OK, I jumped on the Kickstarter at the regular box level.  I couldn't justify an extra $25 or so for the metal box, no matter how cool it is.

I seriously considered adding on the Forbidden Lands set, too, but I have a feeling I'll get a copy before that one would ship.  Coriolus almost hooked me, too....

I filled out my pledge manager yesterday.  Added the dice tray b/c it was kinda cool, but couldn't spring for the set of custom dice, that were just crazy expensive.

Is this like Dungeons and Dragons but in WWII

I mean from the RPG/playing perspective where you have someone narrate the story and players play out their characters?

It's an RPG, yes.

It's set in World War 3, though. The original version that came out in the 80s espoused a NATO-Warsaw Pact war that resulted in a nuclear exchange. The PCs are soldiers stuck in Europe, trying to survive.

There was a later version done around '92 that incorporated the fall of the Soviet Union.

I had both of those and they were great reading. We played the original quite a bit back in the 80s, my ROTC buddies and I.

I almost went for this version too, though I'd never play it. I usually just like reading about the world-building. I'd also like to hear about the system here and how it's improved over the last few iterations.

post-WW3

world broke down after a world war, and US forces stuck in a crumbling continental Europe trying to get home while everyone else is just trying to survive

Totally new system, built on the Mutant Year Zero / Forbidden Lands system

Watched a guy play a few sessions using Fantasy Grounds using a ruleset he built (not alot of automation at the time). The base system (the Year Zero Engine) it didn't hold my attention as much as I thought it would (it certainly uses a lot less dice than the original). Guess I'm getting older and stuck in my ways that has something to do with it. Starting to prefer very few systems these days. Glad to see what feedback others have.

Here is the session he explains how the ruleset works in Fantasy Grounds.
