eesh
my emphasis
So I’m a eurogamer who’d like to try out war games. Another BGG’er and long time wargamer gave me this link and said my question was quite common. My interest is WWII the European theater. Either D-Day or the Battle Of the Bulge interest me greatly. Given these two events, what entry level war game(s) would you recommend? Something that will introduce me to the mechanics that’s not too overwhelming for starters. Thanks in advance.
some good initial recommendations...
The best game I know of that fits your criteria is Battles of the Bulge: Celles. It's a great game, not very hard to understand.
Perhaps The Drive On Metz (second edition)?
I'd recommend Memoir'44
It's the best entry level ww2 wargame out there.
It's easy, fun and has some historical flavor. and you probably can convert other euro gamers with this one.
ah yes... but here comes the cavalry, who ignore the OP, see "entry level war game" in the subject line, and start spouting off....
Ogre is a classic intro level wargame. You only need the basic version, not the crazy deluxe edition.
Also look at the Quartermaster General Series.
Ogre being such a WW2 game and all
The classic SPI Napoleon at Waterloo is a good intro into hex-and-counter wargames and you should be able to find a copy inexpensively if not a print-and-play version.
Yep, just oooooozing "D-Day" there
Other games to look for:
Sekigahara:the unification of Japan (although not WWII, an excellent strategy war game that beginners can grasp quickly)
Up front(if you watch how to videos...the game is not complex and slowly adds rules. The rule book is typical 80s though..a bit badly written)
WTAFMFHFH?!
Many are OOP, but the Gamers/MMP Standard Combat Series is pretty basic.
Ardennes, Day of Days and Bastogne cover your interests in WW II ETO.

GMT’s Normandy ‘44 mentioned above is great, although I would rate it medium complexity (maybe 4-5 out of 10)....not really difficult concepts, just a lot going on.
This dude's on drugs
The reason is that it will introduce you to the biggest genre in wargames: Hex'n counter. Another good choice is A Victory Lost: Crisis in Ukraine 1942-1943, but it is longer (maybe 5-6 hours to play).
Another important genre is card-driven games, and I would suggest Twilight Struggle as an introduction. Then there are block games. I would suggest Sekigahara or Hammer of the Scots. I like Sekigahara better, but HotS is a nice introduction to the kind of block games published by Columbia games.
But if you're going to choose one, choose a hex'n counter game first, and Battles of the Bulge: Celles is an excellent introduction.
Seconds the nomination for Celles then sends the guy to the East Front and brings in a bunch of non-WW2 games

Did you invite the dude to come over here? Cyrano could recommend some good Napoleonic D-Day games.

Suggesting a bunch of OOP games to a new wargamer.... ::)

I see this happen in the Reddit wargaming communities as well, all the time. People have poor reading comprehension...

BGG recommendations threads are always a complete nightmare.
"I like heavily thematic action games. Any good suggestions?"
"How about Terra Mystica."
"Agricola is exactly what you're looking for!"
-
:) "I'm interested in games on the air war in World War I."
:D "Small World would be perfect for you."
>:D "I can't recommend Tsuro enough."
:idiot2: "Formula De, especially with the Singapore Docks expansion FTW."

None of these appear to have muskets in them. :waiting:

"Oh, you like muskets? A Feast For Odin doesn't actually contain any of those, but it sure is awesome!"
-
"Ohhh, you like ENTRY-level Napoleonics. Well why didn't you say so? Try some Struggle Of Nations!"

"There is no point in starting someone into wargaming with anything other than Case Blue."

Some idiotic sack of moldy ass is at it again on BGG
OP asks
Hi i am looking for a modern warfare game, maybe has some features like can make a cyber attack to disable or confuse enemies, or can decode to know more hidden information about enemies, or spend politic actions to weaken the support of opponents...
I mean, there's Cybernaut, Millennium Wars, Next War series, Crisis 2020, and others.
nah, moldy sack of ass decides
World At War 85: Storming the Gap is a really great series that came out last year. It includes a number of things you are after, yet remains very playable. It also has a good solo module as well. It is going to continue to be expanded in the future.
It is an updated version of the older series of games World at War: Eisenbach Gap which were released some years ago (but you might find cheaper).
really, W@W85 has " a number of things you are after"
Hmmm....
make a cyber attack to disable or confuse enemies
decode to know more hidden information about enemies
spend politic actions to weaken the support of opponents
yeah... all that is just ooooozing out of W@W85.
people are fucking morons, man....

Ya gotta post a link....

I remember SPI's monster game 'Next War' has electronic warfare and ECM in it, and that game is pretty old now.
