Think there were some tests like this on late Roman shields. They were handier than the classic legionary shield.

I believe the theory is that the round shields were supposed to be easier to lift, and sometimes used as a weapon ("bashing" against your opponent).

Yeah, the 'semi-barrel' shields were for shield walls and roofs so the legionaries could short-sword-stab Gauls in their naughty bits if they got too close.
