Hi all,
Is there a current solo or multi-player small unit tactics wargame for modern era conflict that is available that focuses on Light Infantry and/or SOF operations?
Thank you!
-Sean

When you're talking "modern" are you looking for Cold War/post-Vietnam?  Or post-Cold War / GWOT?

Are you looking for tabletop, or digital?

Is there a specific focus you're after?  Mission editor?  Physics engine?  Rehearsal tool or concept exploration?

The challenge you'll run into for a lot of small-unit SOF stuff is that it's almost better handled by an RPG engine given the interpersonal dynamics involved in many SOF missions.

Not trying to be snarky about any of these questions, but that'll help us narrow down the best suggestion for you

Table Top or Online, does not matter.

Looking for a suggestion that deals with small unit tactics, that can give guys reps for tactical decision making.

No worries on the snark! I appreciate the help!

depending on what needs you're trying to fill

DIGITAL
The modern Combat Mission games (Cold War, Black Sea) would work from a digital implementation.  The UI takes a little getting used to, especially for those not used to digital gaming, but it's more tactically proficient than most of your console shooter games

Similarly, the VBS series is the gold standard for one-to-one player/game ratio events, but again, the UI needs tom learning time before you're ready to train on it.  There's DOD-approved VBS3 implementations, too

TABLETOP
Phantom Fury, if you can find it (reprint supposedly coming soon) deals with battles in Falluja

If you're just looking for some maps/counters to talk thru glorified sand table exercises, then older copies of Raid, Firefight, or Cityfight might work for you, but the rules learning curve is a little steep for Cityfight (Firefight/Raid are the same system and not as complex)

For squad-level counters, in a modern setting, there's the Lock 'n Load Tactical rules.  The core games in the series are WW2 ones that compete directly with Squad Leader (which is almost exclusively WW2) but there are LNLT games that also cover the Falklands, Mogadishu, Afghanistan, and Libya, as well as Cold-War-goes-hot in the 80s.

MINIS
There's the Ambush Alley minis rules, which require figures so some people take them less seriously because it just looks like you're playing with toy soldiers.  Ignore the naysayers.  The AA rules are good and they can do a lot at platoon level and below.  More than 25 or so figures/side on the map and it bogs down, so the sweet spot for AA is right there are the multi-squad level
