Post by: Martok on June 08, 2023, 06:02:49 PM
Pardon my Klingon, but holy fucking shit:

https://www.paradoxinteractive.com/our-games/paradox-arc/star-trek-infinite

Published by Paradox.  Developed by the same guys as Master of Orion: Conquer the Stars (which I enjoyed, despite its flaws).

Full reveal coming June 16, Picard Day.  It's gonna be a long week...

But the trailer didn't really give much game information. :(
Hoping for something BotF-ish but expecting it will probably be Jar-Jar-ish.

4 races... where one is the Cardassians... ok.... with maybe the Borg fighting everyone....

Will need a lot more info before I get excited.  :nope:

Holly Molly,

I guess the success of Picard and the new Star Trek shows was a huge help for this to happen.

Best news since Master of Orion CtS!

Yep, it's going to be a long week

I suspect a game based on the Stellaris engine. More races will probably come with Dlcs (my guess). Just hope they don't use the starlanes.

The problem with Master of Orion: CtS is that the support stopped so fast. I this game does well, we may have the same type of support Stellaris has got, which is great.

Definitely one to keep on my long range sensors. BotF has never enjoyed a worthy successor imho so fingers crossed....errrr, figuratively at least.

Some more info:

Quote
Star Trek: Infinite puts players in command of one of four major powers in the galaxy, each with individualized traits, stories, quests, and more to make their play feel distinct. With stunning visuals, difficult choices, and unique gameplay, this game allows players to experience a beloved franchise in a new way as they navigate contact with other empires and worlds.

Nice find, Anguille

Yes, of course we all want more than just the four playable factions.  But if they're individualized enough (as the blurb implies), that would balance things out somewhat.  And we all know there will be DLC adding more factions if the game is successful enough.

I realize there are still plenty of reasons to be skeptical, but there are also good reasons to be hopeful as well.  For now, at least, I choose the latter.  :dreamer:

So...this sort of sounds like it's a Birth of the Federation remake.

Oh, that's not at all a complaint or disdaining observation. I'm in!

Yeah, BOTF players have been coming out of the woodwork since Infinite was announced.  Sounds like we're all ready for a sequel!

I have been critical with Paradox approach (Dlcs) in the past but i am happy that they are behind this game as it means that the support could be long and good.

There's a leaked screenshot (of a beta version) which looks to be the starting point. It's really very much based on Stellaris. And there are minor races (among them the Bajor). Looking good enough for me. Based on the screenshot, i would guess that we are dealing with a scenario for the first game (with a strong storyline and tasks like in Stellaris). Bajor is correctly placed between the Federation and the Cardassians. The neutral zone is clear to be seen between the Federation and the Romulans as well. Pretty sure we'll have a wormhole near Bajor. Probably also an option to have a free map. I could imagine that the dlcs can be linked to special periods of the Star Trek universe.
The map is also huge so there's plenty of room for many other races and stories already in that first scenario (Borg, Dominion etc.)

Wow! That does look like a reskinned Stellaris. I wonder if they took over the Star Trek Mod for Stellaris and ran with it to make a new game....

Gotta admit I'm more interested now.  :bigthumb:

I second Barthheart.  If this really is a leaked screenshot of an earlier version of the game (nice find, by the way!), then I'm definitely feeling more optimistic about it.    :bigthumb:

I'm enthused. A re-skinned Stellaris isn't the worst idea, considering how many mega-hours of work and development have gone into Stellaris already.

Yeah, we will know more soon! only 3 day more!

I have kept the link under spoiler as i suspect that this is a huge leak to have this screenshot from a game of Paradox. So please keep it just here (don't want to risk anyone losing it's job).

Yep based on Stellaris. Which is a good things as that is a great game.

Man, PDox must have deep pockets to get this license and license to use those likenesses.  :o

Incidentally, here's a trailer showing snippets of gameplay:

The game's Stellaris "ancestry" is obvious, as is its Hearts of Iron heritage (notice the mission trees).  I'm most intrigued...

Coming out on the 13th of october

Where did you see it was coming out October 13?  (Not that I'm complaining if it's releasing that soon, just curious.)

Yep based on Stellaris. Which is a good things as that is a great game.

Yeah, I do have to wonder how much it cost Paradox to get their hands on the Star Trek license.  It couldn't have been cheap, though perhaps with Trek games usually doing so poorly, CBS recognized they couldn't be too greedy in how much they charged for it(?).  I dunno.

I'm also curious as to which parts of the license Paradox and Nimble Giant got their hands on:  With Birth of the Federation, the developers were strictly limited to ships that appeared in TNG episodes and the TNG films.  It appears that with Infinite, they have access to the full roster of ships and races in the TNG/DS9/VOY era, which is an improvement.

I really wish ST:I could have started in the TOS era.  However, I'm guessing that would have required a completely separate license, and that it would have been cost-prohibitive to purchase two of them for just one game.

So the dream for a proper sequel to Birth of the Federation continues.  :(
This is the closest we will get

Precisely.

And to be honest, this is personally just about all I could've hoped for.  Birth of the Federation was my all-time favorite game, until Stellaris came along.  For the two to essentially be combined is pretty much my dream come true.  :notworthy:

The date was mentionned on the game page of Paradox but i don't see it anymore.

Actually, i would have preferred if they had used the engine for Master of Orion CtS (with a separate battle engine). Would have allowed for more epic battles. And the map is prettier. Also the spying system (which wasn't perfect) is easier to manage. Anyway, it's the way it is. But i won't complain, it's more than i had hoped for.   :)

This is my one great disappointment. My dream game would take the early days of the Federation (or Empire) with tech and ship progression through TOS onward. I'll simply never love "Fat Enterprise" the way I love NCC-1701 no freakin' A, B, C or D   8)

I would imagine someone, somewhere, will mod it to reflect a progression from TOS (or even Enterprise) onward.

I know Birth of the Federation did that - I think the mod is called All the Ages. It's pretty awesome starting with the NX-01 and progressing through ships to the 1701-D, in general.
Title: Re: Star Trek: Infinite

That would be a home run. And you're probably right....I can definitely see a mod to make that happen   :bigthumb:

Ultimate Mod 5 did something similar for BOTF, where you started out with Oberth, Miranda, Constitution-class, etc.  UM5 also added several TOS minor races to the game.

In any case, I'm certain a TOS mod will be one of the first major mods we see become available for Star Trek: Infinite once it's released.  :)

About  4 hours in so far. It has a good tutorial, especially if you have never played Stellaris before.
Seems a bit slower paced than Stellaris, which is fine for me, gives a bit to get into the story.
Lots of Star Treky stuff in it.  :bigthumb:
Very Stellaris like but some differences too. Missing some of the current Stellaris quality of life stuff but not all, it has auto survey for science ship for example.
Still need a lot more game play for a full review but, for me, it’s fun. It will be interesting to see where they go with it.

BBMike will hate it because it’s not TOS.  ;)

I'd prefer TOS, but I can take TNG if it's done right. Any Jar Jar, however, and I'm outta here!  ;D
Title: Re: Star Trek: Infinite
Post by: Steelie on October 13, 2023, 02:06:36 PM
Frankly, if the game had started in TOS timeline (or even before) with tech progression towards TNG, I would have bought it day one. As it is however, I'm sure I will end up grabbing it on a deep discount down the road but there is no urgency for me otherwise.
