The counters are a VAST improvement.
Whats up with the cards? Are they for activation?
Title: Re: LnLP World at War Series reboot
Post by: bob48 on September 13, 2018, 09:46:42 AM
That is exactly what I thought with regards to the counters!
Title: Re: LnLP World at War Series reboot
Post by: Barthheart on September 13, 2018, 09:48:42 AM
Yep. Card deck instead of chits in a cup.

Also note no unit designations on the counters. Just the coloured strip to match with formation cards. makes it easier to change up formation names and other attributes.

I guess that will save on counter count.

They're not going to be able to do "upgrade kits" for the old games, right? I think David said they had to make too many changes to be able to retrofit the original games. Certainly seems like it based on those pics.

Yes I think that's right. Rules have changes, maps have change, etc. Even the values on the counters have swapped locations.

Looks great! Just tell me Jar Jar Abrams isn't involved in this 'reboot'.

Not a big deal really to buy new. I loved the old games, but they were not without their flaws.

Given how much stuff I play on mobile throughout the day, I doubt that.  But traditional tabletop wargaming?  Yeah, you probably do

Looks impressive, and they have certainly improved the artwork, especially the counters. It looks much better than the 'old' version.

The old counters were a bit of a mess.
Title: Re: LnLP World at War Series reboot
Post by: bob48 on February 06, 2019, 11:21:54 AM
Very difficult to read in many cases due to the strange font type and colours that were used. Typical of the old regime!

I had most, if not all, of the original WaW games but eventually sold 'em off.

DO IT! Already worth way more than the $70 buy in. There's more stretch goals coming. More value for your dollar.

It's alot like Flashpoint Campaigns: Red Storm only in a board game.

And you won't lose yer money like with some other KS campaigns that shall not be named.... Up Front.....  :tickedoff:

A dream team of US and West German Armored has finally coalesced north of Frankfurt for a counterattack intended to bludgeon the oncoming Soviets and save the Rhine River crossings. United States Army M-1s and Bundeswehr Leopard-2s battle Soviet T-80s and East German T-72s in a battle of the behemoths!

Don't think so. They have all this stuff printer ready. Pretty sure David wanted to give it all to us. He's pretty generous that way.

What's amazing is how much of the weapons in this game, could be ported to a current times game 33 years later.  Abrams, T-72/80, Mi-24, Apache.

Thing is how much they've changed though. A 1986 Abrams or Apache is not close to the same as the 2019 models. Same for the Soviet/Russian stuff. Same names, but very different equipment.

Yea, I was thinking of that while I was typing.  Everything has been updated/modified, but there hasn't been a large amount of new systems.

Kind of like one point in the Honor Harrington books.  The Navy couldn't build new classes of ships, but they could modify existing classes.  Results were the same.

It's down to averaging about $3000 per day, so the last stretch goal should hopefully be reached in a couple of days.

What a bargain for $70..

This has to be one of the best KS packages (in a wargames context) for a long time. Seem little doubt that the 10th goal will not be achieved.

If they do a similar re-boot for the NaW system,  especially if it corrects some of the terrible glitches of the original games, then I would be sorely tempted.

However, as good as the price is at $70, for me it would also mean a further $22 shipping, plus VAT and UK customs tariff which would likely mean a final total of around double the 'base' price of $70.

Yeah, it's an extra $25 for me too but no extra customs duty luckily due to it being under $400 so still worth it.

Bob, they have a UK distributor so you should not have to pay VAT and customs. It also costs me an extra $22 for shipping.... but that's the cost of getting things around the world....

I thought US shipping was going to be at least $17 which is understandable - it's going to be a lot of game to ship.

Barth - I know that Andy at Limey Yank Games does act as a distributor for a few publishers and thus is able to offer a 'Euro-Friendly' shipping scheme on pre-ordered stuff only. However, LnL is, unfortunately, not currently one of them.

Bob, LnL do theirs through Second Chance Games, iirc, and I'm pretty sure they offered Euro-friendly shipping when they had the big restock for LnLT last year.

This made me chuckle from the FAQ

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/lnlp/storming-the-gap-world-at-war-85/faqs (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/lnlp/storming-the-gap-world-at-war-85/faqs)

Will there be Vampires, Werewolves or other Supernatural phenomena in the storyline of the scenarios of the games, like in the old World At War series?

We jokingly call this the no monster edition, though the old World At War series had them: no, sorry, none in World At War 85. For myself, I feel that “military-horror” is an absolutely brilliant choice for a role-playing game genre (I would so play in that game and so would some of my friends!). However, this is not that game. The background world has been rewritten to correspond more closely to the real-world situation in 1985, sans the Supernatural. But even in that I have taken liberties, since any wargame is, in the end, an experiment in alternate history. But it is not a cross-genre endeavor: World At War 85 is all pure tanks and troops, no vamps or were-s’ included.

Bob, direct quote from David in the KS comments section:

We have a German partner and a UK partner. We did think about the issue with BREXIT.

Oh and shipping in Europe and Britain is only $20 USD for the base game and all the stretch goals.

What you'll find is that LnL will send all the UK KS orders to SCG in bulk and they will send them them on to UK customers with no Customs charges as they are being sent from within the UK. I found this out last year as my pre-order for Heroes of North Africa got mistakenly sent to SCG and he then sent it on to me in NZ.

You guys have just UNLOCKED Stretch Goal 14

Data Cards for Storm and Steel Second Wave has an enlarged combat unit counter, and also lists any special functions of that unit, with rules references for them as well. We also show the movement and range in hexes but we include movement and range translated into 6mm, 15mm and 28mm scale for use when playing WaW85 with your favorite Miniatures system.

One Stretch Goal left to go, Stretch Goal 15 the Solo Assistant Card Set. We have until Thursday March 7, 10:00 am to reach the last Stretch Goal spread the word.

Were the ring bound manuals extra? If so, how can I find out if I ordered them on my Kickstarter?

Components look fantastic

Yes ring bound we’re extra. $30.

Go back in to the post KS manager and you see what you pledged for.

Thanks. I'll go back and check. Do you think I'm able to "upgrade"? I've never done Kickstarter before, so I don't know...I will check myself, but just asking in case you know.

I can't seem to.

It says on the main page in the Add On Instructions that you click Manage Your Pledge at the top of the page,  but there's no option on the page for that. All I can see is the ability to see my pledge and a Pre-Order button

JD, using your confirmation email there should be a link at the bottom that says "Use this link to view and manage your pledge".

It should take you to CrowdOx page and part way down that page is a link to modify your pledge. See first pic.

It takes you to a warning about reopening your pledge. See second pic.

I didn't go further but in there you should be able to add or subtract anything you wish.

Ah...thank you very much BH. I had given up but that's exactly what I had to do.

I kind of wish I had given up...I thought it was $30 for both manuals...just spunked $66 on them!

But it is a birthday present (that no-one else bu me knows about!!)  ;D

US-China Possible Trade War and What it Means for You.

We have been flooded with questions about the possible 25% tariff and if that is going to change our current pledge amounts or raise any cost to any our backers.  Our short answer is no.

We do not expect to make any changes to any of our active Kickstarters (Space Infantry Resurgence or World At War 85 - Storming the Gap).  If 25% tariff is applied to us we will absorb any additional cost.  We made a commitment to our backers and we feel it is important we honor that.

We do expect that it will cause us to raise the MSRP price once the game is released.

My over-under line is delivery by end of year.

US Update:  The Original Grognard (Devin) went and drove down to the Port of Tacoma on this wonderful wet and cold blustery day. Why? The ship carrying the 3 containers of the new shipment of games for Lock and Load Publishing is alongside the pier. He went up to the Port of Tacoma observation tower and got what shoots he could. The ship was hidden behind a big warehouse. But you can see the bow and the bridge.

What does this mean? Our containers are being loaded onto the rail lines heading to Cleveland Ohio. So we are getting closer to getting the games.   A BIG thank you goes out to Devin for the extraordinary effort and pictures.

No telling how long it takes to get unloaded, get customs sorted, filter out illegal immigrants,  and the containers distributed, but you would think that it should be all done before the end of January?

Update via email today:

Quote
US/UK-EU Container Update
The UK-EU Shipment should arrive today in Antwerp and be in Liverpool on 01/08/2020.  I have received some confirmation on this today.  We still do not know if the containers are being trucked to the UK or placed on another ship and then being transported to Liverpool.
US Containers are now loaded into two (maybe more) 53" long trailers and on there way to our warehouse in Pueblo, Colorado.  The expected arrival date this Thursday or Friday, YES this WEEK.

I was going on the basis that a search for the MSC MIA showed it heading for Gdansk.

I'm well aware that LnL thought it would be in Liverpool by Jan 8th - I couldn't see how that was possible as it was heading through the English Channel to Gdansk only the day I posted.

I'll be very happy when I get it - I'm just not holding out for anytime soon.

Also I've written 3 times to Second Chance Games asking if they were the distributors (which they are - just looking for confirmation from them that they would've been in receipt of my order details) and asking if they had an update. No response to all 3.

But - I wait patiently. In all honesty, even when it gets here the likelyhood is I'll open it and go back to Combat!. Have I mentioned how superb that game is - warts and all?  >:D

The US Trucks are now unloading at our warehouse in Pueblo, Colorado. The warehouse team will need a few days to make sure everything is properly received and entered into inventory. We get some pictures and more updates shortly.

 :D

And then there's this:

Quote
As many of you know the vessel that the UK-EU container is on did not stop at the port of Antwerp and unload as was told to us. It is now in Poland docked and I assume unloading there. The only confirmation I received was it would be in Liverpool on January 10, 2020. They have not told us anything else. We have asked if it was the right ship? was there a mistake? I am promised more details early next week.

Sorry JD.

lol - I'm cool about it. Combat! is taking all my time. It's actually the longest time I've not only had a boardgame out on the table, but consistently gone back to. I've had to pack it up off the table over Christmas but it was straight back out as soon as I had the chance.

Heres the original post

Quote
I received an email this morning with links to a novel about the actions portrayed in the Kickstarter game we are supposed to get.

I am sure this will get me flamed but frankly I don’t give a tinkers dam about a novel. First of all it’s been done before and likely better by guys like Clancy and Bond. I don’t care about a novel; I won’t read the novel; I won’t keep the novel.

I did not do Kickstarter for a novel. I did it for a game. And do far that has been zippidee do dah. I know...we’ve seen pictures of the game in China; we’ve seen a slow boat from China; we’ve seen maps and pictures of boxes in a Colorado warehouse. But so far no game in hand.

Since the wonderful warehouse pictures there have been no updates. For something that was supposed to be in our hands before Christmas all we have is a book. Oh boy. What joy. So where is the game??    What is the status??

I’m sure I’ll get flamed big time for being a naysayer but I would like what I paid for and have been waiting for months to receive.

A) Still the best deal on a great game ever.
B) It’s not like you don’t a have tons of other games to play.

Just impatience on my part. I've never liked tying up money on games for long periods like this. Inevitably there will be delays and it always frustrates me a little. A quirk of my personality really, but it is why I stay away from most pre-orders and KS.

I'm not particularly fussed. The only thing that gets my anxiety up is forgetfulness. I once returned an item on eBay and every now and again I'd remember I needed to chase my refund...but I'd only remember when I wasn't near a piece of hardware that I could do that on.

I got my refund almost a year later

I've got plenty of games. It's almost here. I suppose it's also the buildup for some...something being so close and yet still so far away.

This.

From LnL's posts, the games were in a warehouse in Ohio, which means when they went to Colorado, they passed with an hour of me.  I would have been more than happy to buy the truck drive a meal if I could have gotten then :)

I'm not too concerned either.  MMP has been publishing ASL modules lately, and that has been keeping me busy.

When this game arrives, it will probably sit on my shelf for a while.  It will be a great value for the money spent.  It's only the second kickstarter I've backed, and I'll always be highly skeptical of any promised delivery timelines.

Mine's due to arrive tomorrow but I won't be home to accept it.  The tracking number I got from Fedex says I'm responsible for import fees.

No clipping required, counters just pop out of the sheets with no effort and already round corners.

He's into Magic the Gathering (which I'm not into, try to play some to humor him). He has Gloomhaven, which I really like, but our other son is not interested, which is a bummer, much better with 3 players.

Anyways Eric moved into his apt in Boston this weekend, and I drove Craig back to UMass Amherst yesterday. I think once I get all the stickers on, I could probably convince Craig to try Command Colours and he'll probably like it. Craig's the younger one, he's always playing Paradox titles on the PC.

I'm a bit confused

From what I gather, Liverpool was to be visited on the 10th January. But I've just seen this update on the website
Quote
UK-EU Container is currently still scheduled for Liverpool for 01/27/2020 this was confirmed again today.

huh? I tracked the ship they told us and it docked in Liverpool on the 10th Jan. Also they say "still scheduled" - I couldn't find a post where they said that was the scheduled date at all.

Again - not bothered just confused  ???

They were originally given the wrong ship name.  That was the ship that had already docked, but their cargo wasn't on it.
Title: Re: LnLP World at War Series reboot
Post by: judgedredd on January 23, 2020, 12:07:06 PM
Yeah - I remember that. But when I checked and said it was docked, that was the new name

New FB update from David on FB:

Quote
We were giving the wrong vessel name. The correct vessel is the MSC Mandy and it is in the UK. Our container should be in Liverpool on January 10, 2020.

 :bigthumb:
Indeed...Showing in Bristol at present.  :bigthumb:

The US ship dropped a while ago didn't it? Does anyone have theirs yet?
I checked MSC Mandy - and it was docked in Liverpool on the 10th.

He sent out another update on 1/17. They were given bad information a second time.

Assuming this information is correct, the container will not be in Liverpool, UK until January 27, 2020.  The latest vessel is the MSC Alessia.

Haven't seen any contradictions, at least I don't think so, but there are a few glaring errors and unclear/missing things. Some of it's just hard to find even with the huge index... which could have been larger still...
Title: Re: LnLP World at War Series reboot
Post by: mirth on January 26, 2020, 09:12:58 PM
That was a frustrating part of the original game. It's not a complex rule set, but it could be unclear and difficult to find things.
Title: Re: LnLP World at War Series reboot
Post by: Barthheart on January 26, 2020, 09:18:49 PM
Even the scenario I'm doing in the AAR, I've found 3 errors just in the setup instructions.

Overall though, I think it plays close enough to the original that if you've figured that out you can play this version. It is more streamlined. But HQs are still a little funky when you start a scenario... at least I think I have it right...

And it's fun and so far gives some sense for the weapon systems and difference between the combatants.

I'm still not clear on the defensive bonus from terrain.  Does it apply to armoured units or not?  Section 10.4 seems to say that it doesn't but later on, it mentions armoured vehicles getting the extra defence dice.  If they do get the dice, do they still roll against their armour value or is it only 5-6 like soft targets?

Concealment says it offers a +1 bonus.  Does that mean units get +1 to their defensive die rolls or do they get an extra 1d6?

Transport rules 9.8.1 have a contradiction in the first two paragraphs.  The first paragraph says that if the transport and the passenger unit start in the same hex, the passengers can load and the transport can move 1/2 its MP.  The next paragraph says that a transport is marked Ops Complete the moment a passenger boards it.  I'm assuming that this refers to towed units only but it's not as clear as it could be.

To be clear, whatever issues the original game had I stilled enjoyed it a great deal. I was hoping they had worked most of the bugs out in this one, but I'll be happy with improved counters as a start.

Just re-read 10.4 and I can now see how you might think that. My first run through, I read it as for sure that ALL units got to add terrain defensive bonuses... but it could be read the other way I guess.

Concealment  - I read it as +1d6 because you need to be in terrain with a Defensive Bonus, which when you look at the TEC, there's a column that's called Defence Bonus and they are all +1d6.
My question for concealment is do you get when being shot at from a lower elevation even in you're in open terrain on a hill...?

Yeah that last statement in the second paragraph of 9.8.1 is just wrong. I think it was only meant to be at the end of the third paragraph.

Having played a bunch over the weekend, I'm not entirely sold on the card instead of chit for formation activations. With only a few formations in a small scenario it's hard to randomize/shuffle only 3 or 5 cards where 3 or 5 chits is a cup feels more random...

Having multiple cards with different moral and command ranges on them to represent different formations or the same formation with different stats is a cool idea, but I feel that could be done with chits too.

With the very large scenario I'm playing now though, the formation deck is more manageable from a shuffling point of view....

My wife didn't say anything about my purchase, or about my game purchases at Christmas time.  Didn't even ask for me to pay for it out of my Christmas and birthday money.  However, two weeks ago she said she wants a new Suburban.  Then this weekend, she announced she wants to look at new furniture for the living room.  I think I've been out maneuvered..

Mine came as well, and it might be the heaviest kickstarter box I have ever received. 18 pounds I believe?  Only Gloomhaven, and 7th Continent, to my memory even rival it in weight.

I thought when they said shipping is dealt with I just assumed there'd be no taxes - no extras. To pay tax on top of the cost of the game (and almost as much as the game) is shocking. I thought tax was meant to be a percentage of the cost - not whatever they want.

Second Chance Games have the games apparently

I suspect it likely will be. You would have to hope that LnL did some homework to make sure that people would not be hit by any extra charges though. DH seems like a pretty genuine and clued-up bloke, so maybe its just a screw-up somewhere down the line by the shippers.

Vassal module is available

http://www.vassalengine.org/wiki/Module:World_At_War_85:_Storming_the_Gap

I don't understand - they give the game away for free as a Vassal module? How does that work? The rules are online and so anyone can read the online manual and play the game.

I'm not bothered about it - just wondering how they financially justify it. Personally I couldn't see me playing it on Vassal because boardgaming loses something in transition to the computer screen.

lol - I know

But my frustration is more concern really. Until I get my notification, I don't have a game for my money. I'm certainly not going to play it when I get it but I will punch it and bag it, check out the components and probably keep the manual out.Irrational? Probably.

I've got 20 games. All are opened, punched and clipped (it's like the smell of a new book or a new car...can't help myself).

Of those,  5 haven't been played.

Of those 5, 2 are due to space and map sizes (Holland '44 and Ardennes '44) and game space restrictions (although I actually have played part of Holland '44 - so I at least got that to the table for a short time), Space Empires because Combat! bit me and kept me from getting it to the table, Silver Bayonet because at the time I had Holland '44 on the big table and Battle Hymn! Gettysburg and Pea Ridge - which will be rectified after my AAR on Combat has finished which will be this weekend.

So after this weekend, only 4 will remain unplayed and now I have no cat (she passed away bless her - only 6 years old), I can have the big table all the time and so I'll be able to get Ardennes '44 and Holland '44 .

My gameplay sequence is likely to be (space permitting)

As it stands now, LnL are going to find it difficult to get anyone to commit to similar ventures in the future, unless we see some satisfactory outcome. I'm not saying that the fault lies with LnL, but its they to whom the mud will stick.

The main box is ripped along the edge at the bottom. What's the score? Would they replace the box? Should I bother to even ask and just celotape it together myself? What would you guys do?

Pieces are cracking though.

I've fixed stuff like that before using PVA wood glue - it gives a very strong joint and its clear when it dries.

Just in case you missed this Barth.

Quote
FedEx claims these are Canadian fees and taxes and we are still disputing this. Since we promised our Kickstarter / Crowdox backers these orders would be Canada Friendly we are going to have these charges re-billed to LnLP. We are truly sorry this issue has occurred and will make different arrangements for Kickstarter Campaigns in the future.

After going back and forth with FedEx and no solution to correct these invoices, we have finally today (March 3, 2020) received approval today to have these invoices transferred to LnLP, leaving us a very limited window to have these charges transfer to LnLP.

All of the following information and must be complete and to us within the next 10 days to be transferred. If an item is not provided, incomplete and or incorrect FedEx will not allow the bill to transferred and in cases you will be expected to pay the additional fees.

Please reply to or open a Support Ticket via our Support Ticket at http://support.lnlpublishing.com and provide all the required information below.

1) Full name and shipped to address.

2) Scanned PDF of your Invoice showing the Invoice Number, Customer Name, Address, and Amount Due.

3) Order Tracking Number.

Once we have received a confirmation from FedEx we will let you know. Again we are sorry for this inconvenience and thank you for your support and business.

So I started reading the rules - very well presented and well laid out...superb job - however there are a couple of things that reminded me of a couple of "bug bears" from my original game...

Apart from that I am really enjoying reading these rules.

I've played 3 games of solo with the Solo Assistant and it's great fun. Letting it do it's thing is the most important part, I've seen a few videos and AARs where people override it nearly every turn when it would do something they thought was wrong or didn't make sense.

I had one instance where the SA had manoeuvred it's units into assault range and I was all ready for it to do so next activation. It's next card draw had the units stay in place and fire instead and I almost overrode it as it needed to capture those positions for victory but thought I'd play it out and see what happens. It ended up decimating my units with point blank fire and was able to pretty much walk in to my positions next activation. It was very impressive and showed me to leave it alone except for the really dumb moves. Great game and looking forward to playing more.

I agree Pinetree, people are too quick to override the SA. Just let it play out and see what happens. Same is true for the LnLT SA.

Title: Re: LnLP World at War Series reboot

Well, for large scenarios with lots of formations, the cards work fine.
For small scenarios with only a few formations I still don't like it. Chits would work better.

Still probably gonna make my own set of chits, basically just tiny cards that can go in a cup/bag to be drawn.

I haven't got this too the table yet...I'm hoping to do so in the next few days...but what's the footprint like? Looking at all the aid cards, it looks kinda large, though I know you can just have the PACs as a group until you need one
Title: Re: LnLP World at War Series reboot
Post by: Barthheart on April 19, 2020, 07:29:43 AM
The normal scenarios are not the large, 1,2,or 3 maps. You never need ALL the PAC. The most important are the Sequence of Play, Every Die Roll in the Game, Terrain Effects, Combat Modifiers, and the one with Missile capabilities on one side and Other capabilities on the other. If you got the great neoprene Matt with all the track then that.
So maybe 3’x5’ table.

The monster scenarios in Defence of Frankfurt cover my 4’x8’ table.

I started the first scenario today and I just wanted to throw a few checks in early on...see if I'm missing anything

I'm playing the solo assistant for BOTH sides - just to see how it pans out. I've got the cards set into 3 stacks...the base cards in the middle, the defensive cards to the left and the attacker cards to the right. Who ever is the side to go, I roll 1 d10 and on a 2 or less, they choose the specific card (defence or offence) and 3 and above they choose the generic card.

1. Soviets came on and moved 6 spaces...I Op Fire them when they get within range (6th space). I rolled 4 dice for M1A1 in woods looking for a To Hit of 5 or better correct?
2. Soviets rolled 4 dice looking for a Armour Save of 5 or better (no terrain bonus) correct?
3a. Next Soviets come on and move 3 spaces. Two T-80s open up on the M1A1 in woods. They roll 4 dice (3 inherently for a T-80 +1 for the second T-80 for volley fire) looking for a To hit of 4 or better correct?
3b. What's the point of volley fire? They only get one dice meaning 4 instead of 3 - but if they were to roll separately, they'd get 6 (2x3)?
5. The M1A1 rolls 5 dice for Armour Saves (4 inherently +1 for woods) correct?

Some observations...
This really isn't as deadly as I thought it would be. You'd be surprised rolling 4 To Hit die how many dice and how many times the roll is under the To Hit value of 5.
Why does the T-80 have a better To Hit number (4 to the M1A1's 5)...is it's targeting really better?

I haven't even played the first turn yet - that was just the opening impulse where the Soviets had the initiative.

Anyway - back to the game.....I'll let you know how playing the Solo Assistant for both sides goes.

There is one thing I noticed about the Solo Assistant right away.

The Solo Assistant suggests you pull one card for each unit or one card for the whole formation (recommended) and all of the formation abide by the order set.

I pulled a Defence card for NATO and there was a T80 in range of the M1A1 so the order was FIRE. However, the other two units in my formation were not in range and so had to sit it out. What I really wanted to do was to re-deploy my infantry and also Move & Fire with my other M1A1.

I'm not really a fan of that...I'll play along for this outing and see how it pans out. I can see the reasoning...HQ's giving the orders as opposed to units acting independently - but it does mean you could have (as I did) 2/3rds of your formation doing nothing (though they would obviously be available for Op Fire)

We'll see

Then again...Russian T80 just rolled 5*5 and speed it an M1A1 which rolled 4*1 and 1*2 and the HQ stacked with it

Actually - I think it just means use the same card for the formation - not use the same order when it says
Choose one orders card for the formation and evaluate each unit/stack in the formation versus the same Orders card (recommended)

So it's cool - take each unit/stack and evaluate it's situation against the orders on the card. Makes total sense now DUH!

So only a 1 or 2 on a D10 they do what they are supposed to be doing ie attacking or defending? Seems kinda low odds for that.

1. M1-Abrams, not M1A1s, but correct.
2. Correct.
3a. You can't use volley fire with Move and Fire. Otherwise yer math is correct.
3b. Volley fire: for example  2 x T-80 platoons vs 1 M1. You get to attack with 4 x d10 looking for 4 or better vs 4 x d10 looing for 5. If you attack separately you get 3 x d10 looking 4> vs 4 d10 looking for 5> and then another 3 x d10 looking 4> vs 4 d10 looking for 5>. So effectively when attacking singly you are 6 d10 looking for 4> vs 8 d10 looking for 5>.
It's better odds of getting more hits, which also is really important if the defender is in an improved position where the 1st hit is absorbed by the IP.
4. What happened to 4?
5. Correct.

Remember that these are M1s not M1A1s. The M1 only has a 105mm gun. The T-80 is sporting a 120mm gun. So it's not just To Hit but Killing Power in the rolls.
Put an HQ on a pair of T-80 and volley fire. Lots of things will go BOOM very fast!

Thanks Barth

Regarding the low odds doing what they were meant to...normally there's 12 defence/offence cards mixed in with 30 base cards. So the chances of pulling the "optimal" card is 1 in 2.5. With a 1-2 being used on a D6, the chances of pulling the appropriate card is 1 in 3. That's how I figured it.

Looks like I should've looked at the rather extensive units cards that came with the game which would've told me it was an M1 and not an M1A1 (why is the T80 missing from those cards?). Actually looking through those unit cards, I seem to be missing a few. I'm not sure what ones I should have, but there are NO Russian unit cards marked with Storming The Gap. The only Russian unit cards I have are stamped Defence of Frankfurt. Nevermind - I found them buried under the massive amount of goods you get with this game!

Thanks for explaining Volley Fire. I suppose there is a slight benefit...but a benefit none the less.

I don't know what happened to 4  :nerd:

You don’t have to look at the units card for the M-1, it’s marked right on the counter as M-1Abrams.

Ok. Russians won the first outing. Easily. They had 9 T80s to the US 2 M1s and an infantry unit with a TOW ATGM and an M113 which isn't really helpful at all except as transport.

I don't think the US had a chance in this scenario. Has anyone who played this won at the US? If so, how?

Also I gave up playing the Solo Assistant part way through. It just wasn't much fun tbh. It was just an experiment to see how they'd play it together anyway. It seemed like it might work...if you don't mind making any decisions at all...not even when up Op Fire

I'm now going to give the scenario another go to solidify the rules and evaluate the Solo Assistant properly as the Soviets

If you let me know what rules or procedures got yer back up I can try and let you know whether they've changed or not.

I would say this isn't necessarily my favourite scale. Having a platoon of of M1s or T80s taken out in one attack can make for a short game and can be brutal.

I would prefer a game like MBT (which I had back in the early 90's but never played) - but I've not had the courage to buy it with my memory of the rule book and tables being "WTF!!".

To anyone who has played this with at Solo Assistant

Where the order priority is specified in the manual (for example Priority-RED) it says
Quote
An AEO unit(s) within Point Blank range of a PL unit of any type will attempt to perform these orders first

It then goes on to say
Quote
The AEO unit must legally be able to perform the action

My question is regarding the legally bit. Does it require LOS? The manual says the 3 prerequisites for combat are appropriate weapon FP,  LoS and range.

Yes, if it can't see it then it can't shoot at it.  ???
My example was a bit poor - though I know you're answer is the same...

The reason for my confusion was because I had a T80 behind a hill. It was actually the Yellow Order - so for Effective Range - and the first part of the order was FIRE - which it couldn't do because there were no US units in LoS. However the next order was a Move and Fire and had I moved, I would've been able to fire. So I thought I should play that - then I was thinking "But he doesn't know the US are there...."

There are also other examples (that make you think LoS doesn't matter), particularly in the Secondary order group - something like Move Towards Closest PU. This is also the case on the Counter Actions sheet.

I guess I'm asking for confirmation that LoS matters in ALL these orders or whether LoS is only taken into account when being told to fire or move and fire.

Here's an example of a Counter Action
Quote
AEO closest to PU thats Fired - Fire or Move towards
- is LoS required here or just simply as said - closest PU that Fired?

I think it's hard for me sometimes to translate the orders of the Solo Assistant because I'm not sure if LoS is a prerequisite. If LoS is required for all Solo Assistant orders and Counter Actions when a Player Unit is specified, then I'm good and that's all the clarification I need.
Title: Re: LnLP World at War Series reboot
Post by: Barthheart on April 28, 2020, 10:37:02 AM
Ah, got you.

When it says move to closest PU, then choose the closest, even out of LoS.

But you need LoS to fire.

So, Move and Fire, move to get in LoS then fire if you made LoS.

Just as how a human would do it.

Title: Re: LnLP World at War Series reboot
Post by: judgedredd on May 02, 2020, 09:24:46 AM
I had an odd one today.

Scenario 1
The Red Priority order was Assault if AEO FP > PU

The US unit in range was an Infantry unit with ATGM and an M113 on a hill, in woods in Improved Position.

The Russian units (HQ, 2xT80) were 3 hexes away. Ideally, they would've fired. HQ bonus plus Volley fire would've given the Russians T-80 = 3 + Volley = 4 + HQ bonus = 6 dice.

Also - they would be Op-Fired on whilst closing...anyway - the order is the order - after all, there are bad commanders, right?

I closed. Sure enough the US opened up with their ATGM. 1 T-80 disrupted. Missile check is good...so no check for reload. Onwards. Next hex they are attacked by a reduced M1...miss.

Into the pit they go.

The M113 doesn't get to assault (no AP FP). The Infantry do and score 1 hit so the T80 is disrupted. There are no save rolls in assault - as the manual puts it - it's a knife fight. Then the T80 attacks (the assigning of damage doesn't happen until all combat is done between two units). Hit on the infantry...Disrupted.

So - the result was both sides have 1 disrupted unit. As the Soviets didn't score more hits than the US, the Soviets have to retreat to another hex.

However - after all that........was I able to use the ATGM in assault? The reason I thought I may be able to was because the infantry do not have a black triangle (meaning their ATGM does not have a minimum range at which it can be used...however, I didn't because it doesn't have assault values (bottom right of the counters).

Was I right not to use the ATGM?

I'm going to have to watch a few videos on the Solo pack. I'm not really feeling it.

I don't know how different this solo pack is to the LnL Tactical solo pack, but I got on with the latter far more than I'm getting on with the former

Watched a video...didn't help much at all even though it was over 40 minutes. Basically it reiterated what was in the Solo Assistant manual with some additional flim flam.

I've re-read the Solo Assistant example of play and I know what to do - it's just awkward.

The Solo Assistant manual says you pick a unit, then a card (Page 21 - the writer selects the M113 then plays a card) and deal with the order.

Regarding the cards - where you may think you pick a unit, then a card then play one of the options, you'd apparently be mistaken - sometimes.

When you take a card, the Priority orders are for the unit you selected and as long as the parameters are right (LoS, range, correct weapon type). However the confusion occurs (at least for me) when you get to the Secondary orders.

These state things like AEO in 0 DB hex closest to a unit or VO and AEO closest to a unit. So my confusion comes from the fact that you select a unit, go through the priority orders and if none of them are relevant and none of the secondary orders are relevant, you scan your formation for a unit that does fit the bill.

But fit the bill for what? The Priority orders? The Secondary orders? I guess so.

BU that's my confusion...selecting a unit then playing the card, checking the orders against the unit and then checking other units in your formation...but then you'd do that anyway because - the card is used for the whole formation.

It does specify in the Solo Assistant rules (page 14 bottom of section 6.4.2) that if you get to the bottom of the card and the unit cannot perform an action, it does nothing.

I think I may have cleared my confusion by laying it out here...thanks for wasting your time

They done it in Die Hard

But I agree. TEC says no, but manual has several examples whilst talking about unit height and terrain.

I think I'll er on the side of caution and NoE is no go over cities - there. Confusion over.

I was just about to agree but thought I'd check and actually wiki defines NoE as

Nap-of-the-earth (abbreviated NOE) is a type of very low-altitude flight course used by military aircraft to avoid enemy detection and attack in a high-threat environment. During NOE flight, geographical features are used as cover, exploiting valleys and folds in the terrain by flying in, rather than over, them

Point still stands though...Cities could be flown through

Changed the bolding to make my point. Says nothing about trees and cities.
But still, if you choose to fly over a city or woods hex instead of going around you make your helos more vulnerable to AA, so it's still a choice.

A question for Barthheart if I may (or anyone playing the game)

Direct Fire
Do the Point Blank, Long Range  rules apply to everything? Infantry? Helicopters?

It doesn't say in the rules...but I'm guessing they do. It makes sense that infantry can fire longer than their effective range but less effectively. I was pretty good with an SLR at 600m. I was less effective at 1km

Short answer yes.
Long answer, there are some exception based on firing platform and target. Like vehicle HE firing at helos don’t get point blank and can’t use Extended range.

Just going through the rules again, I see in sections 10.6.4 and 10.6.5 that point blank range and long range are not available for CAS and on board indirect fire

Would helicopters be considered CAS?

Last one for today.

Your think I haven't read the rules, but I've read them through one and I've referenced each section as I come to our in the game...but I'm unsure about this

When a unit attacks a hex with 2 units in it, what if the save dice and required rolls are different?

For example a T62 (save dice=3 + required roll=6) with BMP-1 (save dice=1 + required roll=5).

Does the player get to choose what unit to use as the save roll check?

And presumably if the attacking player was using HE, then he'd only be able to stack the BMP and so the defending player wouldn't get to choose which save rolls to use?
Title: Re: LnLP World at War Series reboot
Post by: Barthheart on May 25, 2020, 10:42:37 AM
When you attack a stack you get to choose the target, as long as the weapon type you are suing can attack it.

So in your example you are correct, an HE attack against that stack would only be able to target the BMP.

But is an M-1 was attacking, it could choose either the T-62 or the BMP.
Now, the best choice for the target, in this case would be the BMP because it's easier to kill and any "overflow" hits will automatically be tallied against the T-62.
So, it's not always, read: rarely, a good idea to stack weaker units with stronger ones....

Yeah, in fact the only units that should be stacked are Pact heavy armour as they can then use the "volley fire" tactic. For everybody else it just leads to the second unit taking hits without saves....

This is a superb game. The more I play, the more I want to play.

A couple of things that bug me - really, really minor things

That is all. Like I said - very minor - just little things that nip occasionally when I play. But such a good game and the rules are getting solid now. I'm having to refer less to the manual.

I try to place the Ops Complete markers turned 45 degrees to the stack. That will allow some of the colour strip to show.
Mostly though, I end up just trying to remember where a formation is and moving a few OC markers to check.
I don’t really find it a problem wth the board game.
On VASSAL though I really don’t like the OC markers to be the same size as the counters. There they should be 1/2 size or smaller.

Weird that it bothered more on th digital copy than the physical.....

Maybe because as you say - on the physical copy you turn the counter 45 degrees which allows you to mostly get a handle on the unit underneath when the digital version doesn't allow that.

I've just looked and noticed that there's an option to use a small version of the Ops Complete. You have to edit the module and select nthe properties for the Ops Complete counter.

I didn't see any option for the Out of Command counter.

I don't know how else to get to the graphics resources...I assume they're in the vmod file?

For some board games I use small, semi-clear plastic chips like the picture below to mark units that have move/fired, etc. You can find them dirt cheap in mass quantities. They are clear enough to see the information (and color if you use the right chip) on the counters below them.

If you change the extension from .vmod to .zip you can use any zip file handler to view he contents. All the graphics are in a folder called "images". I'd just go in there and resize all the counters I wanted to be 1/2 sized.

An error that has thrown me on every game.

14.7.2 - Strike Procedure...
In the manual it states
Light & Heavy Armor roll only for defensive Bonuses for terrain type (see 10.6.8) and concealment (see 10.6.13). They do NOT use their Armor/Save value but instead take an additional 1d6 Defensive Bonus, subject to the Maximum Defensive Bonus (see 10.6.14)

However, that threw me because I was unsure what to use as the Save value as it clearly states you don't use the Armor/Save value. I've been rolling on a 6 because the manual states NOT to use the save value! (and errata doesn't correct it)

There is no amendment for this in the Errata...but it is different in the online manual.

• Light & Heavy Armor do NOT
use their Armor value (though
they do use their Save value
) but
roll only for Defensive Bonuses
for terrain type (see 10.6.8) and
concealment (see10.6.13). They
also receive an additional 1d6
Defensive Bonus, all subject to the
Maximum Defensive Bonus (see.
10.6.14)

Do you play with the Solo Assistant?I often find myself (more often than not) using my judgement call...as it says in the manual. For example, following the rules, I had a whole formation sitting going nowhere because the Allies had a helicopter hanging around. Eventually I used my "judgment call" and determined that they wouldn't be sitting around trying to fire at this thing (they were tanks and APCs - not AA units, so their attack value was severely limited) - they'd be heading for cover.

I'll be honest - I'm not feeling the love for the Solo Assistant in this particular game. In LnL Tactical, I found it superb. But like I said - I seem to be employing my judgement more often than not. It kind of makes me resent even wasting the time to pull the card and check. I'd rather just say "Does that unit know those forces are there? No, then move down the road" or "That's a helicopter and it's killing us - lets GTF out of dodge".

Also - I measured my table and I can't even fit the Defence of Frankfurt on my dining room table  :'(

Have you tried the campaign system yet with The Drive on Giesen?

I haven't tried the Solo Assistant yet. Just playing each formation as it comes up. I have overall plans for each side but that is just a narrative in my head. The chit draw systems lets me dod the best possible at that moment for the formation drawn.

I have not tried the Campaign yet. Maybe you and I could do a Forum Play game of it. Keeping some info secret and let the others follow along and kibitz.  :D

And it is such a good game. I'm really looking forward to going back to it - and whilst I love new games,  they get in the way of classics.

That's why I can't understand why I buy alot of games. I have some crackers

Combat!
World at War '85
LnL Tactical - several editions...Vietnam, WWII, Day of Heroes, Falklands
Company of Heroes
Phantom Leader

and yet - it's just not enough. Why do we behave like this? I like those systems I have. I don't really think they're lacking anything or that I'm gaining anything else (apart from a new procedures with new rules and new components) by getting new games. It's not like the new games I get are going to enhance my gaming much more than I already have with my current selection.

Why - why do we do it? Serious question.

I've pretty much got a decent mix of games that I'm very happy with and anything else I'm looking at (for example Front Toward Enemy, The Last Hundred Yards and Old School Tactical) will provide different components, a different sequence of play, different tangible qualities and different mechanics (albeit - sometimes very limited in difference).

In fact furnishing myself with other games simply reduces the quality of the games I already have - and almost very superficially.

oh - and on the back of that post I've just bought Old School Tactical Vol III and Hell Bent!!

I mean - what is wrong with me...these are just new systems to work out and engage with - taking me away from the already familiar!!

IO could forgive myself when I bought LnL Tactical Falklands...and then bought LnL Heroes of the Nam and then Day of Heroes - they are all the same system with small nuances....but buying into a new game mechanic altogether just seems fruitless.

I am ill  :-[

Why - why do we do it? Serious question.

Because we can?

Because it's nice to buy things we couldn't previously?

Because we like to have options?

Because we have an uncontrollable problem akin to heroin addiction and get the itchy-itchies when we go without buying a new game for a week (your mileage may vary) or so?

*we*

 :D
I know I was being totally irrational  :D

I just thought - get used to a system - and enjoy that system - and then buy another game to learn a new system.

I've probably played no more than 2 scenarios of most of the games I have...only Phantom Leader and Combat! stick in my mind as having had more table time. I've been reading the rules for Front Toward Enemy for the last week or so - and now I've got it to the table, I'm already looking forward to learning and playing both The Last Hundred Yards and Old School Tactical.

But on the other hand, I'm really wanting to go back to Combat!, LnL WaW 85, LnL Tactical. Hell Day of Heroes hasn't even had the rules read yet.

I just wish I could say no more and play the very, very good games I already have.

Alas - it seems I'm not that strong.

Because we're all hopeless degenerates.  ;D

Since it's a long weekend, would anyone be interested in a TTS game.  I've not had time to sit down to learn so either we'll be learning together or someone to beat the rules into me :)

Yes,  I have the whole kickstarter set.

No problem. I was a bit rusty, too many game rules stuffed into aging brain.
I've started making scenario setups in TTS. Of course I started with the large scenarios...  :idiot2: Scenario 19 - The Rhine is almost complete. It could easily be a 4 player game, Russian and East German vs US and West German.

Maybe we can con Tuna into playing.

Don't know why, I'm even on different computers (youngest is back at college, so instead of going down cellar to my PC, I've been using his the last few weeks). I think the 'quality' of Steam is much better out of the box. Discord to me seems a little bit tinny in that regard. But many time when we are playing. Jim's voice or sometimes OJs will start being garbled. Sometimes it just loses it completely, i.e.  you guys can't hear me either (this happened with me, OJD and Dalinor in our post game chat the other day). Again, when Steam is working, it's great quality wise, but the intermittent problems suck. I've never had these problems on discord.

This is has been fun so far.  We've made it through turn 4 of 20 and played about 3.5 hours.  That may sound slow, but we had a couple of technical issues that turn about half an hour.  Also, Tuna and I new to the game, so we're still learning and getting the hang of it, though turn 4 went quicker.

I think the one rule that needs to be looked at is the electronic warfare one.  The card has come up four times, 3 against all three Warsaw Pact formations, and once against a NATO formation.  This has really slowed things down since each hex that has an effected unit has to be checked each turn.  It also means that the WP units haven't gotten to within two or three hexes of any objectives yet.  I suggested that once it's used, that the card stays out of the deck for 2 or 3 turns.  SDR suggested that it stays out until the targeted formation is no longer impacted.

Post by: tuna on September 12, 2020, 03:24:42 PM
Should refresh step not happen until the formation card is drawn (activation), as opposed to beginning of the turn?

Post by: Barthheart on September 13, 2020, 09:52:27 AM
Hey Tuna.
What is shown in that video is what happens when you draw a formation card.

At the end of a turn, though, there is a step called Marker Removal Phase. In this phase you remove Ops Complete and Out of Command markers from everyone on the board. This is in section 2.3 of the WaW85 rulebook for those of you that have it.

The Nations at War system will have a similar phase at the end of every turn.

Post by: tuna on September 13, 2020, 11:02:52 AM
So if a unit does an Opp Fire, and then later it's Formation is activated, it removes the token and can do something again in that same turn?

I've heard about this game quite a bit and I never took the time to investigate it. It reminds me of a print version of On Target Simulations' Flashpoint Campaigns. Those counters look great! How large are they? Watching the replay as I type and the Fencer attacks the improved TOW eliminating it. Not good.

Looks like an interesting game. I hope you get back to it soon.  :)
