's pretty well defended with up to 26 German soldiers dug in.

I say up to 26 German soldiers because of course when selecting the German soldiers, they are drawn from a cup - and that cup contains 5 dummy counters for each German Team (of which there are 4 - White, Blue, Red and Yellow) - so there are 20 dummy counters in the cup along with 35 actual German soldiers.

It's a cracking variable system. I could effectively have 26 soldiers or 6 soldiers and 20 dummy counters.

Cool but you still need all the tables and rules.

You can get all that when you buy the game  :D

My copy of Stellar Horizons arrived yesterday.  I set it up to try to learn the rules in prep for a scheduled 3-player game this weekend.  This thing eats up a lot of table space!  Looks like it could be interesting.  I've played a number of Compass Games before but never owned one.  I'm finding the way they've organized the rule-book to be less than optimal.  The general rules seem to be pretty straightforward but there are quite a number of little modifiers and exceptions for just about every rule and they are spread out all over the place with many just being mentioned almost in passing in the middle of a paragraph.  The lack of an index doesn't help.

Campaign game starting layout.

Policy tree.  You can change your nation's policy once per decade (game turns=1 year)

Tech tree.  The North Americans have quite a head-start with the Russians close behind.  The Chinese have a few starting techs and everyone else starts at zero.

North America play board.

Russia play board

Japan play board

Close up of one of the planetary systems. (Mars).  The Russians start with an unmanned research vessel in orbit and the North Americans have a manned mission one year out.

Holy crap.  This looks like it could rival Twilight Imperium in complexity.

I am both titillated and terrified by the notion.

I'm not sure it's even close.  TI is legendary for a reason

That's pretty impressive. Looks like SpaceCorps (GMT) but on steroids.

I think they were shooting for something a little closer to High Frontier

Not familiar with that, but might look into them. However I'm quite happy with SC to be honest. Plus, it has an expansion (Ventures) hopefully coming out this year.

Honestly, it doesn’t seem very complex at all.  Nothing like High Frontiers.  If the game had come with some charts listing the DRMs and gameplay steps, it’d be quite easy to follow.
