Title: Scotland History Tours
Post by: judgedredd on August 06, 2021, 09:57:29 AM
I've just found this guy on YT

Cracking set of videos, nice sense of humour delivering history in an upbeat, entertaining manner. For anyone interested in Scottish history

I tweaked the URL, which our forum is trying to parse as an individual video instead of a link to the channel

try this instead

https://www.youtube.com/c/ScotlandHistoryTours (https://www.youtube.com/c/ScotlandHistoryTours)

No problem.

As soon as the forum software sees "youtube-dot-com" it tries to present it as an embedded video, even if it's not.

You have to manually put the {url} tags around it to force the forum to see it as a link instead of a video.

I've seen a few of them. They're great!

Especially recommended is the video about the Jacobite Rebellion where he argues it wasn't a rebellion, but an attempt to restore the legitimate Stuarts to the throne rather than some random German.

Indeed there was alot of "We lost tae the English" videos and he's not ashamed of pointing out the failures.

One story I particularly liked was when the dastardly English set siege to Berwick. They sat on a hill to the north of the town waiting for the Scots army to show and the guy in Berwick said if the Scots don't relieve Berwick by 11, he'd surrender to the English.

So the Scots sent "knights" upstream, crossed the river Tweed at a ford and came across the bridge from the south into Berwick....Berwick was relieved. Well - except the English didn't think "that was cricket" - so said no - you have to relieve from the north.

Scots knew it was an awful battle to come - attacking uphill in boggy terrain or something like that - and they were mullered. On the wiki page, the English had about 8000 troops to Scotland's 12000. Apparently the Scots casualties were listed as in the thousands and the English casualties were listed as "a few"

There were some others too where the Scots were battered.

One thing they had in spades was tenacity. Pity that was about it.

Yep.

When I was a kid, our school took us there for a week. We spent it walking around the River Tweed - which is stunning by the way. It's got beautiful bridges and wee streets. The whole area is gorgeous.

Newcastle-Berwick-Edinburgh? Although that would be 120 miles, so maybe West Coast in Cumbria?

200 miles from Newcastle to Berwick to Edinburgh over 3 days

And this was Newcastle to Berwick when I did that part of the route in a oner

I am absolutely gutted - and it haunts me to this day - that I didn't pay attention when I got to Berwick and did another .34 miles...but I was just so relieved to get to Berwick - I just wanted a shower and bed! Because I didn't do the extra .34 miles, I now, still can't say I've done 100 miles in a day...and yet I was probably as close as I'll ever get to doing so!
