For those of us who are into the series, I imagine we've already watched it, but just for good measure :D :
-
Definitely psyched for this one!
I've been looking forward to Kislev for a while now (they've pretty much been considered a shoe-in for one of the factions). Can't wait to see what their roster can do; bring on the Bear Cavalry!
Grand Cathay is definitely a pleasant surprise, though a sensible choice when one considers it. Just 1 "good" empire to fight off all the Chaos powers would have been terribly lop-sided, whereas 2 is much better balanced. And from what admittedly little I know of the lore, Cathay was the most obvious choice for that 2nd empire. I just hope they have dragons on their roster. 8)
-
Both of those factions make this installment of the series the most interesting to me.
-
I had a feeling that if any one faction (aside from the Dwarfs) was going to pique your interest,
Russia Kislev would be it. ;)
I'm very curious to see what Cathay will look like in the game, and how they play. I'm especially interested to see how CA differentiates them from the various factions in Three Kingdoms (since Cathay is obviously based on China, at least loosely).
-
Cathay also interests me greatly...even though I have not played Three Kingdoms yet. I'm going out on a limb and guessing that Cathay will be quite reminiscent of Three Kingdoms' factions.
Quite.
-
Do we know what they’ve done engine wise otherwise this is just dlc add ons?
-
So I guess I should just wait for this to jump into the series?
-
The first two games never really grabbed me. I've played a bunch of both but never came away feeling really satisfied as a WH noob. These two new factions grab me though.

I'm definitely a WH noob as well but I've heard good things about WHII and wonder if I should play that first or just hold out for the new version.

Nothing specific that I'm aware of. CA obviously knows they're going to have to a much better job of optimization this time around, especially after they proved with 3K and Troy that they could do a decent job of it (not to mention the expanded Mortal Empires campaign will badly need all the help it can get in that regard). And according to this article (https://www.pcgamer.com/total-war-warhammer-3-is-going-to-be-absolutely-massive/?region-switch=1612505917), it sounds like Warhammer 3's campaign map alone will be around twice the size of WH2's. :o

The answer to that is going to depend on a number of factors. The short, oversimplified version, however, is that yes, you probably want to wait for WH3 at this point.
As enjoyable as Warhammer 2 is, it also suffers from a number of issues, including crappy siege battles and absurdly long loading times (due to poor optimization) -- issues that WH3 is expected to address. When you add in that Warhammer 3 is also going to have more playable factions at the start (6 instead of the usual 4), more features and interesting mechanics, a *much* larger campaign map, and-who-knows-what-else, at this point it makes more to sense to just wait.
The caveat to all this is the Mortal Empires campaign: If you only own Warhammer 3, you'll need to go and purchase both WH1 & WH2 to have access to it.
-
I don't think I ever played a siege in either WH1 or WH2 because of the bad rap they get.
And I love me some fantasy/medieval/Renaissance PC gaming sieges. I feel like we all missed out on that.
-
Enemy gathers on walls
Player fires artillery at walls to make a gap
Rush the gap
Head to the market square
To be fair I’m not sure how else they can represent it
-
Clearly they don’t know either. They just felt more dynamic and exciting circa Medieval 2.
-
Was always a fan of sappers in Rome tw

You're smarter than me, then. I've fought a number of siege battles, albeit no more than I can help.
It's not so much that they're bad per se, as that they're pointless: Why bother having these battle maps with beautiful, grand cities if we can't fight in them (other than just the outer section of only one side)? Grr.
And I love me some fantasy/medieval/Renaissance PC gaming sieges. I feel like we all missed out on that.
Aye, we certainly did. :(
Clearly they don’t know either. They just felt more dynamic and exciting circa Medieval 2.
I hope we see siege battles more like how they are in Thrones of Britannia and Troy. Despite the flak both those games get, sieges are one feature that are done quite well.
-
^Tell me more about the sieges in Thrones of Britannia...I hope to be playing it for the first time soon.
-
I tried to love Thrones of Brittannia...it was the right era and the right location for my interest - but my god was that game brutal.
I shelved it in the end with nightmares of playing it keeping me from going back. Marauding Vikings running about with huge armies when I had some tiny little itty bitty fighting unit. Also my other "local" factions had huge armies.
The AI was truly brutal. It just wouldn't leave me alone.
-
^Tell me more about the sieges in Thrones of Britannia...I hope to be playing it for the first time soon.
I hope you do as well. :) I still really like Thrones, despite its quirks & flaws, and it's been nice to see the game's reputation regain some ground these last couple years.
Regarding the game's siege battles, I could probably spend a few paragraphs waxing rhapsodically about why I think they're good, but it really comes down to two main factors...
1.) The siege maps are fantastic: They're not only big and look great (even on my potato of a computer), but they pretty much all boast a variety of terrain as well. This makes for some interesting tactical choices, both for the attacker and defender.
2.) The AI is actually somewhat decent: It's not brilliant, obviously, and I find it's generally a bit more competent at assaulting settlements than defending them, but either way I find it does a better job of handling siege battles than just about any other TW game I've played.
-

There are times I would almost swear that two different versions of ToB were sold: It seems like everyone's experience with the campaign AI is that it was insanely aggressive, or a bit too passive. ???
Out of curiosity, which faction(s) did you play as? (I'm guessing either Circenn or Strat Clut?)
-
Circen
-
Thanks JD and Martok. Looking forward to playing ToB. Not sure which faction I will take...they all interest me. And maybe I will lower the difficulty, going by what JD said. Will also make it a point not to auto resolve sieges 😎

Honestly - and don't quote me - but I think I started on the easiest setting because I generally have hard time with games like this.
-
Well it's no secret that faction choice in Total War games tends to play a significant role in what kind of experience you have, and that can obviously include how the AI-controlled factions interact with you. I've not really played as Circenn myself (most of my time thus far has been spent with Mide or Gwined), so they might very well have a harder time than other factions do.
Will also make it a point not to auto resolve sieges 😎
:bigthumb:
-
I remember I wanted to play as one of the Welsh and Scottish factions but both were rated 'Hard' or 'Very Hard' so it scared me away.
-
Gus, I replied to your post in a new thread (I didn't want to further derail this one):

See you there! 8)

Looks like a new trailer is coming next week, along with (more importantly) video of gameplay footage.
-
I’m looking forward to it but I don’t feel I’ve finished with 2 yet
-
I’m looking forward to it but I don’t feel I’ve finished with 2 yet
Same. Hell, I haven't played even half the races yet, including some of the ones I purchased as DLC [*cough* Tomb Kings *cough*].
I'm starting to think this might be a "I'm definitely getting this game, just not on release day" purchase. (Now watch me go pre-order it a month later like a dumbass...)
-
I already pre-ordered :)
-
It’ll prob be first day but I prob won’t play it until I feel I’ve got my money’s worth out of 2 - to be fair I could do another year on two
-
I have been trying to change my PC gaming harlot ways forever, and have made some real progress in the last five years. Every now and then a pre-order still sneaks its way through :/
-
I'll eventually get WHIII but I still have to first finish a WHII campaign and I really want to play another Shogun 2 campaign.
-
I think it's also easier for me to say I'm holding back (at least for now) since I still have my current POS computer. I'm not blind to the possibility that I may change my tune once I get a new machine. ::)

I think you can be forgiven this one. Your gaming habits and love for Total War in particular are quite thoroughly established at this point. ;)

Yeah, I'd like to get more time in with both WH2 and (especially) Three Kingdoms. The latter seems like I'd enjoy the hell out of it, but I want to be able to enjoy it on a PC that actually runs it well.
-
*whispers*
Don't forget the newly released Rome: Total War Remastered, which has really made me re-addicted. It recaptured the magic for me. Playing a Scipii campaign now.
*whispers*
-
Trust me, I didn't even have to ask where you've been this past week; I already knew. The only thing that surprises me is that you stopped playing it long enough to even post here (although I suppose at least a few hours also has to be given over to sleeping and eating). ;D
-
^About to play again for a time too. It's still got that magic. Like an old girlfriend.
-
Kislev
-
oo-er!
-
After watching teasers like this one, I'd rather have an animated series than a game. :D
-
After watching teasers like this one, I'd rather have an animated series than a game. :D
The way things have been going with the franchise, I wouldn't be entirely surprised if you got your wish. :P
-
Whoo boy, the info is coming fast and thick now!
-
Nice Kislev trailer. Definitely makes me want to play as them.
-
Haven’t watched the above video yet but I know that I will be playing Kislev first. Then Cathay.
-

Same.
I have to admit, though, that the Chaos factions don't interest me at all -- not playing as them, nor playing against them. An expanded Mortal Empires campaign is currently the only reason I have to get this game, impressive as it looks.
...But when the expanded ME campaign *does* drop, I'll definitely be playing as Kislev. 8)
-
Fortunately for my wallet, I have an on-going Shogun 2 campaign and then I need to play WH2 and ToB campaigns.
-
Probably about as close to "normal" units as we'll see in this game. :D

Don't forget about Wrath of Sparta! (I'm honestly curious what your take on that will be.) :P

OK that trailer is awesome!
-
Yeah, it is pretty good.

Kislev's version of chariots?

A short article on Kislev's other legendary lord: Kostaltyn - Supreme Patriarch of the Cult of Ursun, and the leader of the Grand Orthodoxy.

He kinda comes across as a more feral version of Volkmar. Sounds fun.
-
For all that the Chaos factions don't appear that they'll be my personal cup of tea, I could still see myself taking this guy out for a spin on occasion. He looks kinda fun.
-
Kislev's full faction roster:
https://www.totalwar.com/blog/total-war-warhammer-3-kislev-roster-reveal/
Looks awesome; I love that most units have 2 variants, allowing for greater tactical flexibility. I foresee Kislev overtaking the Empire as everyone's favorite human faction.
Also: Bears are way cool.
-
That roster is great, but I bet the Cathay roster will just be something else!
-
Khorne roster is now up. Blood: so much blood...

CA discusses changes & additions to battles in Warhammer 3:
https://www.totalwar.com/blog/total-war-warhammer-3-survival-battles-battle-changes/
I'll readily concede it's weird, but what probably excites me most are the changes & improvements to auto-resolve. The bit about telling you in advance which units will likely be lost should be a major QoL improvement.
I also noticed that any & all discussion of siege battles are conspicuously absent. I hope that just means it's because CA is saving some of the good stuff for later, but I do worry.
-
Changes to auto-resolve! Interesting.
-
^ Right?!
Looking at the forums and Reddit, I guess quite a lot of folks are jazzed about the improved auto-resolve. It's notoriously bad in Warhammer II (possibly the worst in the entire series), so any improvement is welcome. Only the most hardcore and/or masochistic players choose to fight every battle, after all, so a better auto-resolve -- or at least a more predictable one -- is certainly something to look forward to.
-
I used to at least attempt to play out almost all TW battles years ago but I just don’t have that kind of stamina anymore. Except in Shogun 2...those battles are epicly fun and beautiful and every one is worth playing.
-
I hope your better half isn’t disappointed by your lack of stamina. 🥸
-
Other way round for me - the ability to watch a live battlefield full of all the lead figures from my youth is awesome - guaranteed wins like 3000 v 500 I’ll auto but the rest is a dream for me
-
My better half would auto resolve everything if I was down for it.
-
Well it turns out I called it (though it's probably not for the reasons I enumerated at the time): Warhammer III has officially been delayed until next year.
https://www.pcgamer.com/total-war-warhammer-3-delayed-into-2022/
Reaction among the community appears to be surprisingly even overall. There's obviously still folks who are upset, but generally speaking, there doesn't seem to be a lot of calls going out for the gathering of torches & pitchforks, the marching on CA/Sega headquarters, etc. I wonder if quite a few folks weren't expecting/anticipating a delay.
Cody Bonds has an interesting debate with a puppet (yes, really) regarding the pros & cons of the delay, and the possible reasons behind it...
-
I for one am quite pleased - I’m not ready for 3 yet - there’s so much left of 2 to work thru
-
Haha what's with the puppet...

Dear lord - that’s a great trailer - a million miles away from a few units of Bretonnian farmers and some archer!

That trailer made me question reality. As the most casual of casual WH fans, it is frustrating that Cathay are not in any WH books, yet.

Agreed! I think this is truly one of the greatest trailers CA has ever done, which is saying something.

I imagine that's because -- until now -- Grand Cathay has only ever been on the periphery of the Warhammer fantasy universe. They've basically been the equivalent of a background character, albeit one that's somewhat important/influential. However, I suspect that will begin to change, going forward.
-
I'll need a new PC to run that - I have enough trouble running II :(
-
You and me both, bud. It's yet another reason I'm not upset over the delay.
-
We get some lore & background on Grand Cathay. There's a fair bit to digest...

^Cool I’ll need to check that out when I am back in front of my rig.

Interesting side note for miniatures gamers is the on going development of Warhammer Old Worlds which is essentially a revival of Warhammer Fantasy. Also GW has released battle scrolls for WH Fantasy factions awhile back so they can be played in AoS. https://www.games-workshop.com/en-NO/Warhammer-Age-of-Sigmar-Rules

Yeah, it's the same thing on Reddit. There's a lot of impatient/angry folks who feel like CA is jerking them around with not revealing more significant material, and focusing only on the faction reveals so far.
Can't say I blame them either, to be honest. Bears & dragons are great and everything, but they're no substitute for getting to see the actual meat of the game.
Between CA's uncharacteristic bungling of info dumps and overall community engagement, combined with WH3's release being delayed until next year (never mind that I predicted that from the get-go), makes me increasingly concerned. The way things are looking right now, I fear the game's launch could be a shit-show the likes of which we've not seen since Rome II, or possibly even Empire. Hopefully I'm just being overly cynical/pessimistic, but I worry.

Nice! I've heard/read a lot about how the success of the Warhammer Total War series has revived an interest in the WH Fantasy tabletop games -- and/or made clear to GW how much general interest there still was in the latter -- but I hadn't realized they'd gone so far as to actually begin working on a new/improved version until. Very cool.

I’m inclined to agree with impending shit show - I suspect they haven’t fixed siege battles or don’t k ow what to replace it with and these are stalling tactics for either the ‘we’re doing it later’ or ‘not at all’ announcements
For me personally, like the original games, I could do without siege battles and just have the castle in the background maybe providing artillery support
-
But...I love siege battles. Granted I haven't played a TW siege since Medieval 2...but from the above posts it's starting to come back to me why.
-
Not going to 1000s but definitely 100s - all exactly the same for me, defence or attack
Only once after seeing a video did I switch defence to not even manning the walls and peppering the enemy with archers as they advanced up the single lane from the open gate - lost 4 I think to 1000s dead - sneaky and successful but not thing new
-
Haha...Total War sieges have always been a hilarious affair. I think it was Empire: Total War but I am sure they are all the same. The back and forth line dance up to the wall followed by a thousand poor souls scaling a couple ladder up to try and get to the top of the wall.
-
It's like they have cookies on my home PC or something...
-
Ermmm…..
-
Ears everywhere and they know how we all feel about TW sieges through the years. We're done for!
-
Heh 😈 meant the ‘new’ siege engine
-
Going out on a limb here to guess that you are not a fan...
-
Well, it maybe me but apart from traps it looks exactly like the rest
-
Not falling for the old banana in the tailpipe trick are you? I feel like we've been waiting for revamped siege mechanics for a decade. I did, however, really enjoy the sieges in Fall of the Samurai...probably the best TW sieges of all.
If you have any suggestions for newer games that do real time sieges well...I am always looking.
-
Yeah, I'm not impressed with the siege "rework" -- especially since they've not actually been reworked.
So major settlement battles are now going to entail an RTS mini-game, involving a gimmicky "supply" mechanic, and building structures while the combat is ongoing?? In addition , we're seeing the return of needing to hold "victory locations" (or whatever they're called now) from Rome II -- a feature that was thoroughly despised? No thank you.
I'll grant the new multi-levels allowing missile units to take a more prominent role is a positive step, but that's the only actual improvement I'm seeing so far.
I did, however, really enjoy the sieges in Fall of the Samurai...probably the best TW sieges of all.
I feel like Shogun 2 and Thrones of Britannia are the only TW games that have done siege battles any real justice.
-
I do kinda like the addition of those multi-level structures and bridges and such too.
I did not play out any sieges in ToB...I missed out?
-
I did not play out any sieges in ToB...I missed out?
Short answer, yes. Siege battles in Thrones can actually be pretty fun.
The maps for major settlements -- aside from looking great -- tend to offer some interesting tactical possibilities. In addition, the AI isn't a totally inept opponent (at least against a non-expert player like me), so I find them to be a fairly nice level of challenge as well.
-
I did not know this...more reason to get back to ToB soon-ish.
-
CA's latest blog looks at Grand Cathay's campaign mechanics:
https://www.totalwar.com/blog/total-war-warhammer-3-grand-cathay-campaign-mechanics/
Sounds interesting, if potentially tricky to manage. The Compass and Great Bastion mechanics seem cool. I'm a bit more skeptical about the Ivory Road caravans; I wonder if they'll really be worth the trouble.

Yeah, I tend to enjoy the sieges, at least when I don't have overwhelming force (I still usually auto-resolve in those instances). And if you're clearly going to be on the *losing* end of a siege -- especially as a defender -- it can be fun to see just how much damage you can do to the attacking army before you go down in flames. >:D
-
^I like how you think.
Those Cathay mechanics look splendid. I hope they are not too difficult to grasp.
-
For as much as the Chaos factions don't generally appeal to me, I will admit the campaign mechanics for Tzeentch (by way of his devoted adherent Kairos Fateweaver) seem pretty cool.
https://www.totalwar.com/blog/total-war-warhammer-3-tzeentch-campaign-mechanics/
-
I never thought I'd say this, but the campaign mechanics for Kislev actually look they might be as interesting as those for Grand Cathay. The focus on faith/religion is a slightly different take, as is the importance of the Atamans and the three Great cities of Kislev.

Blood for the blood god, skulls for the skull throne - Khorne's campaign mechanics:

I played a Chaos campaign about a month ago and while it was fun, all the demonology talk of blood and such kind of got to me after a while.
-
That’s just khorne this time around
-
It appears that pretty much the entire unit roster for Tzeentch consists of nightmares that I will never want to play with (much less against)...
https://www.totalwar.com/blog/total-war-warhammer-3-tzeentch-roster/
That’s just khorne this time around
yeah, all the references to blood and skulls was specifically to Khorne. The other three Chaos gods have quite different motifs (see Tzeentch above for an example).

New spells coming to WH3. Looks like a decent list:
https://www.totalwar.com/blog/total-war-warhammer-3-new-magic-lores-new-spells/
There's also this interesting tidbit at the end:
Those are the new lores coming to Total War: WARHAMMER III, though rumours abound of another source of power in the Cathayan borderlands.
A reference to the warpstone in the Warpstone Desert, perhaps? Or something else entirely?

Feb 17th it is then
Excited about the ogre kingdoms dlc - an army I really fancied when it was released for table top - tbf this army above all the rest has my loins tingling but I’m still in no rush to get the game yet
-
Yeah, the Ogre Kingdoms look like they could be the most fun out all the factions revealed so far. I'm really digging their campaign mechanics...
https://www.totalwar.com/blog/total-war-warhammer-3-ogre-kingdoms-campaign-mechanics/
That being said, I too am still in no hurry to get this when it releases in February. It is starting to look somewhat better, though I remain underwhelmed by the siege rework.
-
Apart from the new era and the new factions I’m not sure it looks too different from 2 to warrant any rush to buy - I’m either getting old or sensible but I can wait for this one
-
I pre-ordered back in July 🤣

Apart from the new era and the new factions I’m not sure it looks too different from 2 to warrant any rush to buy - I’m either getting old or sensible but I can wait for this one
For me, it's that, plus I'm already anticipating forking over $60.00 for Distant Worlds 2 (and even that thought makes me want to puke). No way in hell am I spending that amount of money on any other single game, no matter good they look.
I pre-ordered back in July 🤣
...Said Gus to the surprise of absolutely no one. ;D
-
Oh gus :silly:
-
To my credit it is the first pre-order I have done in quite some time. Mostly for Kislev and Cathay.
To my discredit I am not that big a fan of the Warhammer TW games in the first place.
🥸
-
^ It's okay, we understand. ;)
CA put out a video showing off combat between the forces of Tzeentch's Kairos Fateweaver and Grand Cathay's Zhao Ming, The Iron Dragon. It's interesting to note just how much greater a role that flying units are likely to play in WH3's battles.

These look like fun.

Personally, I think Scrag actually scares me more. He seems to be totally batshit insane, even by the usual Warhammer standards. :idiot2:

They look great - I think I’d have been more excited for W3 last year if this was the big race reveal first up
As martok says though there’s a big list of games ahead of this

A raft of new features and QoL improvements are coming to WH3's battles. It looks like a pretty nice list; wish we could get some of them added to Warhammer II...

The Ogres' army roster:
https://www.totalwar.com/blog/total-war-warhammer-3-ogre-kingdoms-roster-reveal/
I have admit, I love the unit descriptions. Someone clearly had fun writing these up... :hehe:
- Ironguts: Will drink you under the table, eat you out of house and home, beat you at arm-wrestling, then fall asleep embracing you. True friends.
- Maneaters: Spent enough time in foreign lands to … have particular tastes. Y’know, for food.
- Sabretusk Pack: NOT a cute lil’ kitty cat. Do NOT pet.
- Leadbelchers: What we did, you see, is take an Ogre, and then give him a massive gun – so once his ammo’s ran out, he’s still an Ogre. Smart, see?
- Mournfang Cavalry: If all dogs go to Heaven, we assume Mournfangs have their own, closed-off area.
- Crushers: Being crashed into by a Rhinox is somehow more painful than being crashed into by a Mournfang. Most who have experienced the latter wouldn’t agree that was possible.
This one has to be my favorite, though...
- Stonehorn (Harpoon Launcher): Ogres have the greatest respect for Stonehorns, for the mammoth creatures are everything an Ogre aspires to be: big, violent, strong and rock-hard.
- They put a Harpoon Launcher on a Stonehorn.
- They took a Stonehorn, already a humongous monster that can crush units beneath its hooves, and put a crossbow that fires spears on top of it.
- The Ogre who invented this is essentially as close to Einstein as they ever got.

This would have been my next fantasy battle project because you didn’t need 100s of figures - will look forward very much to unleashing these bad boys on the field

We finally get a look at the campaign map. Looks like they might have toned down the color riot a bit this time around, which is a good thing as far as I'm concerned.
(Incidentally, the narrator for the Warhammer videos has always bothered the shit out of me. I realize he's only doing as instructed/requested, but CA is trying to way too hard IMO.)

I'm not sure the Ogres should have won this battle, but it was admittedly fun to watch. I also may have to withdraw my earlier comments about this narrator; he was pretty amusing here. :hehe:

Update 1.1.0 has dropped:
https://www.totalwar.com/blog/tw-warhammer3-update110/
It'll be interesting to follow the game's long-term development, especially when juxtaposed against the fact that currently, WH3 has only a "Mixed" 60% review score on Steam. Granted that Steam reviews should probably (and tend to) be taken with a grain of salt, it's still somewhat notable that in contrast/comparison, both the first two Warhammer games scored much better at release.
-
^I'm downloading that thing right now...101.5 GB!
-
..101.5 GB!
:o
-
Heh. Yeah, that's yet another reason I haven't picked up the game: I don't have room for it!
The SSD on my new computer is wonderfully fast, but it's also only 500 GB. So I've had to be very choosy about which games to install. Even with that, the darn thing is still nearly full. :-[
-
^I want to become more discerning in what I install so I can purchase less.
BWAHAHA
-
Just get a smaller hard drive. You'll quickly discover just how discerning you really are. ;D
-
Well you all know me. I can barely spell dissccerning. Or whatever.
So this patch was NOT the one to update Mortal Empires...was it? I haven't read the notes.
-
Correct. The Immortal Empires campaign won't be available for (probably) months yet.
-
Oh well. I can wait.
-
Hopefully CA outlines in the roadmap when Immortal Empires is coming. But even the roadmap's drop isn't known at this point, other than sometime "after 1.1 is out" (so anytime between now and Labor Day ::) ).
-
I'm trying to figure out why CA is posting this *now*, as opposed to two months ago. Kind of a head-scratcher. ???
Also, still no roadmap. I really do wonder what's going on with their media & community-relations folks (and just their management overall) these days.
-
Haven’t looked at the numbers but I get the feeling this hasn’t been as spectacular as the first and second - whether that’s because like myself after patches there was nothing wrong that needed doing to 2 to warrant a new release yet or it’s just apathy for the licence
I loved one and two but can’t feel the same enthusiasm for 3 - whether that’s dlc bloat and I feel I haven’t finished 2 yet I dont know
-
^I feel the bloat, for the entire series in the last 6-7 years, to be honest. I have not fired up WHIII yet.
Slightly off topic, I just fired up Three Kingdoms Total War for the first time and have about four hours in with it total, all this week. It is clearly very well put together and slick, but the similarity of every faction, and the sheer number of them, is mind-crushing.
Not sure how long I will last with Three Kingdoms :/

Speaking only for myself, it's definitely both of things, plus a ton of other factors. (There's too many to list...)
I loved one and two but can’t feel the same enthusiasm for 3 - whether that’s dlc bloat and I feel I haven’t finished 2 yet I dont know
For me, a big part of it is simply franchise fatigue: In the last year or so, I very suddenly realized I was growing tired of Warhammer -- of it getting all the hype & attention the last 6-7 years, the DLC bloat (as you mentioned), the increased toxicity in the community it's caused, etc. Combined with WH3's lackluster state at launch -- the poorly thought-out gameplay elements, the bugs, the unsatisfying options for singleplayer campaigns, etc. -- it really takes away the appetite for yet another Warhammer title.
On the flip side, I really miss the straight historical TW games; the last one that truly qualified was Thrones of Britannia. I dearly want to see CA get back to focusing on them -- of course, they always claim they never stopped doing so, but everyone knows better.

That is definitely a game I need to get back into and spend more time with. It still calls to me even now...
I get what you're saying about the factions, including the "mind-crushing" number to choose from (excellent turn of phrase, btw :notworthy: ). However, I'll admit that personally, it just makes me giddy to want to try at least most of them at some point. They all seem so damn fascinating!

Roadmap time
-
Wow, it only took CA a month to come out with it from the time they first said it was coming. I'm amazed it didn't take longer. ::)
My sarcasm aside, it does look like a fairly decent list of changes & improvements for the next two updates, and 1.2 especially. The AI anti-player bias, auto-resolve issues, and oddly slow unit responsiveness have all been particularly common (and sometimes vitriolic) complaints. I wasn't aware of overly-bright snow being an issue, but I have no trouble believing it, given how garish the Warhammer maps are in general.
I'm sure there will be much wailing and lamentation that Immortal Empires isn't coming until version 2.0 -- and only a beta release, at that -- and strictly speaking, I wouldn't blame anyone for reacting that way. At the same time, it's pretty obvious that realistically, there's simply no way CA could bring IE to the community any sooner than that; and I suspect that by now, most players realize it as well (given all the issues the game has had since launch). I think it's painfully clear to everyone at this point that by all rights, WH3 probably should've been delayed by another 6 months or so (though admittedly that probably wasn't realistic from Sega's perspective).
Also, this bit definitely caught my attention:
Following Update 1.2, we have one last regular update before moving on to our next major game release.
Given CA intends v1.3 to still release during Q3, I can only presume this "next major game release" will be coming out in Q4. Given that, I have to believe they'll be announcing this new game soon, as even for Saga titles (which is what I'm guessing the next game is) CA likes to allow for around six months of lead-up time for building hype. It'll be interesting to see what they announce.
-

I didn’t realise the whole map wasn’t available yet!!
Even Mortal Empires didn't release until a month or two after Warhammer II came out. Given the myriad of problems WH3 has faced, Immortal Empires being delayed was even more inevitable (though perhaps with less excuse).
But I like the sound of reworking the original races to bring them in-line with the new
As do I. Although again, I think it pretty much had to happen. If races like Chaos, Vampire Counts, etc. don't get a rework at some point, there will likely be rioting in Horsham. :P

Update 1.2 is out.

-
^Yeah it took an hour for my pc to download it last night :/
I may actually purchase (and play!) Songs of Conquest before this as people are raving about that game while with WHIII…not so much.
-
To be fair, I don't think it's all doom & gloom. Now that the DLC team is on the case, I suspect the game's quality will improve rather markedly. It's just that they're starting from much further behind than usual.
-
I suppose CA had to release this trailer because of Games Workshop's "Warhammer Skulls - Festival of Video Games" event, but the timing still feels hilariously premature:
-
CA finally shares some real info on Immortal Empires:
https://www.totalwar.com/blog/intro-to-immortal-empires/
This is definitely...better.
They're finally communicating with the players and managing the community's expectations -- two things CA should have been doing from the very start. It doesn't undo the damage that's been done, but hopefully it signals improved communication going forward.
Of course, this *is* coming from the DLC crew, who always seem to do a better job of things than the main team, including community engagement. So there's zero guarantee CA won't simply bork this up with another title in the future. ::)
-
I hope it runs smoother than 2. Even my new PC has problems, but, there again, I haven't really taken the time to optimise it, so it could be partly my fault. I need to but some more time into it.
<sigh>

An interview with game director Rich Aldridge:

Sounds like the 1.3 update *should* be out later this month. A lot of factions and Legendary Lords from WH1 are being reworked for Immortal Empires, and the community will finally be getting new color options for the game HUD so that they're not stuck with the widely-disliked red patina.
I hope it runs smoother than 2. Even my new PC has problems, but, there again, I haven't really taken the time to optimise it, so it could be partly my fault. I need to but some more time into it.
<sigh>
From what I've read, WH3 actually runs slightly worse than Warhammer II right now...and I imagine that's not going to get any better once Immortal Empires is added.
Of course, I expect optimization improvements to be a major focus as time goes by, and CA was able to speed things up significantly with Warhammer II. So who knows what the game's performance will be like in a year or two? At the moment, though, it doesn't appear to be that great. :-\
-
I'll keep tabs on it as I have played II much less that I would like.

Immortal Empires map revealed. (No surprise: it's massive.)
https://www.totalwar.com/blog/tww3-the-immortal-empires-map/
Cody points out some interesting things about the new sea lanes:
-
I wonder what impact that will have on speed of play - in terms of FPS?
-
Realistically, I imagine it's going to be pretty slow, especially at first. CA will find ways to improve performance over time, but I honestly doubt it's ever going to be that great in turns of turn-times or frame-rates.
-
Unfortunately, I don't seem to the the patience these days to sit and read a book while screens update. Watching a loading bar crawl along at snails pace I find to be a great off-putter.
-
Can't say I blame you, Bawb. Even on my new rig, loading screen times can take a bit.
-
Its really bloody annoying because the game obviously has so much going for it. I may try dropping some of the setting down again, but there does come to a point where it just looks...unappealing.
-
Did the game run its own set up at the start where it runs snapshots of the game and works out the FPS
-
Now your asking me something ???
-
i THINK its warhammer - when you select graphic settings it says 'wait right there' and zooms into the map, out, in, zooms to a battle, zooms in, zooms out, another battle, more scenery - until it works out your cards best settings and then goes ta da and sets everything within a custom setting - then again this might be Eugen stuff, im getting old
i had to google, flat platform outside your window today because id forgotten the word balcony - for a million pounds i couldnt remember balcony
-
They say its the first thing to....................erm...something.
-
who are you?
-
No, I idea. But if you find out, let me know.
I'll be standing on that flat platform thingie outside the window.

Q&A with the devs:
-
Interesting.
-
^ Yeah. The somewhat vague and oft-noncommittal answers are a bit annoying, but at least they've dropped the obnoxious "dazzle them corporate-speak" bullshit they were peddling six months ago. I just wish it hadn't taken WH3's launch being a shit-show to humble them into talking like normal developers again.
-
As with a lot of their stuff, I'm always wary of the hype - the proof of the game is in the playing, so to speak.

As with a lot of their stuff, I'm always wary of the hype - the proof of the game is in the playing, so to speak.
Indeed. Well said, Bawb.
I have a feeling we're looking at another Rome II situation, which actually (and admittedly) bodes well for the game, long-term. I suspect WH3 will get where it needs to be, eventually -- especially now that CA's "we have to fix everything the main crew f***ed up yet AGAIN" post-release content team is on the job -- but I think it's going to be a very long road to get there.
-
We shall see, but I'm not in any great rush for it.

A (belated) look at the updates some of the older races are getting when Immortal Empires drop -- the Vampire Counts, Lizardmen, Dark Elves, and the Norsca:
https://www.totalwar.com/blog/twwh3-ie-race-updates/
No surprise that CA featured these folks first: Of all non-DLC races from the first two games, these are the ones who've gone the longest without a major buff or rework. (Heck, even a few DLC races -- like Wood Elves and Beastmen -- have received more love.) I suspect this will make a lot of folks happy...or at least complain less. ;)

CA explains their stance on the various Chaos lords/gods/etc, and how that dovetails with the community's long-running debate over the matter:
https://www.totalwar.com/blog/tww3-the-chaos-debate/
One thing to note is that when the Immortal Empire beta drops, confederation among the Chaos Legendary Lords won't be possible at launch. Something to possibly bear in mind.

Vilitch the Curseling is the 3rd Legendary Lord in the upcoming Champions of Chaos DLC:
https://www.totalwar.com/blog/tww3-introducing-vilitch/

Still seeing nothing that says give me your money - and this from someone who stayed up on release of 1 and 2 to play it straight away
-
Yeah, I'm not at all enthralled with this lords pack. But then, I've also never been a fan of Chaos (inasmuch as I'm even a Warhammer fan at all) -- finding Norsca somewhat interesting about the closest I get.
I don't imagine WH3 will really be worth getting until after Immortal Empires drops. And even then, I'd personally wait until it was at least somewhat balanced, AND the turn times brought down to something approximating reasonable (since we all know turn-processing is going to be atrocious right out the gate).
-
I feel so silly for pre-ordering this. The more I see of their plans for it the less interested I am. I wish I could refund and I also would love to know what CA’s next historical title will be.

Eh, I wouldn't beat yourself up over it, Gus. It might seem obvious in hindsight now, sure, but I don't know that anyone would've truly predicted CA would screw the pooch *this* hard. Their stewardship over the first two Warhammer titles had gone well, after all, and I suspect it was genuinely difficult for any of us to imagine that WH3 would be released in the state that it was.
Even if it wasn’t their plan the only way to cheer up grumpy CA fans now will be M3
Indeed. If maintain that if their next major historical "tentpole" title isn't Medieval 3 -- or at the very least, Empire 2 -- CA is going to find themselves in serious trouble.

Overview of the campaign map for Immortal Empires:
-
Big day for Warhammer III: Update 2.0.0, the Immortal Empires campaign (beta), Champions of Chaos DLC, and (for the few who care) the Blood for the Blood God III DLC all released
today yesterday:
https://www.totalwar.com/blog/tww3-update-200/
https://www.totalwar.com/blog/tww3-ie-faq/

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1374300/Total_War_WARHAMMER_III__Blood_for_the_Blood_God_III/
Apparently, the number of players on Steam have shot up from around 10,000 to nearly 107,000...and in less than 24 hours, at that. Some admittedly impressive numbers.
-
It got a very good write up at RPS too - an epic genius with huge content
-
Looks like CA is adding variety to the endgame, and allowing players to customize it to their liking as well.
-
Total War: Warhammer 3 player numbers went up tenfold after Immortal Empires released (https://www.pcgamer.com/total-war-warhammer-3-player-numbers-went-up-tenfold-after-immortal-empires-released/)
-
It’s what I would have waited for
-
^ Yeah, same.
I have noticed the player numbers seem to have "settled" back down a bit after the initial release of Immortal Empires. However, they're still holding steady at around 75,000 (peak) players on a daily basis, which is obviously a significant improvement over before.
-
Update 2.1 is out:
https://www.totalwar.com/blog/tww3-update-210/
For all the various changes & improvements in the patch, easily the most significant feature is the addition of the Assembly Kit. Finally having official modding tools to work with will be very welcome by the community, and -- not so incidentally -- greatly extend the life of the game in the long term.
-
Also: An interview with the folks who worked on both the newly-released Champions of Chaos DLC, plus the re-work to the Warriors of Chaos.

Perhaps its been discussed already, if so please accept my apologies; but do I need to have WH1 and 2 installed in order to be able to play those factions in WH3’s Immortal Empire mode or is owning them on Steam good enough?
Also, not that the trilogy is sort of complete, which campaign do you guys recommend to learn the game mechanics with? Its been a long time since I played any Total War, let alone Warhammer.
Thanks!

You only need to own the other two games on Steam. Installing them is unnecessary.

Presuming you're talking about WH3, then you probably want to check out "The Lost God" campaign. It essentially serves as the game's tutorial campaign, and by at least a few accounts I've read, it actually does a decent job of teaching you the game's mechanics and features.
-
Cheers, Martok!
Well I am not sure if there’s any compelling reason to start one of the campaigns of the first two games over the one in WH3 before going to Mortal Empires, which seems to be like ‘the’ campaign .
-
Mortal Empires is massive and makes my head hurt. Sometimes there is too much of a good thing.
-
Well I just finished the tutorial campaign.
Took me almost 7 hours and a couple of reloads due to some parts of the UI glitching out, preventing me from continuing my turn.
Overall I enjoyed it very much. It's a cool story and for once I feel the tutorial in a Total War game is quite clear in what it wants you to do. :)
I've now started the Chaos Campaign and was delighted to see the story from the tutorial to continue, albeit from a different angle. Strong start so far.
I did encounter various glitches as said. Quite annoying snags like menus or info screens presented on top of eachother, while preventing any input to get rid of the situation. Also some turn button glitches preventing me to continue, as said. Performance seems very decent on Ultra, even with big battles so far.
-
State of the Game:
https://www.totalwar.com/blog/sotg-oct22/
Highlights:
1.) More endgame/crisis scenarios are coming (and will probably cover all races eventually)
2.) Minor settlement battles will continue to be balanced/worked on
3.) Update 2.3 will be released before the end of the year
-
The news is almost a month old now, but Immortal Empires officially launched:
I'll admit, it's fun seeing the Order-tide factions gathered in one place...and Thorgrim (naturally) being the one who's doing his best to spoil Karl's efforts. :hehe:
And of course, the 2.4 update dropped alongside Immortal Empires:
https://www.totalwar.com/blog/tww3-update-240/
The big announcement here was that players now only need to own Warhammer 3 in order to access the Immortal Empires campaign, rather than needing to own all three games. This appears to be have been met with a largely positive reception among the fanbase, including/even those who already owned the first Warhammer titles.
And in other news:
I am a whore. I am a huge whore who can't resist a decent sale price. Sigh.

In what was news to no one -- much less by the time it was officially announced a couple weeks ago -- the Chaos Dwarfs are coming:
https://store.steampowered.com/app/2059190/Total_War_WARHAMMER_III__Forge_of_the_Chaos_Dwarfs/
The only the thing that surprises me is that the DLC is being released next month already. Given how tight-lipped CA has been about the game -- they *still* haven't released an official roadmap -- combined with their continued overall poor communication with (and management of) the fan community, I didn't imagine the expansion would be coming out this soon.
The other thing raising eyebrows, of course, is the DLC's price: $24.99 USD (unless you preorder it). Not sure how I feel about that, myself, other than "mixed". I'm certainly not happy about it, but on the other hand, it was bound to happen eventually -- and I guess "eventually" has finally arrived. Other companies like Paradox have similarly started raising the price on DLC (and base games) in the past year or two, so while it's obviously not good news, I'm not exactly surprised by it either.
In either case, it's a moot point for me personally, as -- unlike approximately 99% of the fanbase (from what I can tell) -- I have no interest in the Chaos Dwarfs. I'm already happy with the faction/lord selection available to me, particularly since I do own both the 1st and 2nd Warhammer titles, plus a good amount of the previous DLC. (In fact, I've still barely scratched the surface when it comes to sampling the immense variety of flavors & play-styles the game now offers; and I don't anticipate running out of choices anytime soon!)

Still not getting my buttons pressed by 3 and took the inevitable decision to uninstall 2 and 1 the other day - I think I’m done but that’s the beauty of steam if I want to go back

I only picked up WH3 because I was able to get it 50% off. No way was I ever going to pay more than that, especially when I'm only interested in two of the game's playable factions (Kislev and Grand Cathay). Granted, the game does also include numerous improvements & features (that the first two games lack) that interested me as well.
That being said, I'm probably going to take a break from Warhammer III for a bit. I've been running into numerous issues -- nothing that make the game "unplayable", just annoying stuff -- that I hope to see get fixed and/or addressed at some further point down the line. And it's not like I don't have this ridiculous backlog of other games I badly want to play in the meantime. :silly:

I pre-ordered it for Cathay and Kislev, mofos! Still hurts :/

Indeed. The fact that this time around, you pre-ordered WH3, while -- in contrast -- I actually waited an entire year before buying it, is merely further proof of my theory that irony is one of the great constants in the universe.

I would like irony to give me a refund.

It's only taken CA the better part of a year ( ::) ), but they've finally released the 12-month roadmap:

Setting aside the various DLC that's coming, I'm glad the devs are also going back and revisiting some of the older races (like the Empire and the Dwarfs). Most of them badly need some updating.

Still holding strong

Patch 3.1 dropped this past week. Highlights include updates to Bretonnia, Dark Elves, Chaos Dwarfs end-game, plus a new Free-LC Legendary Hero (Herald Hammerstorm -- the original wielder of the titular Warhammer).

OK, look, the real highlight of that was the giant at the end. Totally should've been more of that in there
