I'm tempted, but fifteen bucks seems like a lot for them...mainly as I don't hardly have time to play computer games any more.

No, not on a wish list. I searched for The Last Hundred Yards specifically. You are right about the filtering system. You pretty much have to know what you are looking for.

It is very X-Com like combat-wise so if you liked X-Com I think you will like this. My only word of caution is that the campaign is fairly short. They did just release new DLC but I don't have it so I can't comment on what it adds. IMO the base game is worth $21.

You might want to skip this then. It is very much like the reboot in terms of "trigger hexes". I haven't replayed any of the missions so I'm not sure if the enemies always react the exact same way.

The Pacific War war game?

First edition rules were a disaster. If they have the second edition, which is supposed to be a better translation then you might take a chance on this as an updated look at what was Victory in the Pacific

Yeah.  I added a couple of LnL expansions to the cart.  Even with the sale prices and the Kickstarter bonus coupon, it’ll still cost me more than buying from my usual guy in Calgary once shipping costs are factored in.   If I ship it to my PO Box in Washington, it’s about $10 cheaper but the border lines are getting insane right now.  I drove down yesterday to pick up some Cruel Seas minis I’d ordered recently.  2 hour wait at the border...at 1 pm on a Thursday.  No more cross border trips for me until I get my NEXUS pass.  Got my interview with DHS in August.

I wish I had a local store to buy LnLT games from. Right now I'm sitting on the fence and the only thing holding me back is the fact that shipping is almost the price of an entire game. What a bummer!

There's a Magic / Euro game shop in town. I've never seen a single war game in stock nor have I ever seen one being played when I go in for game night. Do you know who they use as a distributor? I'll ask if they have an account with them the next time I go in.

Not sure. I know there was a problem with a distributor under the previous ownership but I don't know if it's ever been sorted out.

I know our local wargame shop here has trouble getting stuff in stock from them and their primary business is wargames

Miniature Market has SHAEF on their daily drop sale.  Price drops by 4%/day until it sells or they pull it.

It's $36.35 right now.  I picked up a copy a few months back and finally had a chance to play it a few weeks ago.  It's core mechanic is a pretty neat concept but it does tend to be very unwieldy with all the seperate decks of cards you have to keep organized and keep track of.

My opponent and I both enjoyed it enough that we want to try it again.

BGG rates this at a 4.3 and most everyone says how terrible the rules are. I take it the rules were not an issue to you guys?
Title: Re: Consolidated Games-on-Sale Thread
Post by: Silent Disapproval Robot on August 20, 2019, 02:59:49 PM
The rules are not bad.  They could be a bit clearer and the extended example is hey used was not the best choice as it illustrated the first turn which uses special rules rather than a typical turn but they are nowhere near as bad as people on BGG make out.  As long as you’re familiar with army structure and conversant with western front  WWII history, you shouldn’t have any problems.

Took a look the other day at reviews and the table space required looks pretty unwieldy with all those cards.  Care to share any thoughts on the game?  Is it a keeper or a play a few times and done?
Title: Re: Consolidated Games-on-Sale Thread
Post by: Silent Disapproval Robot on August 25, 2019, 07:15:32 PM
I've only played it once so I can't really comment on longevity.  Your concerns are valid.  We found that handling all the decks was a bit of a chore and the game does eat up a lot of table space.  It also really should have included a battle board because you're expected to organize and play your cards in specific locations when a battle does occur and without a mat or board of some sort, it can lead to ambiguities.  They have a battle board illustrated in the rulebook so it's a shame that they didn't include one in the game.  Easy enough to make one yourself and print it out though.

My opponent and I both felt it was physically unwieldy but we also felt that the core mechanic of creating your own TOE with hidden units in each corps was a neat idea and we'd like to play it again at least once more to get a better handle on it.

Combat is brutally unforgiving, especially for the attacker and we both lost a tonne of units early on before we realized just how deadly combat is in the game.  (I lost the entire French 1re Armee in a failed landing along the Cote d'Azure in August '44.  The Germans lost the 1st Army and most of the 5th Panzer army attacking the Normandy beaches in July '44.

I can't vouch for it myself, although my understanding is that it's a decent game overall.  It apparently has good writing and a solid story, but is a bit marred by simple mechanics & gameplay.

There are a couple on the list that are very tempting, but even with discount, the shipping still makes it expensive.

Actually, everything in stock is eligible for at least 25% off. For every game on that list that you got on P500, you're eligible for an in stock game at 50% off (+1 total extra game 50% off).

Shipping is a bit of a killer. I ended up ordering SpaceCorp and Cataclysm. They're unfortunately (or fortunately for my bank account) between print runs on a lot of stuff I would have been interested in.

I'm really not sure there is anything I want.  My anniversary coupon will be here in a week or two, but I'm really not sure there anything I want.  Perhaps I'll check out Fields of Glory: Empires.  Not sure though.

I'm likely to finally pick up War in the West. $33 CDN is not bad.

Oh and War in the East is $26.60 CDN on Steam, same 70% off sale.
Always check Steam when Martix is having a sale... Steam seems to have better conversions at least to CDN.

Same.  Although I'll confess I find Ageod's Civil War II and GG's WitP:AE tempting at those price points.

Federations has been delayed until early next year (https://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/index.php?threads/stellaris-dev-diary-161-development-update.1285424/).  I think it's the right decision.

Thanks bawb, I will do that. Maybe those DLC are on sale. I'll check to see if any were downloaded. Funny thing is I've played it a few hours and can't say there's much of a difference other than the world structure/set-up.

Being fair, I tend to play it sandbox mode, with the largest map and a lot of opponents. It gets better as you go on, as they system of unit perks and buffs that you can get seem never ending. Add in hero recruitment and artefacts, plus magic research and you will realise the depth of the game. As I say, it gets better the deeper you go.
Title: Re: Consolidated Games-on-Sale Thread

I think I have 133 hours in Warlock 1 and have put in 5 or so hours on 2 so far. I'm not having too much fun with the 'normal' mode in 2 and have been playing with the Sandbox mode, too. The new monsters are interesting. Found a red dragon but haven't pushed my luck with him yet.  ;D

I actually have over 600 hours on Warlock I. For me, definitely sandbox mode is the way to go, and, as I say, with all the DLC and that workshop mod I mentioned, its becomes a whole new game. The unit progression system is one of the best I've ever seen in any similar game.

Let me know if you want to play it H2H on Steam :-)

Totally agree. Stonemaier Games in general gets absolute fanboy preening over everything they release, and their stuff is generally not all that great. Tapestry is a mess, Viticulture is dull, Scythe isn't good...

TinyWargames, UK based mat maker is apparently running into some sort of issue.  Don't know if they're going out of business or it's just a problem with PayPal.
At any rate, their US distributor is selling off their remaining stock of gaming mats.

I've never seen one of their mats in person but I've heard very positive things.  I just ordered a couple of mats from them.

At $10, that's an instant buy.  XCOM2 was one of the most rewarding game experiences that I've had in recent memory.  Too bad the sale isn't for Xbox, though.

Yep, I'm in on that. Kind of reminds me of XCom : Apocalypse, which had some great ideas but was a pretty lackluster game overall.

Heh, don't feel bad. I have both the Total War Empire Definitive Edition and the Total War Napoleon Definitive Edition. The former I apparently played for 104 minutes, the last time back in 2012; the latter, I've never played. :(

In their time, they were good fun. Now they seem to have aged quite a bit compared to the new offerings. Wish they would put out a new engine gunpowder game.

My hopes are still with AGEOD. With the success of Field of Glory: Empires I'm hoping there will eventually be a gunpowder age version. Of course, that means Fields of Glory also needs to have a gunpowder age version. (http://www.aarcentral.com/emoti/please.gif)

Good to know.  I gave up after 5 hours or so on E:TW (last in the series I played) due to terrible battle AI.

It was bad, but still fun. I remember the first time Mohawk Indians attacked my troops and them marching in lock-step with their tomahawks raised in the air, I laughed my ass-off.   The American Revolution Mod makes it a little better. Shogun 2's Realm Divide on the other hand, kicked my butt back to Kansas! I learned quick, go slower.

...I admit I never have played Shogun 2 as much as I should have.  (I think I was afraid it couldn't hold a candle to the original for some reason.)  :-[

I strongly dispute that Empire was ever "fun".  Still the worst game in the TW franchise by far (aside from Rome 1, but that's my personal opinion).  :vomit:

I don't own Napoleon, but my impression is it was a much better product (and in many ways, a direct response to the deserved criticisms Empire received).

Empire was fun compared to getting my ass handed to me the way Shogun 2 did. That wasn't fun. That was, 'shamefurl'. I liked the Global Economy thing and the Naval Battles were gorgeous in ETW. Plus it had the Marathas, who doesn't love them?  :D What other TW game have you ever been able to play an Indian Faction? And it had the other Indians too. And.... Prussians! The Custom Battles were worth the price by itself. I loved squishing Prussians with my Maratha elephants. Good fun.

Well if Maratha was part of Empire's appeal for you, then I guess I understand.  :)

I confess that when it comes to strategy games, the sub-continent has typically held little appeal for me.  I also felt Maratha was shoe-horned into the game as a blatant attempt to pander to Indian customers, similar to how the American Revolution tutorial/campaign was added to pander to us Yanks (both of which annoyed me greatly).

I also found the game "unplayable" due to how absolutely horrendous the AI was, both on the battlefield and on the campaign map.  To have musket troops constantly charge my lines (instead of, you know, actually fire their weapons at range) or have a faction suddenly backstab me after my being a loyal ally for 50+ years...it just really broke immersion for me.  :(

I did enjoy the naval battles, however; that was one of the main reasons I'd so looked forward to Empire coming out.  And yes, you can't really go wrong with Prussia.  ;)

...I truly hope CA makes a sequel for Empire.  They just need do it properly this time around.

A new XCOM game called Chimera Squad releases in ten days (https://www.pcgamesn.com/xcom-chimera-squad/xcom-3)

Chimera Squad will be an all-new standalone game set five years after XCOM 2, and will be available as a digital-only Steam release on April 24. For its first week of sale you can get it for only $9.99 (£8.50) as part of a big XCOM celebration, but from May 1 it goes up to its usual retail price of $19.99 (£16.99).

Played the first two missions.  It appears to be more of the same (that's a good thing) with a few interesting additions to keep the game a bit more fresh / less predictable.  Breaches seem like a cool way to not know where your squad will end up when you begin an encounter.  Gone is team-based I go / you go replaced with individual impulses.  This alone changes quite a bit of strategy as it is much more difficult to chop down the largest tree before it has a chance to take a swipe at you.

This is also the first in the series that I've played on PC -- mainly because got X1 for free from XBL and I picked up definitive edition of X2 for $10 during an Amazon Xmas sale.  Thankfully, the PC version has great controller support.  The game plays just like a console would when I have my XB360 controller connected.  BUT, I must say the graphics are *WAY* better than X2 was on Xbox.  I'm able to maintain 60FPS in most circumstances on high quality.  Sadly, Steam Stream doesn't seem to support full controller play so I'm stuck playing on my PC monitor rather than my nice TV connected to a decent sound system.  Apparently, if I connect my controller to the PC rendering the game and not the computer that is streaming, full controller support works great as long as you're in range of the source PC.

Overall, I'd say that it's a definite buy at $10 for anyone that likes turn-based tactical combat.

Absolutely, yes.  While Rome II was released in a deplorable state, it's come a long way since then.  I heartily recommend the Rise of the Republic DLC as well, especially if you have any interest in that era.

Great price for the game.  It's a lot of fun and has more depth to it than you might expect.  Z-axis, Newtonian physics with vectored thrusts and inertia, Cylons doing micro-jumps around the map, and the minis are excellent.  (actually, all the components are top notch.)

My Matrix/Slitherine anniversary coupon showed up yesterday, so I allowed myself to go a little nuts (well okay, more so).  :D  Here's what I grabbed:

Astra Exodus
Battlestar Galactica Deadlock: Ghost Fleet Offensive
Field of Glory: Empires - Persia
Shadow Empire
Warhammer 40,000: Gladius - Tau

It's easily the most games I've made in a single purchase in years, but the opportunity to get them all for half-off (especially when they're all newer/more recent titles) was too good to pass up!  Looking forward to giving them all a spin, but Shadow Empire definitely tops the list.

But their normal bundles are sometimes pretty decent. I signed up for their mail list so I get notified every time they create a new one. Well worth checking out.

Agreed.

What was their name before? I know I bought from them before they changed names. I was still able to access my games after they changed.
Steam also has it on sale, but not as cheap.

Argh, that sucks!  I'm feeling great frustration on your behalf right now.

As Bawb said, I would just return it and grab it again during the holiday sale.  You shouldn't have to wait more than a few weeks.

I'm definitely good for now.

The only game on my wishlist that's on a steep enough sale to even remotely tempt me is Three Kingdoms: Total War, plus a couple of its DLC's.  However, I'm still not going to purchase it until either:  1.) it's *much* cheaper than that, and/or 2.) I finally replace my POS machine with one that can actually run the game decently well.

Ideally I'd love to see a bundle package for 3k as well, although I'm obviously not going to hold my breath waiting for it.  I'd just be happy with an actual decent sale price.

Matrix holiday sale has kicked off.

Honestly, I already picked up all the M/S titles I wanted with my anniversary coupon back at the end of summer.  Until Distant Worlds 2 comes out, I don't think there's really anything in their library to tempt me.

No, I think it has been free since day one. I was playing it long before I got my first DLC. Limitation is or was, that you could only play the first scenario from each campaign. A lot of new campaigns been added, so not sure if it is true with all the new ones. I enjoy it, it's good beer and pretzel fun and supply makes it a challenge to manage (so moves it up from Panzer General in my opinion). Also it runs okay on my laptop, another plus  :bigthumb:

I had to jump in at $6 because that gets me the Acela and the New Haven - New York route. I like these kinds of sims (train/farm/snowcat,etc) more for the scenery and traveling through it than for the vehicles themselves and since New Haven is practically next door it will be fun to look for familiar landmarks.

Now if they only had a New Haven to Providence route, or one to Hartford...

Me too.

I've only been to Boston twice in my life. The first time was part of a multiple-day bar hop with friends that included some underground clubs and the Bull&Finch, and the second was an amazing weekend getaway spent with a nurse I was dating at the time who had spent her college years there at Simmons. In the end we didn't do much sightseeing...

I was notified of this in an email.  Quite ironic, as I've had CK2 in my library for years now.

Even if that wasn't the case, however, this would still be a hard pass from me.  I will never be interested in "games as a service".

I'm wondering if this will become a trend. Civilization's 'New Frontier Pass' is a step in that direction. How big a leap is it to go from saying, "Give us $40 for a year's worth of updates & DLC" to "Pay us $5 a month for a Civilization subscription for updates & DLC".

The key difference will be whether it's like a magazine subscription, or a software subscription (a true SaaS model).

Am I paying $5/mo for access to all of your content, or am I paying $5/mo for you to send me my own copies of the content as it becomes available?

What happens to the app/DLCs once I stop paying the $5/mo?

That will be the real determining factor
Title: Re: Consolidated Games-on-Sale Thread

In a sense, games as a service is quite old (think Ultima Online or Everquest).  Looking at Microsoft's Ultimate Game Pass (I just converted my XBL subscription to Ultimate), there's quite a bit of value there.  For a service like that, I'm interested in good single-player experiences where I intend to play once and never again.  In that scenario, if I'm able to beat one game a month, it's cheaper to play new games through Game Pass than it would be to buy each game individually.  Even one game every other month is still better (~$30 vs ~$50+ to buy).

Yeah, I noticed they have a "4x & Grand Strategy" bundle (https://store.steampowered.com/bundle/20103/Grand_Strategy__4X/) for six games (you get an additional 10% off if you purchase all of them):

Distant Worlds: Universe -     $6.99 (-90%)
Warhammer 40k: Gladius -    $9.59 (-76%)
Aggressors: Ancient Rome - $5.99 (-80%)
Astra Exodus -                         $11.99 (-60%)
Field of Glory: Empires -        $23.99 (-40%)
Shadow Empire -                    $25.99 (-35%)

DWU and Gladius are easily the two biggest steals on that list, although the discounts for FoG:E and Shadow Empire definitely shouldn't be sneered at, either.

If you wanna give it a whirl, we can run a VASSAL PBem.

How well does it work in VASSAL? Is there much player interaction or is it strictly IGO-UGO? Are the rules available?

I'm currently in a PBeM game with a bunch of randos.  Its going well but slooow.  3 of us are good at getting our turns in quickly but there's always one.  Sometimes takes him 3-4 days....

It's IGO-UGO but in phases.  Each turn is a year.  First, in reverse initiative order, each player builds and pays for launch vehicles, crewed vehicles, robotic explorers, and raw materials they want to ship to space.

Second, in reverse initiative order (although high initiative players  an jump the queue), each player launches payloads and moves vehicles already in space (and rolls for catastrophic failures for vehicles that use their engines.  Vehicles relying on inertia just kind of glide along).

Third, in initiative order, players explore celestial bodies and, if successful, possibly discover anomalies and search for life.  They also check for malfunctions and crew endurance.

Fourth, build and/or expand bases.

Later in the game, there is also trading, mining, and combat but it takes a while to reach that stage.

At the start of each new decade, players develop (and steal) new technologies, get funding for the next decade, enact new political policies, and spend political capital on diplomacy and bidding for initiative.

That's basically it.

I think the rules are available from Compass Games's web page.  There are also a lot of good 2-3 page summaries on BGG as well as in the VASSAL module.

Thanks for the heads up re: TSS ojsdad.  I'm glad someone was finally able to release a workshop mod for it.  A guy on BGG made one quite a while back but couldn't get permission to release it from Compass Games.   I just had a quick look and it seems alright.  None of the functionality that the guy's mod on BGG had but from what I gather from the guy who made the VASSAL module, Compass asked for certain features to be stripped.  I guess to ensure that you had to have a physical copy of the game and the rules in order to play.  I'm good with that.

From Avalanche Press email this morning;   ;D

Quote
This week, the guy who made $86 billion during the pandemic, who’s now worth over $200 billion even after ejecting his starter wife for $60 billion, this week that guy who looks just like a Bond supervillain will ask you to give him still more money before he rockets off into outer space.

Now you could go along with that, and most of you probably will. Or you can Fight Prime Evil.

True, though anything off 59.99 for RDR2 would be nice. I might try the Epic Games Store again and see if that'll work, but I'm going to wait for this just in case. Even 10% off would be good.

Pretty happy with my haul here but I might need to play one to completion and THEN install the next - lol what a concept. The HD on this new PC is only a terabyte, and RDR2 alone is 118GB.  :o

Anyway, I grabbed

All in all, not bad I think. I'm installing RDR2 now as I know it'll take forever  ;D

That all said, their servers were surprisingly responsive during the purchase process, so maybe they've finally learned their lessons? Only a bit of lag sometimes when clicking on games to see their store pages, but otherwise no issues.

Fanatical has a bundle that may be worth a look at, if you've been wanting to grab Battlestar Galactica: Deadlock.

BG:D isn't all that expensive (I think it's 13.99 on Steam right now, on sale), but you can get this game plus a few others for 3.99.

https://www.fanatical.com/en/bundle/killer-bundle-17?utm_source=Fanatical%20Newsletter&utm_campaign=Summer%20Scorcher%20%20-%20Day%206%20-%20Killer%2017%20Ending&utm_medium=email

Granted some of those other games look like crap, but if you've not pulled the trigger on BG:D yet, this might be worth it for 3.99.

The potential shutdown of an online service is a risk all of the different digital media platforms selling and storing content share. I think Matrix/Slitherine is an example of a publisher who actually handles this well. They offer cross-service key usage (company site and Steam) where the game can be registered and downloaded on multiple service providers if initially purchased through the company websites.  You also have the options to download and store the files on a backup drive or purchase a physical copy. I cannot think of many other game publishers who offer such robustness.

Yes, it's definitely worth picking up, especially if you enjoy turn-based combat.  Stars in Shadow isn't a terribly deep game, but it's fun, easy to learn, has decent AI, and it doesn't take very long to complete a game.

For advice, don't play as Humans your first time through; they actually have the most difficult start & play-style in the entire game.  Play as the Ashdar Colonials instead, as they're more your "standard" empire; playing as them is a good way to get a feel for the game.

Get Ready for the GMT P500 Summer Sale!!!!
Hi everyone!

I told you all last year (when due to COVID-related working conditions at our office and warehouse it just wasn't possible to have our yearly sale) that we would have a sale for our P500 supporters as soon as possible once our working conditions improved. Well, we are now ready to support a sale, beginning on August 4! I wanted to let you all know several days in advance so you have time to plan your purchases. Here are the details of the sale:

SALE FOR P500 CUSTOMERS!! This sale has traditionally been to thank all the customers who use our P500 system. And this year, the sale is ONLY for P500 supporters from 2020 and 2021—the ones who help us have plenty of cash flow to keep printing our games while also letting us know which games they want the most. We greatly appreciate your support, and this sale is our way of saying, "Thanks!" So, if you've ordered P500 items from us in 2020 or 2021, you will get 50% off in-stock GMT games and accessories (but NOT third-party vendors unless specifically noted).

Euro Friendly Shipping! In a piece of outstanding news, our friends at both Second Chance Games and UGG have agreed to handle our UK and EU orders in the same manner they do for our P500 orders! That means that those of you in Europe WILL be able to get your sales items shipped out at a lower price that includes shipping, VAT, and fees. Just be sure to choose the "Euro-friendly" shipping option when you place your order (this is crucial—if you don't choose the Euro-friendly method, the games will ship out individually to orderers at regular (higher) shipping prices, and you'll have to pay VAT and possibly fees).

I want to say a special thanks to our friends at Second Chance Games and UGG for making it possible for us to provide these savings to our European customers!

Sale Details
Sale Duration: 5 am (Pacific Time) August 4th to 8 pm (Pacific Time) August 11th, 2021

Sale Discount: 50% off all IN-STOCK GMT games (not UGG, Vae Victis, Ludifolie, or Hexasim) or accessories

Sale Eligibility: Any customer to whom we shipped P500 items from January 1, 2020 through July 31, 2021. It doesn't matter when you ordered the items—only that you used P500 to order them and that they were shipped between January 1, 2020 and July 31, 2021.

Sale Quantity Limit: Everyone who used (orders or deliveries, even if the game you ordered hasn't been shipped yet) the P500 program in 2020 or 2021 can get ONE in-stock (not current uncharged/unshipped P500) game or accessory for 50% off the listed price on our website. Additionally, for each game that was delivered to you via our P500 program in 2020 or 2021, you can order one in-stock item at 50% off.
Example: So if you received only one game via P500 between January 1, 2020 and July 31, 2021, you are eligible to order TWO in-stock items at 50% off in this sale. If you received 9 P500 games in that Jan 1, 2020 to July 31, 2021 window, you would be eligible to order 10 items in this sale.

To help you know which P500 games make you eligible for the sale, here's a list of P500 games we shipped between January 1, 2020 and July 31, 2021:

If you are unsure which of these items were shipped to you in 2020/2021, you can check your account on our website by logging in and then clicking "My Account" (at top right on any page of our website). Once you're into your account, click the "Order History" tab on the left side of the page, and that will show you all of your recent orders/shipments.

While They Last: These sale prices last for each offered game until it is sold out or until the sale ends on August 11th, 2021 at 8 pm Pacific time. We expect numerous games to sell out during the sale. When you try to add a game to your cart and get a message that the order exceeds quantity remaining in stock, it's sold out. Please choose other games. We'll do our best to update these with sold out notifications on their thumbnails and by moving them out of the in-stock category as quickly as possible during the sale to avoid confusion.

How to Get the Sale Price: Go to our website and prepare your order from eligible games (see below, in "Items you can buy at the 50% off Sale Price). Then, when you checkout, use the following code to get 50% off per item: GMTSale2021

NOTE: Please DO NOT combine Sale items on the same order as a P500 order. This makes it much more difficult for our office and warehouse folks to process.

Items you can buy at the 50% off Sale Price:
1. Any In-Stock GMT Game, plus. (not UGG, Vae Victis, Ludifolie or Hexasim)
2. You can also purchase Accessories as one of your "items"—Mounted Maps, Card Decks, or Miscellaneous Parts—if you run out of games you want to get at a discount. Note: We've done quite a few really nice Mounted Maps for a variety of games over the past few years. All of these that are still in stock are eligible for the sale. Here's your chance to get some nice mounted maps at half price!
3. All Items on our Specials Page (there are even a few here that are non-GMT games that ARE eligible for the sale)!! Please remember that you absolutely CAN use the games on the Specials Page as part of these 50% off orders if you wish. These items are AMAZING values because you get to use your 50% off the already great "On Sale For" prices on this page! So check out the Specials Page and get some great deals!

Please Remember:
•   The sale begins on August 4th at 5 am Pacific time and runs through 8 pm on August 11th.
•   Use discount code GMTSale2021 when you checkout with your sale orders in order to get the 50% discount.
•   Please DO NOT combine Sale and P500 items on one order. THANKS!

Enjoy the games!

Gene

I just saw Doctor Quest's post.  :)

I've always heard good things about Bridge Commander, so I'll probably pick up that one.  And since I never got around to purchasing either Armada game back in the day (for no good reasons I can enumerate), I'll be sure to grab those as well once they become available.

Now if they could just get Birth of the Federation and Klingon Academy...  :dreamer:

Yeah, I'm glad I can finally get a copy of Bridge Commander. Also, I'm not a Voyager fan but I can say that Star Trek: Voyager - Elite Force was another good game.
Klingon Academy is another one I'd love to try.
Title: Re: Consolidated Games-on-Sale Thread
Post by: Martok on September 09, 2021, 01:25:21 AM
I know Elite Force is widely praised, but I have to pass on that one due to FPS games (especially older ones) always making me ill.

Klingon Academy could be frustrating because of bugs, but the combat was fun (if a bit clunky) and I loved the storyline.  Having David Werner and Christopher Plummer reprise their roles as Gorkon and Chang -- along with Michael Dorn and George Takei doing some work in the recording booth as well -- definitely didn't hurt.  :D

The only reason I don't have the original game still installed is because I couldn't get it to run on a newer machine/OS.  :'(  Being able to play it again would be a dream come true.

They probably could, and I'm sure it will, but I got it at full price at 59.99 and spent 108.9 hours on the trilogy. That's about 55 cents an hour for some good entertainment. At 34-something on sale, that's even better.  :)

I would heartily recommend Celles as it is a smaller slice of the Bulge campaign, with low counter density and some fun mechanics.

Deadly Woods incorporates some of these mechanics, and while larger scale, it's not at all overwhelming, and has a relatively small footprint.

Revolution Games posted they are having a sale starting tomorrow

Out of all those, Pacific Fury, Poland Defiant, Last Battle: Ie Shima 1945, and The Siege of Orgun all look good to me...and are very cheap.

This is an issue as I've been eyeing a couple of Hollandspiele titles lately...lol.

What are your feelings on one bulge game maps?
Title: Re: Consolidated Games-on-Sale Thread
Post by: bob48 on October 03, 2021, 12:47:05 PM
I think its the scale. I guess that most bulge games I've played over the years have been 2 to 4 maps, such as WaR, Ardennes '44, Bitter Woods and a bit of 'Last Blitzkrieg', so unit size tends to be company/battalion/regimental scale and I think that works well for this particular battle. My feeling is that the unit and ground scale I tend to associate with single map games (divisional) is insufficiently detailed.

Obviously, this means that more room is required and usually a greater degree of complexity and thus time investment.

I would welcome a single map game on the subject that doesn't feel too 'crowded'.

Take a look at either Celles or The Deadly Woods.

I'd been looking at Time for Trumpets but that's just too much - battalion level, four huge maps. I much prefer a more manageable outing.  ;)

Not sure if anyone else knows (I wasn't aware until about a month ago), but Amazon Prime has a Gaming section. I get an email notification every so often, telling me about freebies I can get because I'm a Prime member.

So far there's not been a lot, but about a month ago I picked up Star Wars Squadrons, and yesterday, got Dragon Age Inquisition as well as Control. All for free. Well, not free, since you gotta pay for Prime, but it doesn't cost extra.

There's also add-ons and in-game stuff you can claim, if you play other types of games.

Your mileage may vary - I don't see these displaying for me, now, but they may for others. Or, try searching for Control or Dragon Age Inquisition and see what comes up.

Just purchased WarPlan Pacific from Matrix for $19.99   WPP got overall decent reviews and it's not like there a ton of Pacific Theatre games out there.  I have my eye on Decisive Campaigns: Ardennes but it's not on sale and I have plenty on my gaming plate, so I'll wait on that one.  Still, the reviews on DCA are good enough to be tempting. Slowly backing away from the credit card without making eye contact.....

Just got an email that Steam has some classic Sid Meier 80's wargames, originally published by Microprose, now under the Atari banner for around $7 US each:

https://store.steampowered.com/bundle/23974/Sid_Meiers_Command_Series_Collection/

They're a bit hard on the eye by contemporary standards but should still be interesting to play.

Quote
Atari Re-releases Sid Meier's Command Series for PC

Three classic tactical war games are now available on Steam
Atari today announced the return of legendary game designer Sid Meier’s Command Series of classic 1980’s strategy games and are now available on Steam.

Decision in the Desert
El Alamein, October 1944.  You hear the rumble of three hundred enemy tanks advancing against your position in the North African desert. Deploy your tanks, artillery, air cover and ground troops in this historically accurate simulation.

Crusade in Europe
Normandy, June 1944.  An invasion force of more than 150,000 British, Canadian and American forces hits the beach, and then their actions on the ground need to be coordinated in response to real-time events on the battlefield. The beginning of a true military crusade.

Conflict in Vietnam
Ia Drang, November 1965. The deafening whip of chopper blades indicates that the first large-scale helicopter assault ever attempted is underway. The battle begins with touchdown at LZ X-Ray. It ends five days later and no one is sure who has won, or what lessons were learned.

The three part series of tactical wargames was originally released in the 1980s under the MicroProse label. The approach to the Command Series grew from observation of actual tabletop U.S. military scenario exercises, and Sid Meier collaborated with historian Ed Bever to ensure the games’ historical accuracy.

The games challenge players to manage assets, strategically place and move them around the battlefield map, and outmaneuver the enemy. Victory requires careful strategic thinking and fast responses to rapidly changing battlefield conditions.

GOG has a bunch of stuff going on right now...

-  Their big winter sale (https://www.gog.com/games?price=discounted&sort=popularity&page=1) just launched today.  (Eek!)

-  There's currently a flash deal (https://www.gog.com/game/baldurs_gate_2_enhanced_edition) for Baldur's Gate II: Enhanced Edition - only $2.99(USD).

-  They're currently giving away Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun for free (https://www.gog.com/game/shadow_tactics_blades_of_the_shogun) (for the next 34 hours as of the time I'm posting this).

-  The sale includes all of their Star Trek titles (https://www.gog.com/partner/startrek) -- with two notable exceptions...

-  ...Those two games being Star Trek: Armada (https://www.gog.com/game/star_trek_armada) and Star Trek: Armada II (https://www.gog.com/game/star_trek_armada_ii).  They're now available for sale on a digital download platform for the first time ever, if I'm not mistaken.

And...the Steam Winter Sale has begun!  :D

Here's my damage (thus far, but hopefully stopping here):

Airships: Conquer the Skies

I refunded this one. It looked good but I didn't realise just how much time you need to spend designing ships, and that is absolutely not up my street. Looked like a really good game besides that though, I'd definitely recommend it to anyone without my hangup.

Generation Zero

Post-apoc open world survival set in an alternate 80s Sweden. Lots of robots. Robots gone crazy. I haven't played much yet but it had a promising beginning. Quite atmospheric. Tough, though; the robots have laser-like accuracy and can spot you a mile away. I gather the best way forward until you acquire a fearsome arsenal is to stealth it. Has drop-in co-op too.

Ender Lilies: Quietus of the Knights

This is a 2D Soulslike. Not my kind of thing usually, but I was attracted by the remarkable visual style (and the soundtrack is even better). It's pretty charming so far. Combat is tough but fair; if you can't be arsed to learn you'll have a bad time, but if you adapt to each enemy and acquired skill the difficulty seems just right. It's also one of the more forgiving games in this vein - you don't lose accumulated XP when you die, unlike the Dark Souls games. I'm looking forward to playing more of this.

Spellcaster University

Magic school management sim with a touch of roguelite to it. Not sure what to make of this yet. All the ingredients seem to be there and it's a relatively unique take on the genre, but I don't feel like I'm getting the visual feedback that I need. I'll have to investigate further.

Horizon: Zero Dawn

This is the big one. I played through a lot of this game on the PS4 but for various reasons I don't really play on consoles any more, so I've bought it again for PC. HZD is a stunning game with a beautiful world, interesting and likeable protagonist, a story you actually care about, and one of the best interfaces I've ever used in a game of this type. Hoping to complete it this time around.

The fact that it's a Steam-only sale helps.  When it comes to Matrix/Slitherine, I prefer to purchase from them direct.

Not a sale, but Matrix/Slitherine appear to have permanently dropped the price of Distant Worlds: Universe to $29.99 (USD) on all platforms.

Granted, they obviously only lowered the price because Distant Worlds 2 is about to release; and given that, $29.99 is probably a bit too steep, actually.  Still remarkable, though, given their usual pricing policies.

^  Yeah, that's always very frustrating.

As for myself, I did, in fact, end up purchasing Legion Gold and Crown of Glory: Emperor's Edition during the sale.  (Surprisingly, Legion has a Steam version, which I activated.)  Now I just gotta figure out how to play CoG:EE...  :P

Post by: Bison on March 25, 2022, 07:57:48 PM
^ Both good games Martok. CoG is a beast of a game to learn. I really wish they would develop updated versions of Chariots of War and Spartan. I enjoyed both of the games but I am not sure I could go back and play again.
Title: Re: Consolidated Games-on-Sale Thread
Post by: Martok on March 25, 2022, 11:12:02 PM
Thanks, Bison

Yeah, I pretty much assumed CoG:EE wasn't going to be a walk in the park, but that's okay.  I wanted a proper Napoleonic game, and that's always the one that gets recommended.  I'm confident I'll figure it out, at least eventually.

As for Legion Gold, I remember playing a demo at one point and kind of liking it, even if I didn't really know what I was doing.  And for just $1.00, I decided "Why not?"  ;)

It can get a bit repetitive and the game ramps up difficulty by throwing near impossible odds at you in the latter stages but it's still a pretty fun 3D capital ship combat game.  Well worth free.

Yes, especially at the price of free.  It's a pretty fun turn-based fleet combat simulator, and anyone who's a fan of the 2004 BSG series should especially enjoy it.  :cowboy:

In celebration of Warhammer: Skulls week, Gladius - Relics of War is currently free to keep on Steam this week.  If you've been curious about trying out this game, you can't really beat free!  (Most of the game's DLC is currently on sale as well.)

So the Steam summer sale is upon us.  Oy!

Thus far, I've picked up Knights of Honor II: Sovereign and Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord...and I honestly think that's gonna be it for me this time around.  Most of the games on my wishlist either aren't out yet, or the sales discount (if there is one) isn't big enough for me to reach for my wallet again.

EDIT:  Forgot I also gifted Fallen Enchantress: Ultimate Edition (Fallen Enchantress: Legendary Heroes + all the DLC) to a friend.  I see this is now the 4th time I have gifted that game to someone.  :hehe:

There are 2 small budget indy game that I'm looking at : Bomber Command and Destiny of the World. Both under $20 CAD and look like fun and maybe deeper than they appear.

Well, to me it’s very unfinished. Very short introduction to play by 22 bullet points. And then still buttons and concepts not explained so yer left in the dark about how to do, or not do, things. Fighter support flying way ahead of bomber stream instead of with it. Bomb sight control not explained well or not working well or both.

I’ll keep an eye on it but there’s a long way to go.

it's not "games on sale" but rather "cool shit on sale"

Kraken Dice just relaunched their shop site w/ Shopify, so you can save 30% off everything there w/ "SHOPIFY" as a coupon code, at least through the weekend

PLUS they finally got their large messenger bags back in stock (I've been waiting since the summer b/c that was going to be my b-day present to myself), so I got that plus a patch to velcro to it, plus shipping, all for less than the usual price of the bag itself.

And then their site promptly went down  :2funny: It's currently "down for maintenance."
