Looks good. I just got their Celles game, which focuses on the high water mark of the German advance.

I must admit I'm tempted by it. Its a manageable size for one thing, and it has some well-known names behind it. The system, apparently, has its roots in the 'dark Valley' series from GMT.

Still on pre-order, at least here in the UK. anyway, but definitely looks interesting.

So, I just received a copy of this today on long-term loan from my very good buddy, JD (thanks, mate  :bigthumb: )

I spent some time this afternoon and evening going through the rules, setting it up, and pushing a few counters around, and I have to say that so far, its the best attempt I have come across to do a one-map bulge game. I like the scale of the game , the physical appearance of it, and what I've learned of the system thus far is quite positive.

Whilst I knew that it was a Ted Raicer design, it was only when I read the blurb in the rulebook that I learned that its basically the same system as the three 'Dark' games that he designed and are published by GMT. Apparently, he could not use the word 'Dark' in the title as it was being used for that other series.

Anyway, so far, so good. I shall report further after a bit more serious play.

Thanks again, JD  ;)

So would it have been "The Dark Woods" or "The Dark, Deadly Woods"? Or even "The Really, Really Cold But Nonetheless Dark Woods"?

Possibly one or non of those, we shall have to wait and see.

However, he does mention the possibility of other games being published by Revolution and using the same system, but using the word 'Deadly' instead of 'Dark in the title.

Just ignore them Bob and get on enjoying the game.

I'm glad initial impressions are positive.

When I read the rules, there was a lot that reminded me of the Enemy Action:Ardennes game. The main difference that stuck out to me was the chit pull system in The Deadly Woods instead of the card process in EA:Ardennes (which is a superb solo game).

There may be more differences - bad memory and all that.

This is a very neat little game, and so far I think its hands-down the best single-map 'Bulge' game that I have played.

No real rules quibbles (yet) and its pretty straightforward to play. The only minor point I would note is that, owing to the nature of the campaign, there are a number of small 'one-off' rules or situations of a limited duration that you need to remember. An 'idiot sheet' would have been useful and there is space for such on one of the PAC's which, on one side, just has the same illustration as the box cover art.

I have been through the forum there for the game; just the usual mixed bag of stuff really. I should add that this issue is by no means a game-breaker, though.

Yes, there are a couple of useful items there in the 'files' section, including an errata and a rather good illustrated 'example of play' file.

Yeah I recall those nuances when I read the manual. Had I had my wits about me, I could've noted them down as I went.

I did print out a Sequence of Play which I also think was missing from the Player Aids.

Yup - the sequence of play is quite a lot different for turn one.
