Title: New York 1776
Post by: bayonetbrant on April 23, 2021, 11:23:31 AM
I wanted to do something different, so I pulled this one off the shelf.  I guess I'd stickered it somewhere along the way.
I was even planning to write an AAR similar to The White Tribe.

Read the rules - nothing too complex.

Set it up - again, nothing too complex, but very jumbled at the start

And...   meh

I just don't really want to push this one around.  I tried.  I really did.  I wanted to do something off the wall (for me at least) and give it a go, and I just can't get into it.

I might be willing to drop this one in the mail to someone if they want it.  I just....   don't.

I wasn't trying to stand them up for any sort of concealment since I was playing solo.

 :nope:

I wasn't mailing it to you anyway!  The blocks would make it an $80 cost to ship ;D

The blocks look nicely clipped.

Ya know, Brant, we could take up a collection to send it to Bob and make him take it.

We would have to get someone to drop by and make sure he has it prominently displayed.

I've looked at this before myself. The game looked good, I just wasn't sure about the map.

I used to be just like you. Then I discovered Command & Colors.

I enjoy games on the AWI and learning about the period but to be honest for whatever reason I do not like the look of this game. I know that may be shallow and what not but there is no visual appeal for me.

I don't have a problem with the map, but those block pieces...

they're supposed to be used for Fog of War.  Since I was playing a solo game, FOW seemed irrelevant, so I laid them down instead of standing them up

Pretty sure their orientation is not the problem.... I don't like blocks either, standing up or laying down.

Eh, blocks are okay. Not ideal, but not bad. Depends on the game.

Given the choice I would prefer not to have blocks. Counters are the way to go. But I don't hate blocks to the point of not playing a game.  8)

I can see your point. I'd add it really depends on what the blocks look like. For example, Skies Above The Reich looks pretty awesome even if on blocks (different but doable). I also just got a copy of Holdfast Pacific after waiting a while because the block designs were a little weird to me. I love the design, don't get me wrong, but having to rotate the block to show its strength pointing up just doesn't look even and right to me from an aesthetic standpoint, not when you have a mix of ships with different damage statuses.
