I've gone through all my reference books and found not one, although many varied, and quite elaborate, unit marking there are in abundance, right down from Gruppe to Staffle level.

Thanks, gents. I had a feeling it just wasn't a normal thing among Germans as it was among Allied air crew. I'm certain from your feedback and just common sense, there were an exception or two.

The only one I found is an illustration in Profile Publications No.40 for the Me 109E-7 Trop, which shows an aircraft from III/JG 77 in Greece, 1941, which, apart from the unit badge, has a cartoon style pigs head under the cockpit. There is no text attached to this, and no explanation in the book.

Unit artwork was not uncommon in the Luftwaffe, often started by the unit commander and later added to other planes in the squadron. Per wikipedia, some examples would include Adolph Galland's Micky Mouse and Erich Hartmann's Tulip (which was used until recently by A Luftwaffe squadron until they transitioned over to Eurofighters)

I'd forgotten about Adolf Galland's Mickey Mouse insignia. I'd thought that was just his 'signature' icon, sort of like a graffiti tag.

Good read about the hard use of the B-1 fleet

Quote
“In my own opinion after seeing in excess of 20 years of B-1 operations, we’ve accomplished more than the aircraft was really ever intended for, even if it wasn’t used in the originally conceived methods. The B-1 has been maligned, underfunded, and often placed under the charge of those who managed it poorly and didn’t represent it well when it came to sustainment and actual preventative measures for fleet health."

"The aircraft has largely overflown its original estimated service life and as B-1 operations will eventually dwindle into the twilight, many people will never know the amount of effort poured into keeping it flying despite the conditions, which forced it’s handlers to keep moving the goalposts. We were promised better systems through upgrades only to have them fail and no spares available. Procurement and sustainment contracts for critical components often took years only to have those parts not fit or fail sometimes out of the box."
