I hate to say this ... but I will not be attending ORIGINS in 2021.
-
I'm curious if there is even going to be one!
-
I'm really starting to doubt it. Even if there is I'm not sure I'd want to take the risk.
-
depending on the speed with which the vaccines could get out, it might be one of those "show your vaccine card for entry" sort of things
honestly, I expect this year to be virtual
-
I'm gonna let you guinea pigs test that vaccine for me for six to twelve months or so first.

There is an announcement coming in early January about what's going to happen with Origins this year. I would suspect that the announcement is foreshadowing a change of date.
They will probably try to hold something in late fall to let the vaccine get around before bringing people into proximity.
at this point though, it seems certain that Origins is not expected to happen on the weekend for which it was originally scheduled
What this could mean for us though is that we take that weekend to hold our summer virtual convention and start planning now for an ACDC in June
-
New Dates just announced today
NEW DATES:
SEPTEMBER 30 - OCTOBER 3, 2021
Based on the hopeful news that COVID-19 vaccines are being distributed and reports from the CDC that community events and conventions should be able to resume later this year, we have made the decision to move this year’s Origins Game Fair from our usual June weekend to September 30 – October 3, 2021.
Safety is our primary concern, and we believe holding Origins later in the year provides the best path forward to have an in-person event this year.
We are working with other game convention organizers to develop guidelines for safe events, including, but not limited to:
Requiring Face Masks
Social Distancing
Temperature Checks
Hand Sanitizing Stations
In the interim, we encourage everyone to help fight the pandemic by wearing a mask, practicing social distancing, washing your hands, and getting the vaccine when you are able. Together we can work towards returning back to normal.
We are monitoring the COVID-19 situation and will provide updates as we get closer to the event. Exhibitor and sponsorship information will be available on February 16. If you have any questions, please email registration@gama.org.
IMPORTANT DATES
📅 February 16 - Sponsor/Exhibitor Information Sent
📅 June 1 - Hotel Block Opens
📅 June 5 - Badge Sales Open
📅 June 8 - Call for Volunteers
📅 September 30 - October 3 - Origins Game Fair
Please note, all dates are subject to change.
FAQ + FAST FACTS
✅ Registration - Attendee safety is our highest priority. Once registration opens on June 5, we highly encourage you to pre-register electronically to reduce the amount of in-person waiting time at the event.
✅ Hotel Reservations - We are not using OnPeak this year. Attendees will be responsible for directly booking with the hotel once registration opens on June 1.
✅ Hybrid Event - This year's event will include a mix of physical programming (key programming will be streamed) and exclusive online content.
✅ Event Submission Info - Details coming soon.

I hope this happens, but I won't be there if it does. I honestly do not know that we're going to be at a convention stage of life again this year. I hope we are, but I'm not counting on it by any means. And if we do end up there, they've completely overlapped my local convention, CinCityCon. Should conventions happen, I'll be going to it.
-
Our involvement is still up in the air. Even if we committed to being there, I don't know how many of the team could/would actually make it.
We might just stick to online conventioning for now, with the Summer ACDC coming up on the original Origins weekend 18-20 June
-
At this point, I can't imagine I would be able to be there. The Summer ACDC? It's rumored that My Own Worst Enemy will be there in some form. 8)

I should look into the virtual cons more. Once life here (which has been less than stellar the past couple months for a plethora of reasons) gets back to normal, I'll explore it more. If only to hear other people. Doing the podcast with you guys was a nice because I got to talk with you guys almost in person for the first time in ages.

Ok so I might have had that one coming ..... ::)

That late date is a no-go for the OTS team. Too close to our hopeful Southern Storm roll out. Plus Covid will still be a thing. Here's hoping for a live show in 2022. :bigthumb:

Origins held a live-stream last night to provide some updated info
For those that couldn't join here is some info I captured from the live stream:
Just got done watching the live stream. Really informative. Thank You origins team!
❗Masks will be required. No plans to change this
❗Currently nothing officially asking people of they are vacinated. A bit of a gray area for asking people this for business so currently not being required to be asked.
❗Show will open at noon Thursday run till Sunday afternoon.
❗Origins will have a lot less space than previous years. This means less events can physically be ran.
❗There have been some adjustments made to GM & Volunteer requirements for badge & perk compensation. This is a result for losing a day.
❗Event organizers and GMs registered for the news letter will be getting an email tomorrow with information around specific dates for submissions and layouts. As well as GM perk adjustment. Including 2 new badge options for GMs!
❗No onsite Badge Sales. All badges must be purchased ahead of show and online.
❗Some dates mentioned on the stream:
June 1: Hotel block opens
June 4- July 28: Event Submission window
June 8: Call for volunteers
June 26: Badge Sales open
Sept. 11: Event Registration opens

The current plan for wargaming at Origins is as follows
- Tank Duel by GMT
- Age of Dogfights by Forsage
- Commands & Colors: Napoleonics by GMT
- Tank on Tank by Lock ‘n Load Publishing
- Second World War at Sea by Avalanche Press
- A Distant Plain by GMT (as a Team COIN game)
-
Man, I'd love to do 2nd World War at Sea and Age of Dogfights. Can't see them easing up on travel restrictions up here any time soon tough.

Yeah, attendance is going to be rough this year even before factoring in international restrictions
Maybe next year?
-
Wish I'd be there this year, but on top of all the standard questions/issues, Origins moved to the same weekend as my local con. I'll miss all of you, but I already paid for CinCityCon and it comes with the added bonus of not requiring a hotel for the weekend.
Hope to see you all next year, though! It's been too long!

There's a few folks knocking around here that if they said they would be at Origins, I would do my best to be there, too. Did it for Martok. Did it for mirth. SDR is on that list, too. I honestly don't think we have a gaming thing in common, but, anyone who has the sense of humor to use a handful of crows in his sig line and call it, "Attempted Murder," is my kind of messed up ;)
-
Yeah, I'm sad I missed the Martok Origins.
-
I'm likewise bummed I missed the bbmike and mirth Origins. Would love to see the rest of the guys again as well. (I was originally hoping I could go this year, but there's simply been too much up in the air, both generally and specifically for myself.)
I *am* returning at some point, however, and the sooner the better. I've promised myself that.

2021 maps, schedules, etc

Preview for this week!
https://www.armchairdragoons.com/events/cons/o2021preview/
This preview includes some map info, booth locations for companies we typically deal with, and event grids for our Armchair Dragoons events, plus extracts from the 'big' event list for everything that was labeled "wargame" and another for "historical"
Note that those categories are applied by the person submitting the event, so there are things in the "historical" category that most wargamers would never get anywhere near. But there are also things in the "historical" category that are not marked as "wargame" even though they definitely are.

I thought the Exhibit hall was going to be smaller due to COVID. ???
It is. The gaming Hall we were in last year is cut in half. The front half is the gaming hall and the back half is the exhibit hall

You didn't know about Blitzkrieg?
Martin (the other half of Solosaurus) has it and sings its praises, but it was sold out in a lot of places. I finally have a copy coming on Monday; this one also has the Nippon expansion, wherein you can battle Godzilla.

I think I had heard of it and we might have even mentioned it in one of the Tuesday newsday articles, but I had never seen it.
I watched the guy teaching the game for a few minutes which is where I got the pictures of the game in progress
-
It's super light but that's its gimmick - you can play it in a brief time.
My copy unexpectedly just arrived. I might do a quick unboxing.
-
While watching it, you tell how 'light' it was. Seems to really be a multi-track conflict game w/ WW2 theme pasted on.
You could reskin it as Greek city states or War of the Roses or 7 Years War or warlord-era Japan and it'd still work.
-
Pretty much, yeah.
The Nippon variant is on the other side of the board. That's where Godzilla attacks the US, I think. Very historically accurate! ;D
-
Glad at least some of you were able to get together for Origins! Here's hoping next year will be back to normal and I'll be able to make it!
My local convention, CinCityCon, was lighter attendance than in the past. But given Covid, GenCon two weeks ago, and overlapping with Origins an hour north... That was kind of expected. Not much in the way of war gaming, but did get to play a few new (to me) games over the weekend. Furnace stood out as a good, quick little auction/engine builder. Dune Imperium was a good deck builder/worker placement. Raiders of the North Sea was a good worker placement for those who don't want to deal with deck building. Unsettled was fun, but a bit pricier than I'd be willing to pay. Star Wars Outer Rim was fun, but a bit slow. And I got to teach three new folks SpaceCorp, which has been one of my favorite games over the past two years.
So I definitely missed all of you (I seriously didn't win a single free game, it felt so dirty and wrong!), but I still had a great time. It was just so nice to be with people again!
-
Glad you had a good time with the local con!
There'll be more coverage coming this week for Origins.
-
Seeing those pics, even of a greatly reduced GenCon, makes me realize how much I miss it. Hopefully I'll be able to go in a year or so.
-
Seeing those pics, even of a greatly reduced GenCon
curious where you saw the pics of GenCon?

Origins.
Convention.
Whatever. :silly:

What was the western miniatures game? The cards did not look like ones used in Dead Man's Hand.
-
I'd have to go back and look. It's one of those ones that could be either straight western, or Weird West / supernatural

Wrapping up Origins 2021
https://www.armchairdragoons.com/events/cons/origins2021-wrapping-up-the-convention/
-
for anyone interested, Origins released attendance info
on FaceBook
in a reply to someone else's post
no, I'm not making that up
(https://i1.wp.com/www.armchairdragoons.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/Origins2021-Numbers.png)
I would draw -ZERO- conclusions from these numbers given the combination of (1) plague, and (2) October.
We've got some great plans for the wargaming space next year, so y'all come join us!
-
Maybe they'd had no intention of volunteering the attendance numbers (despite the fact the fact that -- as you pointed out -- they're actually pretty decent, given the overall situation), and only did so when directly asked? I dunno.
