Title: How Manchester was named.
Post by: besilarius on July 14, 2021, 06:20:26 PM
The city of Manchester in n the UK was originally a Roman fort.  For a long time, it was thought the name was Manucian.  Newer research has shown that to be an error.  The actual name was Mamucian.

It was an obvious site, a hill next to a main road añd overlooking a major river crossing.
Roman surveyors were experienced veteran specialists.  Kind of like sergeant-majors or Master Chief's.
After surveying the area, they would have returned to Agricola and tell him.  He probably agreed and asked, what should we name the fort.
Well, it's a breast shaped hill, Mamucian sounds good.

And now they have Beetham Tower, the high-rise building that 'hums' in high winds.

From what I read, there is an on-going effort by residents to get this glass panel, which is purely 'decorative' removed because of the noise it makes.

Last week, my son travelled by train to do some work in Buxton, exchanging trains at Manchester, and he remarked at how the strange the building looks.

I asked him if it hummed, but he said he couldn't smell anything unusual.

Yes, he has inherited my sense of humour.

I’ve stayed in it but it never hummed

I was working in the ‘walkie talkie’ in London when it set fire to a car in the street below

That is a funny looking building. From a good article, too:

Summary: Florida Man variants found in Manchester.

There's a series on Prime called The Force: Manchester, which is pretty decent.
